CBN.com —“I heard the rain, then I heard the hail,” says Texas tornado victim Gene May. “And the hail was hitting so much that it sounded like someone was just standing there chunking rocks. My daughter called me and said ‘Mom find some place to hide. The tornado is coming.’”

Gene May’s home was right in the path of a deadly EF-4 tornado that tore through Texas.

“I looked down at my little dog and said, ‘Where am I gonna go? Where are we going to go?’ And then I thought of the closet, it was the only place that I knew might be sturdy enough. I was asking God, ‘Please make it go away. Please make it go away.’ And I felt like He was in the closet with me with His arms wrapped around me, holding on to me. A few minutes later the sounds quit and the wind kinda let up a little bit and I crawled out of there.”

Gene’s home was destroyed. Not a single wall stood, only the closet that protected her. All of her belongings and memories scattered among the rubble.  “I was just in so much awe of everything because I could not believe the devastation.”

She had no idea what to do next, but relief was one the way. Operation Blessing arrived shortly after the storm. Volunteers helped her salvage the few mementos left behind. “I was surprised that that many people would come out and help everybody. I am just so thankful that there are just so many people out here that really want to help, that care about everybody.”

Operation Blessing continues to work in the hardest hit areas of the Midwest, sending hundreds of volunteers to help people recover, and protect what is left of their homes.

Gene says she’s grateful for the donors who support the work of Operation Blessing. “Keep giving, and keep giving and keep giving, because they are there for you. Operation Blessing is a blessing. It is a blessing. Thank you.”
