You Can Love Your Work

CBN.com - Charlie and Amy Scott love spending time at their home in Texas with their three young kids.

Before they took on raising a family, they were a young couple, fresh out of college, trying to get ahead. That was tough to do considering they owed tens of thousands of dollars in student loans.

Charlie was weighed down with the debt. “As a guy you just feel like you have a bag of bricks on your back, and every day you're just waking up carrying just these huge burdens.”

At the time Charlie was a manager at an ice plant while Amy taught elementary school.  Charlie wanted to use his engineering degree, but so far, he hadn’t found anything. Not only were we challenged to try to get out of debt, but we were also challenged with me as a husband, as a provider trying to find a fulfilling vocation.”

Even then, they were determined to give. Amy says, “No matter what else was going on in our lives, this belongs to God.”

Charlie agrees with Amy, “No matter how big our debt was we were going to make tithing one of the cornerstones of our marriage.”

So they gave to their church and also to CBN. Though some wondered, was that the best way to get out of debt?’

Charlie understands why others would ask that question. “How can you get rid of debt at the same time giving money? It doesn’t make sense.”

Amy answers the hard question. “We had a peace in our hearts that this is what we’re supposed to do.”

Charlie adds, “If you stick with it and you’re faithful and trust God, God always comes through. He’s faithful.”

After two years, Charlie says God opened up an opportunity for him in the oil and gas industry as an engineer. It was a perfect fit. “I knew it was of God because it was something I couldn’t even dream up. We didn’t raise our standard of living, and we just used that surplus that I got from this new job month after month to apply that to our debt.”

Soon, Charlie got a raise and his income tripled. The Scotts were able to pay off their student loans sooner than they ever thought possible.

Charlie describes the feeling that day. “When we walked off together and mailed off that last check, it was a breath of fresh air.”

Amy continues, “It was awesome. We just felt totally free.”

Now Charlie and Amy had the money to buy their dream home. Charlie is doing so well with his career that Amy quit her teaching job to spend more time with their kids.

The Scotts believe all this happened because they did things God’s way.

Amy encourages others, “Trust God. Try it, and see what happens.”

Charlie says, “With obedience comes blessing. When you trust God and you take a step out and you apply that faith, that’s living faith. That just shows the power of God in our lives.”

Being obedient to God's truth made an incredible difference for Gary and Evelyn. Join them in partnering with CBN.
