Lesly lives on the edge of the Amazon River in Peru. She’s a single mom who has to make do with the leaky house that she lives in—a house whose roof leaks when it rains.
“I didn’t have money to buy leaves for a thatched roof; it was cheaper to buy plastic, and so that’s what I put on the roof,” Lesly explains.
But the plastic always leaks during the rainy season, and that makes for long miserable nights.
“My children couldn’t sleep because of the leaks. The water would come in and soak everything,” she says. “I would sing to my kids so they could laugh. They laughed and forgot about the falling rain. I laughed on the outside, and inside I was suffering. I didn’t want my children to see me cry. I had to be strong.”
But things were about to get worse—much worse. When the river floods every year during the rainy season, Lesly’s house literally floods to the point of being under water. In fact, one morning during the floods, Lesly had to go out and rescue her 5-year-old daughter.
“I realized that if I had not gone outside at that moment, my daughter would have died—my baby girl,” remembers Lesly. “I asked my aunt for a place to stay, even if it was just a room where we could stay until the flooding passed.”
When CBN’s Operation Blessing arrived on the scene to provide disaster relief from the flood, they found Lesly’s home completely submerged. That’s when the team decided it was time to tear the house down and build her a new one. In just one day, they built the new house on stilts—with a roof that doesn’t leak anymore!
“Someone from Operation Blessing found me and said, ‘Lesly, your house is ready.’ I was so shocked! When I told the kids that we had a new house, they said, ‘Mommy, we want to see our new home!’”
Lesly’s new home is now safe from the floods, year round.
She and her children are extremely grateful. “I am grateful because I have a home and my children will not get wet. And I thank you.”
A few months later, during dry season, Operation Blessing went back and set up a small provision stand for Lesly to sell essentials and snacks to her neighbors. Now she has a way to provide for her young family without leaving her home.
“Thank you for the new business and my new home,” says Lesly. “Thank you Operation Blessing!”
