Twin Brothers Boost Business through 'Missioneering'

David and Jason Benham have gained success through "missioneering," a business model they say mixes engineering and pioneering ideas with missions and biblical principles. Read Transcript

Reporter: AS BUSINESS

PARTNERS, THEY COULDN'T BE A

BETTER FIT.

WE SHARED A WOMB, WE

SHARED A ROOM, AND NOW WE

SHARE AN OFFICE.

BUT THAT'S ALL WE SHARE.

Reporter: THE TRUTH IS

THE IDENTICAL TWINS SHARE

MUCH MORE, A PASSION FOR

ATHLETICS AND HEALTHY

LIVING, FOR FAMILY, FOR

THEIR CHRISTIAN FAITH, AND

FOR BUSINESS.

WHEN IT COMES TO BUSINESS,

THEY MAKE NO BONES ABOUT

THEIR LACK OF TRAINING.

WE NEVER STUDIED ANY

BUSINESS.

WE WERE NOT TRAINED BY A DAD

THAT HAD A BUSINESS.

WE WERE TRAINED TO BE

BIBLICAL THINKERS.

Reporter: THEY STARTED

A REAL ESTATE COMPANY ABOUT

THEY TODAY OPERATE IN 35

STANDPOINTS, AN35 STATES,

AND THEY SAY THAT'S JUST THE

BEGINNING.

AFTER COLLEGE, BOTH WERE

DRAFTED TO PLAY PROFESSIONAL

BASEBALL.

DAVID WENT TO THE BOSTON RED

SOX, AND JASON PLAYED FOR

THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES.

AFTER SEVERAL YEARS ON THE

FIELD, THEIR DREAM OF

PLAYING BALL TRANSFORMED

INTO SOMETHING MORE.

AND GOD USED THREE YEARS

FOR ME IN THE MINOR LEAGUES,

AND FOUR YEARS FOR MY

BROTHER, TO RESHAPE OUR

DREAMS INTO SOMETHING I

CONSIDER A LITTLE BIGGER.

Reporter: WHILE THEY

APPEARED TO BE ON THE TOP OF

THEIR GAMES, RUNNING THEIR

BUSINESS SUCCESSFUL, BUT

THEY

ACTUALLY HIT ROCK

BOTTOM.

I

WENT FROM SWINGING A

BAT IN FRONT OF THOUSANDS OF

PEOPLE ON THE MAJOR LEAGUE

ROSTERSE, TO BUSHING A BROOM

AS A JANITOR.

Reporter: DAVID LEFT

BASEBALL TO FOCUS ON HIS

FAMILY,

MOVING TO

CHARLOTTETOWN TO BE CLOSER

TO HIS BROTHER.

BUT THEY STRUGGLED TO PAY

THE BILLS.

WE WANTED TO DO REAL

ESTATE, BUT TO GET TO THAT

POINT HE HAD TO MOW LINES.

WE STAINED SOME DOORS AND

STACKED PRINTING PAPER.

Reporter: BUT FOR THE

BROTHERS, THEY BECAME A

TURNING POINT.

THAT WAS ONE OF HIS

MILESTONES, AND A TEACHING

POINT.

GOD TOOK HIM TO THE BOTTOM

AND SAID BE GOOD AT WHAT YOU

DO, NO BHATD WHAT I MATTER

WHAT YOU DO.

PRODUCE MORE VALUE THAN

YOU TAKE IN PAY, BREATHE

LIFE, FAITHFUL AND LITTLE.

WE STARTED BUILDING OUT WHAT

WE ENVISIONED A KINGDOM

BUSINESS SHOULD LOOK LIKE.

WE DIDN'T READ ANY BOOKS BY

ANYBODY.

EVERYTHING WAS FRESH.

AND GOD EXPLODED OUR VISIT

BECAUSE WE WANTED TO GLORIFY

THEM.

Reporter: RATHER THAN

TRIBUTEIN ATTRIBUTING THEIR

SUCCESS TO GOOD TIMING, THEY

BELIEVE IT IS MISSIONARING.

YOU'VE GOT PIONEERING,

AND MISSIONARING.

Reporter: YOU SEE BIBLE

MOTIVES AND OCCASIONAL

PRAYERS.

FATHER, WE THANK YOU FOR

WHAT YOU'RE DOING AROUND THE

CITY.

Reporter: ONE EXAMPLE

HOW THE BROOTD BROTHERS ARE

MAKING A MARK IN THEIR

COMMUNITY, THEY HAD AREA

PASTORS TO ORGANIZE THE

PRAYER EVENT CALL CHARLOTTE

714.

IT DREW 9,000 PEOPLE FROM

MORE THAN 700 DIFFERENT

CHURCHES.

GOD ALLOWED AN OLD,

BROKEN DOWN BUSINESS OWNER

LIKE ME TO PUT THAT CALL

OUT, AND CHURCHES FLOCKED TO

THE IDEA OF IT BECAUSE IT

WASN'T HELD BY ANY ONE

PARTICULAR CHURCH.

Reporter: THEY'RE NOW

SETTING THEIR SIGHTS

OVERSEAS.

THE GOAL: START COMPANIES

THAT PRODUCE MORE MISSION

MISSIONARS.

WE TAKE THE PROFITS AND

REINVEST THEM INTO THE CITY

AND INTO THE PEOPLE, AND

REACH OUT AND MINISTER TO

THE UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS

THROUGH FUNDS THAT ARE

DERIVED OVERSEAS.

Reporter: DAVID AND

JASON BELIEVE THEIR BUSINESS

PHILOSOPHY EXTENDS TO ALL

PEOPLE OF FAITH, TO SEE

THEIR CAREER FIELD AS THE

MISSION FIELD.

MISSIONARING TO US IS THE

OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THE

DISTINCTION BETWEEN BUSINESS

AND MINISTER AND TO

COMPLETELY ERASE IT AND SAY

YOU ARE SIMPLY COMPLETING

YOUR ASSIGNMENT.

WHETHER THAT IS RUNNING A

CHURCH, OR WHETHER THAT IS

RUNNING A BUSINESS, YOU ARE

RUNNING AN ORGANIZATION, AND

GOD WANTS YOU TO BRING THIS

KINGDOM IN THAT.

Reporter: THAT'S WHAT

THEY DESCRIBE AS THE SECRET

TO THEIR SUCCESS.
