No More Mortgage Payments

CBN.com – CBN Partners John and Nancy Nakamura were doing everything right when it came to their finances. They had always been thrifty. They never kept balances on their credit card, and chose to drive older cars. But in 1995, when Nancy turned on her car radio and heard a discussion on debt, she was prompted to take further action.

“I knew this was the Lord’s leading because I never turned on the radio in that car, and it immediately was talking about how Christians need to get out of debt," Nancy says.

The Nakamura’s only big debt was their $72,000 mortgage. So John and Nancy decided to do something radical – double their monthly payments and pay off their mortgage.

“This was, in essence, another step in saying it’s a new life, that we don’t have that burden of a mortgage anymore,” says John.

To do that, they cut their expenses even more, and Nancy took on extra clients in her neuro-muscular therapy business. And they took another step in their giving – they decided to join CBN’s Thousand Club.

“We believe that giving is Biblical and the Lord has blessed us richly, and we were able to make conscious decisions of living without other things so that we were able to not only accelerate our payments on the home, but to increase our giving,” says John.

By John’s 40th birthday they had reached their goal – they had completely paid off the house! But two years later, John was laid off from his job at a software company. Rather than panic, the Nakamura’s saw how God had been preparing them for this moment for years. The couple was debt free – and thankful for the way God had taken care of them. In fact, even during the layoff, they continued to tithe on his unemployment check – and pay their monthly Thousand Club pledge to CBN.

“From our perspective, there really was no decision to be made. We had made a commitment to support these people and we were going to hold to that commitment during this period of time," says John.

Just 4 months after the layoff, God provided John with an even better job than he had before – at a higher salary!

“I would encourage people to give, even when it’s hard to give, because God will provide,” says Nancy.

John adds, “I would encourage people to get involved with CBN and join the Thousand Club, or whatever they’re able to provide, because through CBN they really can have a reach to the ends of the earth.”
