CBN.com —Gustavo was excited the day he went to visit his aunt and uncle, who lived more than 200 miles from his home in Peru.
"I got to ride on a fast boat when I went to see them!" recalled Gustavo with a smile.
What the ten-year-old didn't understand was why he had to go. His parents were penniless and no longer able even to provide food for him.
It had been a tough year for Gustavo's family. When his grandma almost died, the family borrowed an $1100 high-interest, short-term loan to pay for her treatment. Paying off the loan was impossible for the family.
"We had to pay $50 dollars A DAY in order to settle the loan," said Margarita, Gustavo's mother. "We just couldn't afford it."
The family sold everything, including an old car which Gustavo's dad had been using for a taxi business. After they sold the car and most of their possessions, they were only able to pay off half of the debt.
When Operation Blessing learned about the family, we paid of the balance of their loan, and helped Gustavo's mom set up a fruit and vegetable stand outside their home.
"When I saw that Operation Blessing had all those fruits and vegetables for me, I was very happy. I had no idea they would help me like that!" said Margarita.
My business is going very well, because my neighbors love my fresh vegetables and fruits—and they can buy them here without going to the market!
There was one more thing they wanted to do: to bring Gustavo home. Operation Blessing paid for the boat trip, and soon Gustavo was running into his mother's arms.
"I like my mama's hugs!" he told us. "I was happy to see my mom and brothers and sister again. I missed them so much!"
"I was excited to see him and hold him in my arms again," added Margarita. "It was so unexpected."
Today, Gustavo is also able to attend school for the first time in his life, thanks to another small grant from Operation Blessing.
"All this is a gift from God," said Margarita. "My vegetable stand, my children going to school and my Gustavo home with me! Thanks Operation Blessing for everything!"
