Escaping the Paycheck to Paycheck Life

You Can Love Your Work

CBN.com"Right after my marriage fell apart, I basically lost everything," says Carolyn Howard. "I pretty much had to start my life over again, and doing that at age 30 with two kids to take care of is pretty scary."

Carolyn Howard was working part-time as a nutrition consultant and could not even afford to pay child care.

"I had a lot of questions and a lot of doubts and a lot of fears about how I was going to do it and how we were going to get through that time and how I was going to rebuild my life and be able to have the life that I wanted for my children," Carolyn says.

Although she prayed for guidance, she was tempted on several occasions to stop her giving altogether.

"I can remember sitting down at my computer and looking at my budget, and looking at my income and my expenses and just realizing that I couldn"t even make ends meet," she says. "I thought, "Surely God doesn"t expect a single mom going through a divorce who can barely make ends meet to give 10 percent of her income.' You know, I can't even survive on 100 percent of my income, much less 90 percent of my income."

But Carolyn, a CBN partner, continued to trust God for her provision.

"It finally hit me after a few days that I need God more than ever right now," Carolyn says. "I need God to come through for me and so I need to be faithful in what I can do and be faithful in, and that's continuing to tithe and continuing to give, and continuing to put the Kingdom of God first in my life."

Within months, she could see God's faithfulness. A family member wrote her a check to pay for two weeks of day care. Another person gave her a car. Then, she was offered a position as the director of a nutrition clinic with the highest salary she had ever earned.

"In addition to God providing so wonderfully with my finances', He's also provided a wonderful godly fiancé," she says.

Today, Carolyn is building up her own nutrition consulting practice and has learned to trust God in all areas of her life.

"It was just like God was saying, "You know what, you're going to be OK. I'm going to provide for you, step by step, day by day. Just keep trusting and keep giving. Make sure your heart is in the right place and things are going to work out." God just showed me that He can provide, and He"s our provider."
