CBN.com —Luz and her four children live on the banks of a river in Peru, in a shanty made of scrap wood. Conditions here are primitive, but they are made worse because the house is surrounded by water which pushes up through the floor boards during flood season. Luz’s first concern was for safety.
“I couldn’t to fix my house because we had no money. I was afraid it would collapse,” she told us.
One day her seven-year-old son Francis was playing at the back of the house when he accidentally fell into the river. He didn’t know how to swim.
“I was washing and heard the splash so I ran outside,” said Luz with tears in her eyes.
She watched helplessly as Francis slipped under the water and prayed that he would surface. When he did, she was able to rescue him.
The river has become a dangerous place for the family, not just of the location of the house, but because they have to fish in the river to find food. Even five-year-old Carol knows you shouldn’t eat a catfish from a polluted river!
“I had to eat an ugly fish,” Carol said. “I don’t like it because it eats garbage.”
So CBN's Operation Blessing helped the family in two important ways. First, we built them a new house which floats constant fifteen inches above the water, even during flood season.
Next we gave Luz a grant to start an ice cream and drink stand in front of her new home. Because there is a school nearby, business is good, and Luz is making enough money to support her family.
“Now I’m happy because I have my new house and new business to feed my children. Now they lack nothing.”
