Are You a Prisoner of Your Finances?

Larry and Melanie lived paycheck to paycheck. They felt like prisoners to money. Just when they thought they'd never get ahead, one decision changed their financial future forever. Learn what it was. Read Transcript

Reporter: JOSEPH AND

MELANIE HARDING LOVED THE

FREEDOM OF RIDING THEIR

MOTORCYCLE ON THE OPEN

ROAD.

IT REMINDS THEM OF THEIR

NEW-FOUND FINANCIAL

FREEDOM.

THE HARDINGS LIVE IN THE

HEARTLAND OF MICHIGAN.

TODAY THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL

ENTREPRENEURS, BUT THEY HAVE

KNOWN THEIR SHARE OF HARD

TIMES.

MELANIE WAS A COMPUTER

DRAFTER, AND JOSEPH WAS A

RESTAURANT COOK.

STILL, LIKE MANY AMERICANS,

THEY LIVED PAYCHECK TO

PAYCHECK.

IT IS A STRUGGLE DAY TO

DAY.

IT IS FEAR.

YOU LAY AWAKE AT NIGHT

WONDERING WHERE THAT NEXT

$10 IS GOING TO COME FROM SO

YOU CAN GET GAS TO GO TO

WORK OR FOOD TO EAT.

IT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE A

PRISONER.

IT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE

YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO GET

AHEAD.

Reporter: WITH THE

STRUGGLING ECONOMY, MELANIE

SAYS THEY HAD TO MAKE SOME

TOUGH DECISIONS.

DO I HAVE GAS IN MY CAR

TO GO TO MY FRIEND'S

BIRTHDAY PARTY OR DO I STAY

HOME SO I CAN GET GAS TO GO

TO WORK.

TWO DAYS BEFORE THE

PAYCHECK, I MAY NOT BE ABLE

TO PAY MY UTILITY BILLS, SO

I HAVE TO CHOOSE TO PAY A

LATE FEE.

Reporter: AFTER

SUFFERING A BACK INJURY,

JOSEPH HAD TO LEAVE HIS

BACK.

AS HE RECUPERATED, HE

STARTED WATCHING "THE 700

CLUB" EVERY MORNING.

THAT'S WHEN HE LEARNED ABOUT

THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING.

GIVE.

IT'S OBEDIENCE.

IT IS GIVING BACK WHAT IS

HIS, ANYWAY.

WATCHING "THE 700 CLUB"

AND HEARING THE STORIES IS

WHAT REALLY SPOKE TO HIM.

REAL PEOPLE SHARING HOW

THEIR LIVES WERE CHANGED AND

THEIR FINANCES AND

BUSINESSES WERE CHANGED FROM

TITHING.

HE GOT THAT MESSAGE FROM

CBN.

Reporter: MELANIE HAD

GROWN UP IN CHURCH AND

ALREADY NEW ABOUT TITHING,

BUT HAD BEEN INCONSISTENT.

SHE STARTED WATCHING "THE

700 CLUB" WITH JOSEPH AND

STARTED GIVING.

SHE LEFT HER JOB AND MADE A

COMMITMENT TO A HOMEMADE

BUSINESS.

AND JOSEPH STARTED SELLING

IN GARAGE SALES ON eBAY.

A LOT OF TIMES I WILL BUY

SOMETHING THAT I THINK MIGHT

BE WORTH SOMETHING, AND I

SPEND $4 OR $5, AND IT'S

WORTH $300.

IN A THREE-YEAR

TIMEFRAME, IT MULTIPLIED BY

10.

NOW IT HAS COME BACK TO US,

AND IT JUST KEEPS GROWING.

Reporter: MELANIE AND

JOSEPH LOVE GIVING TO CBN

EACH MONTH.

CBN FOLLOWS THE WORD.

WHEN I WATCH THE SHOW, I

JUST KNOW THAT GOD IS THE

CENTER OF EVERYTHING CBN

DOES.

AND SO I REALLY WANT TO

SUPPORT AN ORGANIZATION LIKE

THAT.

Reporter: JOSEPH SAYS

HE NO LONGER FEELS LIKE A

PRISONER TO HIS FINANCES.

I JUST FEEL PEACE.

EVER SINCE I'VE BEEN

TITHING, I'VE NEVER HAD TO

WORRY ABOUT BILLS.

THERE IS ALWAYS MONEY TO PAY

THE BILLS.

HE DOESN'T NEED OUR

MONEY, YOU KNOW.

IT'S FOR US.

TITHING IS FOR US, AND IT IS

AN INVESTMENT, AND IT OPENS

THE DOOR FOR US TO BE

BLESSED FINANCIALLY SO THAT

WE CAN BLESS OTHERS.
