CBN.com - For twenty years, Ken Teel has been self-employed as a music teacher and his wife Debbie has worked in human resources. With their combined incomes, they felt financially secure freely charging vacations.
Debbie recalls, “We had four credit cards also worth of debt.”
The Teels also made bad investment decisions using a home equity line of credit to pay for the investment. As a result, they nearly lost their home.
“I’m not paying my property tax. I’m not paying personal income tax. Our bills are bigger than our income and, yeah, there was a lot of pressure, a lot of pressure,” says Ken.
Then Debbie lost her full time job and the couple had to rely on Ken’s income alone. That’s when it hit them just how deeply in debt they were.
Ken remembers, “That balance just keeps growing and growing and growing and then all of a sudden oh my gosh. We’re never going to get out of this. This is like a mountain!”
With more bills than money at the end of each month, they finally reached a breaking point.
“At night time I wake up, can’t sleep. And uh one night I was completely, completely stressed to the ability of my capacity to take it. I mean I was just absolutely to the end. And uh, and the Lord spoke to me and said, ‘I am going to take care of you,’” remembers Ken.
One day after watching a teaching on 700 Club, Ken and Debbie decided to tithe and give from the money Ken made as a music teacher. One place they gave was to CBN.
Debbie says, “I know that what we were doing was biblical and it was what God wanted us to do, and I just knew that he would have blessed it.”
And Ken found odd jobs to make extra money on the side.
“Do the math. It doesn’t add up. And yet we’re making it. We’re paying our mortgage. We’re eating. We’re blessed,” recalls Ken.
Within months of their decision to tithe, Debbie got a new job, and soon after that her first bonus check.
Debbie recalls, “God has shown me through all of this, that He’s in control. He’s our provider. And that you can’t put your heart in money and in God at the same time. You have to have it in one place. You have to have it in God.”
“Let him lead you. He’ll show you to where you can go from lack to sufficiency to abundance to giving in abundance to others. It’s amazing!,” says Ken.
Being obedient to God's truth made an incredible difference for Ken and Debbiei.
