CBN.com — Four-year-old Lucy and her sister were so sick with Malaria that they had to be carried by their mother into the CBN's Operation Blessing medical clinic near their home. Both girls were sick, but Lucy's case was far worse.

Dr Deddeh Smith checked little Lucy, "She'd been having fever. Lucy was severely anemic, and she was drowsy."

Dr. Smith added that Lucy's malaria and anemia were so severe, that without an immediate transfusion, she would die. So Operation Blessing rushed Lucy and her sister to the nearest hospital, which was two hours away. There we arranged for the girls to receive IV's with medicine and the needed transfusions for Lucy.

Dr Deddeh Smith explains how dangerous Lucy's condition was. "In Liberia we have the malignant stage malaria, a malaria that kills easily, especially children under five."

With Lucy's life saved and her condition on the mend, we drove out to see where she lived. We discovered this broken down shanty. The roof leaks and the walls are open to wind, weather and mosquitoes. It is the worst house in the entire community.

Lucy's grandmother is a widow. She works long hours under the sun making charcoal. She carrys a heavy burden. "I feel so helpless. Sometimes I can't sleep because I worry all the time."

So Operation Blessing brought materials and paid workmen to build Lucy and her grandmother a new house.

Soon the walls were up, the roof was in place, and it was time to get Lucy from the hospital.

With a new house and a healthy granddaughter, this family feels hopeful about the future for the first time in years. "I have never had such a nice house like this. You have saved our lives. Thank you," said Lucy's grateful grandmother.
