MOORE, Okla. – The day started with a moment of silence.

A sea of more than 300 orange-shirted Home Depot associates from Dallas, Fort Worth, Tulsa and Moore had gathered in the parking lot outside a Home Depot store in Oklahoma to pause and reflect on the lives lost, the families affected and why they had chosen to come and volunteer.

Then it was time to work.

The Home Depot clean up volunteers clearing rubble.

The “Team Depot” volunteers joined Operation Blessing to help with debris removal, gutting homes, installing tarps on damaged roofs and helping residents recover personal belongings that were lost in the tornado.

“For many residents, this is the most difficult time of their lives and it is so rewarding for the volunteers to help them through it,” said Jody Gettys, director of U.S. Disaster Relief for Operation Blessing. “Even something as simple as helping find personal items, such as wedding rings or photos, means so much to families who have lost everything.”

That sentiment rang especially true for one elderly homeowner who literally did lose everything when his personal safe containing his life savings went missing.

Miraculously, the safe and its contents were recovered by volunteers and returned to the owner.

According to Gettys, he had been searching for it amidst the massive debris since the storm and was beyond elated when the volunteers returned it to him.

In all, a combined 500 volunteers from The Home Depot and Operation Blessing spent the day assisting residents and providing support and comfort to a hurting community.

“Operation Blessing has had the honor to partner with The Home Depot in several disaster relief projects across the United States,” Gettys added. “This partnership makes recovery efforts more resourceful and proficient. Many thanks go out to The Home Depot for its faithful support of Operation Blessing.”
