You Can Love Your Work

CBN.com -- Like generations before them, Adamu and his son Musa are nomadic herdsman.  They enjoy their lives, but their work was getting increasingly difficult because both father and son were going blind.

“I was out in the bush gathering herbs one day when the bark of a tree fell into my eyes.  My eyes watered up and hurt so bad it was difficult to see,” says Adamu. “My son also had eye problems. They started with itching, redness, and pain. Nothing we did helped him.”

Because they live in such an isolated part of northern Nigeria, getting medical help was out of the questions. Shamans tried charms to ward off evil spirits, but Adamu’s and Musa’s eyesight was only getting worse.

“I tried everything I could, but nothing helped us,” says Adamu. “I hoped and prayed that we would find a lasting solution someday.”

Then they heard that Operation Blessing was planning a medical mission in a neighboring village. The Operation Blessing team made a grueling 12-hour ride through the mountains and across a flooded river to the remote village. Adamu and his family walked six hours to get there.

This was the first time any medical team had come to this remote area. Adamu and his son waited with hundreds of other villagers to be treated by real doctors. The Operation Blessing doctor knew immediately that the father and son had infections that would have eventually left them blind.

They only needed vitamins and eye drops to clear up the problem. As they started the long trek  home, Adamu and his family were to happy that after four years, they would finally get relief.

“My heart is filled with joy,” says Adamu. “I feel like crying. Thank you so much.”

“I’m truly grateful for the medicine I got,” says Musa. “Thank you!”
