CBN.com — Every morning as she left for school, 12-year-old Het watched her dad Tun struggle as he carried a bucket to get water from a distant stream.
“My dad has only one leg,” said Het, “so I worry about him getting water alone. I wish I could help him with it, but he wants me to go to school.”
Tun lost his leg when he stepped on a landmine many years ago. Since then, his wife has took over working in the rice fields while Tun took on the household chores. Three times a day he is also forced to limp deep into a forest to collect water.
“Each time it took me a hour to get the water,” said Turn. “My leg and my whole body are in so much pain that I can’t sleep at night.”
And the water he collected was murky and filled with bacteria. During dry season, he has to climb down into a hole in the ground to fill his bucket.
“The water smells like mud.” said Het. “Sometimes I see bugs and frogs in it. It tastes bad and it makes my stomach hurt.”
“I feel sorry for my daughter,” said Tun when he watches his daughter drinking the filthy water. “I’m afraid that she’ll become seriously ill and die from drinking it.”
So CBN dug a well for Tun right near his home.
“The water from the CBN well looks so clear.” said Het. “It smells good, and it tastes delicious!”
Now, Tun not only has fresh water to drink and bathe in, he also has enough for his vegetable garden.
“I am so happy with our new well,” said Tun. “I used to plant cabbages and cucumbers but I never had enough water for them. Now I have those plus garlic and beans!”
