Surprise Home for Hurricane Victims
By Operation Blessing International
BRAITHWAITE, La. – When Danny and Gina returned to this hard-hit community after Hurricane Isaac, their house was not where they left it. The storm had literally washed it off its foundation and deposited it a quarter-mile up the road, in the middle of the highway. To this day, cars have to drive around the house. All their possessions were ruined.
So disaster relief staff and volunteers from CBN’s Operation Blessing International built the couple a new, fully-furnished temporary home and handed over the keys in a surprise unveiling on Saturday.
“The Hunters are truly remarkable people,” said Jody Herrington-Gettys, OBI’s director of U.S. disaster relief. “When the storm hit, Danny was on sick leave from his job due to a back and knee injury. Even in the midst of pain, when Isaac hit, he helped to rescue 18 people by boat. His wife, Gina, came to volunteer with us within 48 hours of the storm. At first we thought she was a regular volunteer, but later we learned she had lost absolutely everything she owned—but was volunteering to help others anyway. We’re honored to build this home for this incredible and inspiring couple.”
OBI teams totally renovated an outbuilding on the Hunter’s property that survived the flooding. Dozens of volunteers from the charity have spent the past week converting the building into a temporary home, complete with outside trim, paint, shingles, a full kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom, furniture, running water and electricity. The couple will live in the temporary home until a new house is built, for which they had insurance.
