CBN.com —After her husband died, Maria couldn’t find regular work. In the rural part of Honduras where she lives with her daughter, the only jobs available are as a farm laborers. Unfortunately, she doesn’t always get hired.
“Sometimes they would tell me that the jobs were for men and not for women, ‘because women are no good at hard labor’ they would say.”
Meanwhile Maria’s daughter Heidi has to wake up by herself each morning, eat a meager breakfast, and get ready for school.
“I knew my mama had to go to work, but I didn´t like to be alone. I was afraid,” Heidi told us.
Before his death, Maria’s husband had planted some crops next to their home. Maria dreamt of doing that again, so she could be close to her daughter. But she didn’t have money to buy seeds and fertilizer. Maria even tried going to the bank to get a loan to buy seeds, but they turned her down.
“That night we had no food to eat. I was so scared about what would happen the next day. What would I do to feed my child?”
Then Operation Blessing gave Maria and twenty other widows and single mothers the seedling potatoes, fertilizer and insect spray they needed to start their own small farms.
“I couldn´t even imagine that people, who didn´t know me, would help me like this!” Linda said.
In just two months, Maria made $250 profit from selling her potatoes! Now they have money for food, and enough left over to grow a whole new crop.
“Gracias Operación Bendición,” said little Maria with a smile.
