CBN.com —A look from above Breezy Point, New York shows the destruction Superstorm Sandy left behind. In this close-knit community, floodwaters destroyed 2,800 homes. A six-alarm fire left 100 more in ruins.

“This storm, Sandy, was the worst we ever had. It was devastating,” says Barbara Joyce.

Barbara has lived in Breezy Point since she was five, the daughter of a police officer. With no family close by and Sandy bearing down, Barbara took refuge at a friend’s house.

“I left at three o’clock the night before, some people stayed and they almost died,” says Barbara. “People had to run into the attic because the water was so high.”

Barbara’s home took on ten feet of water, so she lost most of her belongings. Photos of a lifetime of memories were destroyed.  It left this three-time cancer survivor shattered, and for the first time in her life - homeless.

“I was suffering, I was struggling because I was ruined,” says Barbara. “Now where am I going to go?”

Barbara stayed with friends as long as she could, but had no place to call home.

“I know what it is to be homeless and I can feel for the people who are out there in the street because I was there,” says Barbara.

Without flood insurance, Barbara didn’t have the resources to rebuild. Thankfully, Operation Blessing was already on the scene and met Barbara just a few days after the storm.

“Operation Blessing were the first people to give me a hand, they were there from day one,” says Barbara.

Teams of volunteers began the cleanup process and helped Barbara salvage what she could.  And when director of U.S. disaster relief Jody Gettys met Barbara and heard of her struggles, she put in motion a much bigger plan.  Operation Blessing would surprise Barbara with a totally rebuilt and furnished home.

“Today is reveal day and we are so excited because in less than three hours we will be welcoming miss Barbara Joyce home,” says Operation Blessing’s Jody Gettys. “As you can see behind me, there’s lots of activity in the house. We are moving in furniture, they’re cleaning up the house. Outside they’re planting flowers making the landscaping beautiful, because we’re going to give this homeowner a surprise of a lifetime.”

“It’s such a good surprise, honest, I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am,” says Barbara. “It took my stress away, my struggling, my suffering.”

Barbara is no longer homeless.  Once again, she has a place to call her own.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” says Barbara. “I am so happy, so blessed and so grateful because of you Operation Blessing.”
