CBN.com —It has been a devastating winter for the residents of Breezy Point, New York.  Although Hurricane Sandy hit in late October, many people here are still without water, electricity, and basic necessities.

“Pretty much lost all of everything,” says one storm victim. “All the electric was under water, all my appliances, all the furniture, beds, most of the clothing was damaged.”

But the people in Breezy Point have not had to face this disaster alone.  Since the first critical hours following the storm, Operation Blessing has been here.  Now they are one of the only organizations still helping Breezy Point’s storm victims recover.

“Operation Blessing had a huge trailer in our community here,” says one Breezy Point resident. “They offered to come over and move the debris and the couches and the furniture and everything. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it without the assistance.”

Another storm victim agrees. “I had no floor, they’re putting in the floor for me, and helping with the plumbing and electricity to help me get started.”

Operation Blessing director of disaster relief Jody Herrington-Gettys, says they have worked on over 400 homes.

“A lot of that was the gutting out and the cleaning of homes, but now we’re rebuilding,” says Jody. “So, we’ll be taking one house at a time, two houses at a time, three houses at a time, but as we progress, on each project, each home, other people see the progress and it gives them encouragement. It gives them strength knowing they can rebuild their lives too.”

As the people of Breezy Point rebuild their lives, they will never forget those that came in their time of need.

“It’s just incredible the burden that has been taken off of our shoulders to some degree, at least in terms of the amount of work that was left to do so we appreciate the help,” says another Breezy Point resident.

“I felt hopeless, and they brought hope,” says another storm victim. “They brought hope to me by helping me. They didn’t expect something from me, just came to help.”

“Operation Blessing has been another way of God showing me that everything will be okay, that we will get through it, that what will be will be, but that we will be able to come back and have everything like we had it before.”
