DISASTER RELIEF

Feeding Little Children in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, South Carolina - In the wake of debris and damage left behind by unprecedented flooding in Columbia, South Carolina, the trucks delivering food to Crane Creek Elementary School were struggling to make it there in time for lunch.

The hungry young students were sometimes waiting three hours past their usual lunchtime to receive the meal they needed to continue learning.

So the principal of the school turned to Operation Blessing's disaster relief team for help. OBI's food manager and production chef, Thomas Wiley, rose to the challenge of helping 180 children in need of a nutritious meal.

In addition to providing hot meals for the children, Operation Blessing also began providing food for the 29 staff members who were so diligently looking out for their students.

"It's been a real blessing for us, as Operation Blessing, to be able to work in this community and to go to Crane Creek Elementary to provide hot meals for the kids when they're literally looking at [the possibility of] not having a lunch for their first day back to school," Wiley said.

The children were so grateful that they crafted hand-made cards and delivered them to OBI staff as a sign of thanks.
