– Juan Fonseca was flat out worried about a mountain of debt he and his wife, Victoria, had accumulated rapidly. Juan was from Puerto Rico, making him eligible to apply for a commission in the U.S. Army. When he got it, they transferred to the States and started acquiring the American dream — by doing what everyone else did. Use their credit cards!
Juan recalls, “Everyone was living the same way. I wasn’t different. Even Christians live this way. So why change?”
At the same time, the Fonsecas found an old favorite program they used to watch in Puerto Rico.
The 700 Club broadcast began with: “Overcoming a $20,000 debt."
Something began to register.
“We were conscious of the debt we were in, but it wasn’t something that we could determine where [we went] wrong,” says Victoria. “It was a sense that something was not aligned to those principles that Pat talks about.”
Juan sat down and totaled up the debt. He realized it was $70,000! He prayed and asked God to forgive him. Juan says God told him to immediately start giving. So he joined The 700 Club. Then he prayed for guidance how to clean up the financial mess they were in. The answer to that prayer came in the mail a few days later … a teaching series by Pat Robertson he received for joining The 700 Club called Secrets of Financial Prosperity.
Pat said, “For each one of you, I recommend strongly that you get out of credit card debt.”
“The first thing he said was ‘Give me all your credit cards,’ ” Victoria recalls. “I said, ‘What? Ok, no problem.’ I gave him the cards. But when I saw he had scissors in his hand and he started to cut them, I started to cry! Remember that I was dependent on credit! But then we sat, and we were talking about it. There was a conviction in my heart. I understood.”
“Now we buy what we need, and we don’t use credit,” says Juan. “We did many things to free up money. With that money, we started paying off our debt.”
The Fonsecas began to increase their giving and prayed over their finances every step of the way! In one year the Fonsecas paid off $40,000 of their $70,000 debt. They hope to be debt-free by the end of the second year. By the way, Juan now feels he has a job to do.
“This is Pat’s principles in Spanish,” he says. “I translated them in order to take them to the missionary field. I teach them in Nicaragua and Puerto Rico."
“Now I understand His will is to be debt-free so I can put my house in order and move on to the next step of my life.”
