Fleeing Sudan: Refugees struggle to survive

KENYA – For two weeks, Fathia and her three children journeyed on foot through the African desert—desperate to flee war-torn South Sudan and find safety in neighboring Kenya.

Fathia's ankles were severely swollen and her children emaciated when they arrived to the refugee camp. "We went without food for many days, but I was determined to get away. We hardly spent a night without hearing the bombings," Fathia said.

Now Fathia and countless other women and children in the camp find themselves struggling to survive a different battle. Hunger.

"We survived with Kasal food which is made of sorghum," said Halima, another refugee. "I had dried it and every time my children were hungry, we would take a piece of Kasal, put it in water, then eat and drink the sour water."

With the help of a local church, Operation Blessing teams arrived just outside the camp to distribute maize to reach nearly 4,000 refugee families.

"Life has been difficult, but when I see food, I know that people care. I thank God for the people donating food to us," Halima said.
