CBN.com — In the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro, life is a challenge for Maasai women like Susan.

Three years ago, a drought killed most of the livestock the village depended upon. For Susan, the situation was even more critical, because that's when she also lost her husband.

"I now have to care for my children and make sure they have food and an education," she told us. "After my husband died, I worked on people's farms for pay and I cut firewood to sell."

Susan also struggles, like the rest of the women in the community, to find fresh water for drinking, bathing and cooking.

They sleep and cook their meals in a tiny mud hut where the ventilation is bad. The children get sick from breathing in all the smoke.

The first thing CBN's Operation Blessing did for Susan and the community after meeting them, was dig a deep well to provide clean water for everyone. Next, we built a school where three of Susan's children now attend. And finally, to help Susan and the other women earn some extra money, Operation Blessing started a 50 acre farm, complete with drip irrigation, to grow tomatoes and other vegetables to eat or sell in the market.

"What you have done for us helps a great deal. The vegetables we grow on the farm feed my family. I am seeing a brighter future for us!" Susan added.

And with the extra money she earned from the farm project, Susan was able to buy all the materials needed to build a new house for her family. The old mud hut will now only be used for cooking.

"We see God bringing new opportunity through the work Operation Blessing is doing here!" she said.
