CBN.com -- On a long highway between San Antonio and El Paso, Texas, Rachel Hernandez works as a janitorial supervisor at a highway rest stop. She gets up at 4am every morning to go to work, just so she can provide for her family.
“It’s kind of hard sometimes to get up and just walk or just get up and try to start your day,” says Rachel. “It’s very hard to be able to pick up groceries, to pay the light bill, fix my cars if they break down. I don’t know where to start. I have to be there. And i have to be the strongest one.”
Rachel supports a family of eight, who all live in a three-bedroom mobile home. Her husband, Ruben, is unable to work. He’s having ongoing chemotherapy for bladder cancer.
“It’s just hard for me not to work,” says Ruben. “I’ve always managed to work, all the time. And now, I can’t work.”
Pastor Mike McDaniel says the Hernandez family is not alone.
“There are approximately 900 families that live in this area and they say, that statistically, 90% of them are in poverty,” says Mike.
But there is help for these families. Mike runs a food distribution put on by Cowboy Fellowship in the small town of Center Point, Texas. Operation Blessing provides the ministry with food boxes, cleaning supplies and diapers.
“I don’t have a lot of resources,” says Rachel. “And yes, I do depend on that, and so does my family.”
Rachel decided to be a part of helping her neighbors, who were struggling just as she was.
“The first time I gave out a box, it made me feel like the biggest person in the world,” says Rachel. “Like, ‘oh my god, I just gave out a box of food to someone who really needed it.’ It’s not just me. It’s them too.”
“I think Rachel ought to be mayor,” says Mike. “She has shared what Operation Blessing has given Cowboy Fellowship, Cowboy Fellowship has given to Rachel, and Rachel now ensures that everyone in this area receives the same blessing.”
“I never knew, I never knew, that there were still people out there, that cared like that. I really didn’t,” says Ruben.
“It’s such a blessing to be able to give, what I got given,” says Rachel. “It’s just, it’s amazing. It’s amazing.”
