CBN.com - Joe and Leslie Gregory of Greenfield, Illinois, are thankful for the life they have – a wonderful marriage, two great kids and a nice home. And on top of that, their finances are in order.
Joe says there’s a reason for all of their success. “I feel like that’s straight from the hand of God because of the tithing, because of the giving.”
Tithing and giving come naturally for the Gregorys now, but when Leslie was a young girl, she wouldn’t even part with a penny. She confesses, “Even when I would lose a tooth, I would take that money and put it under my mattress. I would get lunch money for school and instead of eating lunch, I would pocket my money. I hated spending money!”
Through the years, she never had to dip into her savings. Leslie worked three jobs to make payments on her $17,000 student loan.
During this time, she became a Christian and started going to church. Occasionally, she’d put a dollar in the offering plate. Leslie shares, “I felt like I was doing my part. I didn’t really know God wanted more from me.”
Then one Sunday in the church lobby, Leslie’s attitude about money changed. “I just heard God speak to my heart and it was loud and clear, ‘Put $100 in,’” she says. “And I thought, ‘$100!?!’ And again, He said ‘Put $100 in!’”
So she wrote the check. Leslie shares, “It felt wonderful. It was a way of pleasing Him and obeying what He had asked me to do. I just sat there in a moment with me and God and I’ve tithed ever since!” She continues with tears in her eyes, “I was able to start letting go and trusting God that He was going to take care of me. I didn’t have to hoard my money and save every little penny and fend for myself. It just felt liberating.”
Leslie believes that through her faithful giving and prayer, God provided her dream job as a property manager. She remembers, “I asked Him to tell the boss to come and ask me to work there, and that was exactly what happened.”
When she married Joe, the two immediately began tithing as a couple. Within two years, they paid of Leslie’s student loans, as well as $10,000 of debt Joe brought into the marriage. They got the titles to both of their cars and made a down payment on their first home. Through the years, Leslie and Joe have gotten consistent raises and some big bonuses, too!
Joe says, “It’s really liberating and freeing to take what I know is a gift to me and give it back. Giving is just as much a part of your Christian walk as daily Bible study and prayer.”
Leslie agrees, “Yes, there’s no reason to put your security in money. It’s not a treasure in heaven and you can’t take it with you. If your heart’s right, your money should be right!”
