AT THE END OF THE DAY,

THEY'RE GRABBING FAST,

PROCESSED FOOD ON THE WAY

THAT'S WHEN THEY EAT AT

HOME.

TOO OFTEN THEY'RE EATING

OUT, AND THEY'RE NOT

EXERCISING.

IT IS A TECHNOLOGY.

IT'S NOT REALLY A CHOICE

THEY MADE.

JUST LIKE IN THE INDUSTRIAL

REVOLUTION, THEY DIDN'T

INTEND TO CREATE AIR

POLLUTION, BUT THEY DID.

SO THIS HAS HAPPENED, AND

HEART DISEASE DEATHS HAVE

BEEN GOING DOWN SINCE THE

1960S, BUT THIS IS THE FIRST

GENERATION WHERE OVERALL IT

IS STILL GOING DOWN, BUT IN

THESE 30 TO 45-YEAR-OLDS,

WE'RE SEEING IT PLATEAUING

WE MAY LOOK GOOD ON THE

OUTSIDE, BUT ON THE

INSIDE --

NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU HAVE

TO LOOK AT.

IT IS LIKE A FACTORY THAT IS

MAKING TOXINS?

ABSOLUTELY.

IT IS MAKING TOXINS.

AND WHEN IT IS DOING THAT,

WE SAY WE'VE MADE A LOT OF

ADVANCES IN MEDICAL SCIENCE,

BUT THE FAST FOOD, SEDENTARY

LIFE TILLIFESTYLE IS

TRUMPING OUR ADVANCES IN

MEDICAL SCIENCE.

WE TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENT

HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS, BUT

WHICHEVER ONE WE CHOOSE IS

GOING TO BE OVERWHELMED WITH

CHRONIC DISEASE IF WE DON'T

CHANGE WHAT WE'RE DOING.

THIS METABOLIC SYNDROME.

DOES THAT MEAN ANYTHING?

SURE.

THE METABOLIC SYNDROME IS

WHAT PRODUCES THE BELLY.

IT WAS A SURVIVAL MECHANISM

FOR OUR ANCESTORS, WHO WERE

OFTEN GOING THROUGH TIMES OF

FEAST AND FAMINE.

IT WAS A WAY TO STORE FAT IN

THE BELLY.

YOU COULD STILL RUN AND HUNT

AND WORK THE FARM.

IN THE WINTER, WHEN THERE

WAS FAMINE, YOU WOULD LIVE

OFF THAT FUEL RESERVE.

BUT WHEN THERE IS NO FAMINE

AND ONLY FEAST, WE'RE

BUILDING UP THE BELLY.

AND WE'RE DOING THIS

CHEMICAL BATH, WHICH IS

KILLING US TODAY.
