CBN.com —When Lesly was born in a remote village near Livingston, Guatemala, her parents knew immediately that their baby´s life was in danger.
“My own extended family told me to kill my daughter!” Sebastian, the girl’s father told us. “We thought someone might break into the house and steal her and then kill her.”
Lesly was born with a cleft palate. In some communities like this, the baby´s condition was thought bring a curse on the area. It has been reported that four babies with cleft palates have already been killed here.
“We hid her. We covered her face with a blanket when we went outside. After a while we couldn´t hide her anymore,” said Ana Maria, Lesly’s mother.
Meanwhile Lesly faced other challenges, including malnutrition.
“When my wife fed her, she would choke trying to swallow the milk,” said Sebastian.
“The milk just came out her nose,” added Maria. “I wondered if she might die in spite of our efforts.”
When an Operation Blessing medical team came to a nearby village, Sebastian and Maria took her to see the doctor there. We then quickly set up free surgery for Lesly at the closest hospital, about a three hour drive from their village.
It’s now been a year since that life changing surgery, and Lesly is doing great! In fact, while we were there, the family held a special “Service of Thanksgiving” in the village church.
“Through my daughter´s surgery, you have brought happiness to me and to my husband,” said Maria. “Thank you with all my heart for what you´ve done for our family.”
