To Answer A Grandmother’s Prayer

Wei and Ming Sun always dreamed of having their own family. But they’re both permanently deaf. They have seen many of their deaf friends give birth to healthy babies who could hear. So when their little Lu Jia was born, they expected her to be able to hear, too. But she couldn’t. Her grandmother remembers:
“I couldn’t believe it when the doctor told me Lu Jia was deaf,” her grandmother said. “I started to cry. We all cried.”
“I was so disappointed,” said (signed) her mother, Ming. “I really thought that she would be okay. I want her to speak and to sing. I don’t want her to grow up and not be able to hear or talk like her father and myself. I know what it’s like. It’s hard.”
Wei doesn’t let his disability stop him. He works as a barber. But he doesn’t have many customers.
“It’s because I can’t communicate well,” Wei signed. “I only make 50 cents per hair cut.”
And he spent every last penny on a hearing aid for his daughter. Then, Lu Jia’s grandmother tried to teach her how to speak. Everywhere Grandma went, Lu Jia went.
“I tried so hard. I did everything I could for Lu Jia,” her grandmother said. “I read books to her and taught her about colors. I tried to teach her to say ‘tree,’ ‘river,’ and ‘fish.’”
But two years later, she could barely say a word. The hearing aid Lu Jia’s father had purchased was inexpensive and proved to be ineffective.
“I didn’t know what else we could do!” Wei signed.
Then Lu Jia’s grandmother heard about CBN.
“I was so excited that there was an organization that would help the poor to hear,” she said. “Maybe they would help my little Lu Jia, so she wouldn’t have to suffer and she could live a normal life.”
