The Xies live in a remote village in a mountainous region of China. The only way out of town is by boat -- which has made it hard for the Xies to get proper medical care for their children.
Eight years ago, their daughter Jin was born with a serious heart defect.
"I can't tell you how sad I was to see that everyone else's children were healthy, but my daughter was not," Mrs. Xie recalls. "I felt so sorry for her."
The Xies are farmers. Their small farm generates only enough rice for them to survive. So, in order to pay for their daughter's heart surgery, Mr. Xie had to borrow close to $3,000. To meet their financial obligation, the couple started raising silkworms.
Then Mrs. Xie had a second child, a baby boy named Xie Wu. He was born in the family boat on the way to the hospital, and like his sister, he also had a dangerous heart condition. This time, there was no way they could afford surgery.
Mr. Xie says, "It was a great blow to our family. I was so depressed that I didn't even have strength to walk."
The Xies didn't want to tell any one what happened.
"I didn't want people to talk about us. But some of my relatives found out and said my family had been cursed," Mr. Xie says.
One day, Mr. Xie's cousin saw a story on television about CBN. It said CBN was offering free surgery for poor children with heart problems. The family quickly sent in an application for Wu.
CBN responded right away. They set up a surgery, and little Wu came through the operation with flying colors.
Mrs. Xie says, "It means a lot to me that CBN would care about us that much."
