CBN.com -- Many children in America go hungry. For some, the only food they get comes on school days. On the weekends, there’s nothing. This fact really hit home for Elizabeth Johnson.
“I was a teacher, and I saw kids at the door of the cafeteria at breakfast time on Monday morning, and oftentimes they hadn’t had anything to eat since they left school on Friday,” says Elizabeth.
Julie Smith, director of Samaritan’s Kitchen in Wilkesboro, North Carolina says the statistics are staggering. “About 1 in 4 children in the state of North Carolina are at risk of going hungry, and we do everything that we can to prevent that from happening,” says Julie.
Samaritan’s Kitchen decided to fill backpacks with food for the children to take home for the weekend. To do that, they went to Operation Blessing, who gladly provided food for the program
Susan Blackburn is the principal of Miller’s Creek Elementary, where the program has really taken off. “For us to be able to provide that backpack is priceless, because good nutrition leads to good achievement and ability to learn,” says Susan.
“The donations that we receive from Operation Blessing, there is no way that we can say thank you enough to those folks that make that possible,” says Julie Smith. “Through their donations and through their kindness and through their generosity we’re able to pass that forward to the folks that we serve.”
