CBN.com —Mejin, 6, got cholera after she drank a glass of water.  The  water had come from the nearby river, the only source available to her community in a remote part of Haiti.  Mejin’s mother, Cristala, told us it’s always been that way.

“I always drank from the water.  I gave my children water from the river too.  Now I see death in the water.”

Each morning Cristala comes down to the river to collect water in a bucket for her children.  But sadly the river water claimed the life of her infant son just a few months ago—because she didn’t know the water had become dangerous.  Ironically, the river that passes by Cristala’s village, is the source of all the Cholera in Haiti.

Now Mejin had cholera too, and was fighting for her life.

“She was throwing up and had dysentery,” said Cristala with a far off look in her eyes.“I knew something was wrong, but I did not know it was cholera.”

“The day that Operation Blessing arrived in Mejin’s village, we immediately saw just how sick Mejin had become.   An Operation Blessing medical staff member immediately started an IV in the foot of the already dehydrated girl.  We then took her to a hospital many miles down the road, which had been set up to treat Cholera.  Mejin spent the next 5 days there on an I-V drip, which saved her life.

“Because of the flooding I had not been able to get out of our village to take her to the hospital,” said Cristala.  “If Operation Blessing had not come, I think my Mejin would have died.”

And to help prevent cholera from spreading in the village, Operation Blessing provided water purification devices to the  dozens of families who live there, including one for Cristala and Mejin.

“After we got the filter, I was not afraid of the water anymore!” said Cristala. “God sent you to help me and Mejin.  But so many others in other villages still need your help. I hope you will help them too.”
