Cyberbullying Pushing Kids Over the Edge

An alarming number of young people are being bullied online and such mental intimidation has pushed some of these kids to commit suicide. Read Transcript

BLOSSOMING AND WORKING OUT AND

EXERCISING AND FEELING BETTER

ABOUT HERSELF.

HOWEVER THREE WEEKS BEFORE

HER 14TH BIRTHDAY PARTY, A

MESSAGE MEGAN'S MYSPACE PAGE.

NO ONE LIKES YOU AND WANTS TO

BE FRIENDS WITH YOU.

THE BULLYING EXPLODED.

MESSAGES WERE HORRENDOUS.

THEY CALLED MEGAN ALL KINDS OF

HORRIBLE NAMES TALKING ABOUT HER

WEIGHT, CURSING, USING THINGS

THAT ARE UNBELIEVABLE.

IT CAUSED MEGAN TO SOB

HYSTERICALLY AND RUN TO HER

ROOM, A SHORT TIME LATER THE

13-YEAR-OLD HUNG HERSELF IN HER

BEDROOM CLOSET.

EVERY DREAM, HOPE, EVERYTHING

SHE WANTED TO BE WAS GONE IN TWO

HOURS ON A COMPUTER AND THAT

LIFE SO PRECIOUS WAS GONE.

MEGAN TAILOR MYER BECAME A

VICTIM OF SUB CYBERBULLYING.

AN ADULT NEIGHBOR, HER DAUGHTER

WITH WHO MEGAN CREATED ACCOUNT.

ACOURT FOUND THE ADULT NEIGHBOR

GUILTY OF TAKING PART IN THE

HOAX BUT A FEDERAL JUDGE

OVERTURN IT SAYING IT WAS

UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR

AFTER MEGAN PASSED AWAY, TINA

FOUNDED AN ANTIBULLYING

FOUNDATION.

TINA HOPES TO USE THE

FOUNDATION TO SOUND THE ALARM

ABOUT THE GROWING FOUNDATION OF

CYBERBULLYING.

76 PERCENT OF YOUNG ADULTS 14-24

CALLED DIGITAL ABUSE A SERIOUS

PROBLEM.

56 PERCENT REPORT THEY HAVE

EXPERIENCED ABUSE.

14-YEAR-OLD CINDY VOLUNTEERS AND

A GROUP OF GIRLS CYBERBULLYING

HER THAT SHE STARTED CUTTING AND

CONTEMPLATED SUICIDE.

IT WAS THERE FACEBOOK, AIM

AND YOUTUBE.

THEY WOULD SAY LIKE, RUDE THINGS

OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

A FRIEND OF THE FAMILIES SAW

A DISTURBING POST ONLINE AND

NOTIFIED SYDNEY'S PARENTS.

WE HAD A LOT OF DISCUSSIONS

WITH HER.

IT IS NOT HER FAULT.

THAT IS WHAT KIDS NEED TO

UNDERSTAND.

THEY NEED TO BRING IT FORWARD

AND COME CLEAN.

ORGANIZATION ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

PARENTS NEED TO BE THE FIRST

LINE OF DEFENSE FOR THEIR

CHILDREN.

GROUP'S INTERNET SAFETY SO IS

EMPOWERS PARENTS AS WELL AS

EDUCATORS ON HOW TO DEAL WITH

CYBERBULLYING.

IT CAN GO VIRAL VERY QUICKLY.

WITH THE OLD FORM OF BULLYING,

IT MAY STAY CONTAINED.

WHEN THE TECHNOLOGY IS USED, ALL

OF A SUDDEN, SO HUNDRED OR A

THOUSAND OR A MILLION CAN SEE

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE

CHILDREN BEING BULLIED.

CHILD ADVOCATES ARE PUSHING

FOR LAWS.

SCHOOLS CAN ACTUALLY BE

LIABLE.

TINA MYER WORKED CLOSELY WITH

MISSOURI GOVERNOR TASK FORCE TO

HELP PASS A LAW TO MAKE INTERNET

HARASSMENT AND STALKING IN THAT

STATE.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE REPORTS

MORE THAN PRESIDENT OBAMA STATES

HAVE ENACTED LEGISLATION TO

PROTECT KIDS.

STATE OF MAINE COULD BE ONE OF

THE NEXT TO PASS A LAW.

LAWMAKERS ARE DIVIDED OVER ITS

IMPACT ON BASIC FREEDOMS,

ESPECIALLY FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND

RELIGION.

AS A CHRISTIAN, I AM

CONCERNED FOR CHRISTIAN KIDS

THAT MAY FEELED BULLIED.

THAT IS NOT MENTIONED.

IT IS ABOUT SEXUAL PREFERENCE

AND TRANSGENDER.

A LOT OF RED FLAGS.

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT HERE?

LOSING A LIFE OR THE LANGUAGE IN

THE BILL?

AS I SAID, THE MAIN CIVIL

LIBERTIES UNION AND I HAVE BEEN

WORKING TOGETHER.

THEY ARE SUPPORTIVE OF THE BILL.
