Reporter: THESE EMMY

WINNING TALK SHOW HOSTS NOT

ONLY PLAY DOCTORS ON TV,

THEY'RE THE REAL THING.

THEY DISPENSE HELPFUL

MEDICAL ADVICE TO MILLIONS

OF VIEWERS EVERY DAY.

DR. JIM STEERS HAS A BIG

HEART FOR LITTLE PEOPLE.

YOU COME FROM A FAMILY OF

PEDIATRICIANS.

WHAT LED YOU TO FOLLOW IN

YOUR DAD'S FOOTSTEPS.

I'M THE OLDEST OF EIGHT

KIDS, SO I HAD A LOT OF KIDS

RUNNING AROUND WHEN I WAS

YOUNGER.

I THINK THAT'S JUST WHAT I

KIND OF GOT USED TO.

MY DAD MADE PEDIATRICS LOOK

FUN.

HE SAT ME DOWN WHEN I WAS

OLDER AND SAID, I DON'T WANT

TO PRESSURE YOU.

I DON'T WANT YOU TO FEEL

PRESSURED INTO GOING INTO

MEDICINE.

BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW

YOU'RE FREE TO BE ANY KIND

OF BABY DOCTOR YOU WANT TO

BE.

Reporter: THESE DAYS,

DR. JIM SHARES A PEDIATRIC

PRACTICE WITH HIS FATHER AND

BROTHER IN CALIFORNIA.

FROM THE BASICS OF EATING

AND FEEDING, TO VACCINES, HE

HELPS PARENTS BUILD

HEALTHIER LIVES.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO

HELP THEIR KIDS STAY HEALTHY

AND AVOID OBESITY.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY IS A

HUGE EPIDEMIC.

AND IT'S SAD BECAUSE I SEE

IT IN MY OFFICE EVERY DAY.

THE PARENTS AND THE KIDS.

I THINK ONE OF THE BIGGEST

THINGS PARENTS CAN DO ISTITY

IS START EARLY, WHEN THE

KIDS ARE FIRST STARTING TO

EAT FOODS.

INTRODUCE THEM TO HEALTHY

FOODS, FOODS THAT YOU GROW,

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.

IT IS GREAT TO BUILD THE

CRAVINGS OF THE KIDS, IF YOU

GIVE THEM GOOD STUFF.

FOR PARENTS WHO ALREADY

HAVE PICKY EATERS, HOW CAN

YOU GET THEM TO EAT

VEGGIES.

FIRST THEY'VE GOT TO SEE

THE PARENTS DOING IT.

SO IF YOU'RE EATING CARROTS

AND BEANS AND STRAWBERRIES

AND BLUEBERRIES.

YOU CAN HIDE IT.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS IS

A SMOOTHIE.

IT LOOKS AND TASTES LINE A

MILKSHAKE, BUT THERE ARE

OTHER THINGS IN THERE THEY

DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT.

THERE HAS BEEN HEAVY

DEBATE OVER THE SAFETY OF

VACCINES.

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THAT,

VACCINES IN CHILDREN?

VACCINES ARE A HUGELY

CONTROVERSIAL PROBLEM.

THERE IS A LOT WE DO KNOW,

AND THERE IS A LOT WE DON'T

KNOW.

WHAT WE DO KNOW IS OVER THE

YEARS, VACCINES HAVE DONE A

LOT OF GOOD.

I THINK THERE HAS BEEN A LOT

OF OVERREACTION.

ONE OF MY GOALS AS A

PEDIATRICIAN IS TO EDUCATE

THE PARENTS, OKAY?

AND KIND OF SEE WHAT THEIR

FEARS ARE.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU AFRAID

OF?

IS IT REACTION TO THIS

VACCINE OR THAT VACCINE?

HAS ANYTHING EVER HAPPENED

TO YOUR OTHER CHILDREN.

YOU HAVE TO COME UP WITH A

PLAN.

IF THIS PARENT IS GOING TO

BE RESISTANT TO THE WHOLE

VACCINE SCHEDULE, I DON'T

WANT YOU TO NONE.

LET'S PICK THE ONES YOU'RE

COMFORTABLE DOING.

I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR

THE KIDS TO EVENTUAL THE GET

ALL OF THE VACCINES OUT

THERE.

I HATE TO SEE KIDS GETTING

SICK.

Reporter: WHAT IS ONE

OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS

MOMS AND DADS ARE ASKING YOU

ON THE SHOW THESE DAYS?

ONE OF THE MOST COMMON

QUESTIONS HAS TO DO WITH

SLEEP.

NOT SLEEPING, SLEEPING TOO

MUCH.

WE COULD DO ALMOST A WHOLE

SERIES ON SLEEP WITH KIDS

AND TEENAGERS AND BABIES AND

THE WHOLE THING.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR

PARENTS TO URGE THEIR

TEENAGERS TO TAKE A NAP

DURING THE DAY.

I HAVE TWO TEENAGERS

MYSELF, AND THEY DON'T GET

ENOUGH SLEEP.

THE MASS MAJORITY OF

TEENAGERS ARE NOT SLEEPING

ENOUGH.

IT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

THEIR BRAINS ARE STILL

DEVELOPING.

AND IT IS IMPORTANT FOR

THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM AND

THEIR GROWTH.

IT IS MORE THAN JUST BEING

TIRED.

YOU DON'T GROW.

Reporter: THE DOCTORS

RECENTLY COLLABORATED ON A

BOOK "THE DOCTORS' FIVE

MINUTE HEALTH SOLUTIONS."

IN IT, JIM SHARES YEARS OF

PRACTICING MEDICINE AND OF

BEING A DAD.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST

LESSON YOU LEARNED AS A

DAD.

YOU'LL MAKE ME TEAR UP A

LITTLE BIT.

BUT MY DAUGHTER IS A SENIOR

IN HIGH SCHOOL, AND SHE IS

GRADUATING, AND SHE IS GOING

TO GO OFF OUT OF STATE FOR

COLLEGE.

WHAT I'M MOST HAPPY ABOUT,

WHAT I DID, LOOKING BACK THE

LAST 17 YEARS, I'M GLAD I

DIDN'T SPEND MORE TIME IN

THE OFFICE.

I'M GLAD I TOOK THOSE

LUNCHES OFF, AND I'M GLAD I

FINISHED MY OFFICE EARLY SO

I COULD PICK THEM UP FROM SCHOOL.

I'M GLAD I SPENT MORE TIME

WITH THEM INSTEAD OF MORE

TIME IN THE OFFICE.
