CBN.com —“I was single and struggling and trying to make ends meet,” says Eileen. “And I had a little girl I had to feed.”
Eileen Toohey had run out of options. An electrician by trade, she had a tough time finding work because construction jobs had dried up.
“I was getting ready to lose my home,” remembers Eileen. “I could hardly pay the mortgage, and I could hardly pay the electricity, the phone - all the utilities that I needed to pay.”
Eileen was on the verge of declaring bankruptcy, and the bank was about to foreclose on her home.
“So it came to the point where I had $200 to my name and it wasn’t enough to pay the mortgage, not enough to cover the bills, and I said, ‘Okay God, you know, I feel like this is it. I’m going to die. I’m just going to be in the streets, I’m not going to be anywhere, so I might as well give you all I have.’ So I gave God all I had. The whole $200,” says Eileen.
Eileen says it was then that things started turning around.
“I ended up getting a call from the bank that day and they called me to say ‘we’re going to reinstate your loan,’” remembers Eileen.
“And I said, ‘How is that possible?’ And they said, ‘Well, you had a relative that called in and gave all the money that you owed.'"
But Eileen says that was just the beginning. She found a permanent, full-time job, caught up on her bills, and was able to pay back her relative.
“I was being faithful with what God was giving me, and being able to say, ‘You know, Lord, I tithe and I believe your word. I believe that you will deliver me,’” says Eileen. “And he would, time and time and time again and he never failed me. Not once did he fail me.”
Years later Eileen married Leonard. She told him how God had always provided for her, and how she was convinced that it was because she was faithful to give.
"That was the one thing that God says is ‘prove me in this and see if I won’t pour you out a blessing that you cannot contain,’” says Eileen. “And so I proved him, over and over again. And he would pour out blessing after blessing that I still cannot contain.”
Before long Leonard saw how it worked in his life as well.
“As we give in faith to God, then God’s going to turn around and bless us so that then we can bless others more,” says Leonard.
CBN is one of the places where the Tooheys give.
“Any time I see them going into a third world country, seeing little kids have surgery, drinking water; those are the kind of things that excite me because it’s like, ‘Well, I know I can’t go there, and I can’t do those things, but I know that I can add to the cause,’” says Eileen.
“One of the big ones is Operation Blessing. Whenever there’s disasters, that’s the church in action,” says Leonard.
Now the Tooheys are debt free and their home is paid for.
“You really can’t afford not to tithe,” says Eileen. “The message is that God is faithful and that you can trust God no matter where you’re at financially; just be faithful because God is a good God and he wants to show off. He really wants to show off.”
