CBN.com —In 25 years, Tum has never had a day off from selling vegetables in the market. She goes to work even when she is sick. There are just too many people depending on her.
“I work day and night, and get hardly any rest, so that my family will have food to eat. Everything I do is for them, because I love them,” says Tum.
Tum provides for her elderly parents and two nieces whose parents abandoned them.
“The responsibility is overwhelming. But they are innocent children who needed love and care,” says Tum.
Her nieces appreciate her. “Aunty Tum is fun. She draws cartoons and tells us stories. She cooks good food for us.”
Unfortunately most of the money Tum earned went to pay the rent on her stall in the market. She was deeply in debt and considered taking a housekeeping job at a hotel in another city.
“I needed that job, because it paid more…and we really needed it. But my family also needed me to be with them too,” says Tum.
When CBN’s Orphan’s Promise heard about Tum, we helped her by giving her small business a boost. First we paid the rent on her market stall for the next year and we gave her money to increase her inventory.
Then we trained her to run the small business more efficiently and taught her how to save and pay off her debts. Her business has been so successful, that she now supplies vegetables to a grocery store and restaurant—along with her sales in the market.
“My income is now more than the amount that I would have made working in the hotel. We have everything we need for our family,” says Tum.
And with CBN’s help, Tum has also prayed to become a Christian. Now, she makes it a point to take off one day a week to go to church.
“God is blessing me in every way,” says Tum. “Thank you, CBN, for reaching out to us. You kept our family together. I’ve never been so happy!”
