After 10 years of marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Zhu still couldn’t have children.
“We had been to the doctor many times and had tried lots of medications,” says Mr. Zhu. “My parents suggested we adopt.”
The Zhus were just about to give up when the doctor gave them some startling news. They were pregnant — with twins!
Nine months later, the baby boys were both born with cleft lips and palates. Mrs. Zhu fainted when she saw them. “After waiting so long, this seemed very unfair!” she says. It was hard for Mr. Zhu to accept what had happened as well.
Doctors didn’t offer much hope either.
“They said they had never seen such severe cleft lips and palates before. They said the babies would need surgery right away or they would always be at risk for infections,” says Mr. Zhu.
At two weeks old, the twins got pneumonia.
“Watching their little bodies become more and more sick was really scary,” says Mrs. Zhu.
”I worried about them, and I wondered if they would they grow up to be like normal children,” says Mr. Zhu.
Mr. Zhu works hard driving tractors, but he only makes $80 a month. That meant cleft lip and palate surgeries were out of the question. Some people said that the Zhus should give up their babies, but one doctor suggested that they call CBN for help. They did, and within a week, CBN had set up free surgeries for the boys!
“I was so happy when I heard about the kindhearted people in the United States and how they were going to help us. I could hardly wait to see the twins all fixed up,” Mrs. Zhu says happily.
The transformation brought smiles to the twins’ faces and joy to the Zhus’ hearts!
“Since the operations, my twins are getting healthier and healthier every day. They’re growing up fast and looking lovely,” says Mr. Zhu.
“I am extremely grateful, very thankful,” says Mr. Zhu. “Now, the twins will have a bright future.”
“I used to think there was no hope and life was too hard. It’s so good to know there is someone like CBN out there willing to help,” says a very thankful Mrs. Zhu.
