Eleven-year-old Wu Ping was born and raised in a small village in southern China. She has never been outside the one square mile where she lives and goes to school.

“I have always wanted to go to Beijing someday,” she says. “I have seen it on TV.”

But it didn’t look like that would ever happen. Ping was born with an Icular Septal Defect – a serious heart condition which causes very high fevers.

“The doctor told me that I should accept the fact that Ping was going to die while she was still young,” says Ping’s mother. “I worried day and night. I did not want to lose my daughter.”

In desperation, the Wu’s turned to idols for help.

“I offered incense to the Buddha. That was supposed to bring health and safety and good luck to my daughter,” says Ping’s mother.

But Ping’s condition only got worse. A doctor had once told the family that open heart surgery could repair the condition, but the Wu’s are poor farmers. Even when they sold nearly all of their farm animals, they barely had enough to pay for past medical bills. So, Mr. Wu took a second job and they started saving again.

“I was hoping that my daughter would make it until we saved enough,” says Ping’s mother.

Then, a few months ago CBN came to the Wu’s town with a free medical clinic. The CBN staff arranged for Ping and her mom to travel to Beijing for free open heart surgery! But Ping was more excited about the big city than the surgery!

“There were so many buildings and so many cars!” exclaims Ping.

Just days after they arrived, surgeons repaired Ping’s damaged heart, and it wasn’t long before she was feeling well enough to take a little trip – this time to the world-famous Beijing zoo, where she saw panda bears for the very first time!

“No one else from my class has ever been here. I never thought I would really be in Beijing and see a panda!  He’s so cute,” says Ping happily.

Today, Ping is back home and feeling better than she has her entire life. And of course she loves showing off the pictures of her day at the zoo and her time in the big city!

“Thank you, CBN, for giving me free surgery,” says Ping gratefully.  “Every time I look at my pictures from my trip to Beijing, I will think of you!”
