Snowed In and Shoveled Out!

NORFOLK, Va. – Operation Blessing’s U.S. Disaster Relief Team partnered with the City of Norfolk to respond to local calls for help after a winter storm struck the Hampton Roads area, leaving many residents snowed in and unable to make it to work, grocery stores or even important doctor’s appointments.

As part of Operation: Snow Buddy, OBI staff and volunteers deployed armed with snow shovels to clear snow and ice from the driveways of elderly citizens, single moms and other at-risk residents, like those who are disabled or suffering illness.

“It was very encouraging and rewarding as we went out to help the residents and get to know them on a personal level,” said Jody Gettys, OBI vice president of U.S. disaster relief and programs. “Each resident we were able to assist truly needed our help.” Residents like Bettie.

At the age of 83, Bettie still lives alone in her Norfolk house. She has a severe lung condition and other medical problems that make it necessary for her to have easy access to her doctor. She was overwhelmed by the thought that she could not leave her home to get food or go to the doctor’s if she had an emergency.

When Operation Blessing volunteers arrived, Bettie was relieved and overwhelmed with appreciation. “I had the opportunity to talk with her personally,” Gettys said, “and tears came in her eyes as she shared how grateful she was we were here to help her, and she could not believe we arrived so quickly as she had called in only a few hours earlier.”
