Soda Pop and Sacrifice

CBN.com – Rick and Dawn Nielson were drowning in a sea of debt–$55,000, to be exact. That staggering figure was enough to keep the couple frozen in fear.

"I lost sleep over it," Dawn recalls. "I didn't even know how we were going to pay the rent or buy food."

Adds Rick, "Mentally, it was a struggle because I couldn't see the light. There wasn't any light at the end of the tunnel. I didn't see how it was ever going to be possible for me to get level again."

Rick owed back taxes and had other financial obligations that amounted to tens of thousands of dollars. The Nielsons needed a financial miracle. That's when Dawn discovered a television program called The 700 Club and she first heard about the saving power of Jesus Christ.

"When Pat [Robertson] gave the salvation message, it was the first time I had really heard it," Dawn explains. "I got down on my knees right in front of the TV and said the prayer with him."

In the next few weeks, Dawn became a daily viewer and a CBN partner. But when she joined The 700 Club, she had to make a deal with Rick.

"I questioned whether or not we could afford it based on the financial struggles we were going through at the time," Rick recalls.

But a nonplussed Dawn countered, "I'll just quit drinking Coca-Cola. That adds up to at least $20 a month. "

Rick agreed to Dawn's suggestion saying, "If you're willing to sacrifice–giving up drinking Coca-Cola every day to give it to CBN–go ahead."

As the Nielsons gave to CBN, they began to reduce their debt load.

"First my husband got a better job, and then he kept getting raises, bonuses. We just knocked off a lot of the debt. Eventually, he got transferred, and we had the opportunity to build a house," says Dawn.

Dawn was totally sold on Pat Robertson's teaching about the Law of Reciprocity, which is based on Luke 6:38: "Give and it will be given unto you."

Today, the Nielsons are living a life they once only dreamed of. Rick now works for Harley Davidson, and he builds and races motorcycles. He even won an impressive street bike racing championship. Dawn has a day care business that is doing quite well.

They thank God daily for The 700 Club and for the opportunity to help others.
