700 Club Interactive: Confessions of a Scholarship Winner - April 26, 2013

Kristina Ellis went from living below the poverty line to graduating from Vanderbilt University. And she did it without paying a cent. Read Transcript

Gordon: COMING UP, FREE

MONEY FOR COLLEGE, AND YOU

DON'T HAVE TO BE SUPER SMART

TO EARN IT.

THEY ARE LOOKING FOR

PEOPLE WHO CAN MAKE A

DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.

Gordon: HOW ONE STUDENT

WON A HALF MILLION IN

SCHOLARSHIPS.

IF YOU'VE FACED

CHALLENGES AND YOU'VE

OVERCOME THEM, THEY WANT TO

SEE THAT.

Gordon: ON TODAY'S "700

CLUB INTERACTIVE."

ON "700 CLUB INTERACTIVE,"

WE USE TECHNOLOGY TO PRAY

FOR EACH OTHER AND EXPLORE

TOPICS THAT MATTER TO YOU.

WATCH WHAT GOD IS DOING IN

THE WORLD TODAY.

*

Gordon: WELL, WELCOME

TO THE SHOW.

AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.

WHEN IT COMES TO AN

AFFORDABLE EDUCATION, MANY

SCHOOLS ARE GETTING A

FAILING GRADE.

AMERICANS OWE OVER

$1 TRILLION IN STUDENT LOAN

DEBT, AND THAT'S MORE THAN

THEY OWE ON CREDIT CARDS.

Terry: AND THE PROBLEM

IS IT IS ONLY GET WORSE.

STUDENTS ARE NOW LOOKING FOR

CHEAPER WAYS TO GET A BETTER

DEGREE AND ARE QUICKLY

LEARNING THAT THE MOST

IMPORTANT LESSON THEY'LL GET

COMES BEFORE THEY SET FOOT

ON CAMPUS.

IT SAID, YOU CAN'T PUT A

PRICE ON HIGHER EDUCATION,

BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER

IS, IT AIN'T CHEAP.

THESE DAYS TUITION FOR A

TWO-YEAR COLLEGE IS 16

GRAND, AND THE GROWING RATE

FOR AN ELITE COLLEGE CAN

TOTAL MORE THAN $50,000 A

YEAR.

MEANING IF YOU WANT TO PAY

YOUR TUITION, YOU HAVE THREE

OPTIONS: GO INTO DEBT,

MORTGAGE YOUR HOUSE, OR WIN

THE LOTTERY.

SO IT IS NO WONDER THAT

PARENTS DREAD THE DAY THAT

THEIR KIDS START APPLYING

FOR COLLEGE, AND FOR

FAMILIES STILL PAYING ON

BRACES, CAR INSURANCE AND

CELL PHONE BILLS, THE IDEA

OF HIGHER EDUCATION IS

USUALLY JUST A DREAM.

BUT CHRISTINA ELLIS PROVED

IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE.

CHRISTINA CAME UP WITH A

PLAN TO CHANGE HER LIFE.

SHE WENT FROM A

SINGLE-PARENT HOME, LIVING

IN POVERTY, TO GRADUATING

FROM VANDERBILT AND

VALEMOUNT UNIVERSITY, AND

SHE DID IT ALL ON HER OWN

WITHOUT ANY DEBT.

Terry: UNBELIEVABLE,

AND CHRISTINA ELLIS IS HERE

WITH US NOW.

WELCOME.

IT IS GOOD TO HAVE YOU WITH

US.

THANK YOU.

Terry: YOU'RE A

VANDERBILT GRADUATE, AND SHE

LATER EARNED HER MASTERS

FROM BELLMONT, AND DID IT

ALL WITHOUT ACCRUING DEBT.

WELCOME TO "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE."

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

Terry: LET'S START WITH

YOUR FIRST DAY OF HIGH

SCHOOL BECAUSE YOUR MOM SAID

SOMETHING TO YOU THAT

CHANGED THE COURSE OF YOUR

LIFE?

ABSOLUTELY.

SHE SAT ME DOWN AND

BASICALLY SAID, I LOVE YOU,

I BELIEVE IN YOU, BUT THERE

IS NO WAY I CAN SUPPORT YOU

FINANCIALLY ONCE YOU

GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL.

YOU NEED TO START THINKING

ABOUT HOW YOU'RE GOING TO

PAY FOR COLLEGE.

EVEN THOUGH THAT WAS REALLY,

REALLY HARD TO CHOKE DOWN,

IT IS ONE THE BEST GIFTS SHE

HAD EVER GIVEN ME

BECAUSE --

Terry: DID YOU HAVE ANY

THOUGHT OF THAT PRIOR TO

THAT CONVERSATION WITH YOUR

MOM?

I DIDN'T REALLY.

I MEAN AT THAT POINT IN

LIFE, COLLEGE SEEMED SO FAR

AWAY.

I THOUGHT, WHY DO I NEED TO

START PAYING FOR IT NOW.

BUT SCHOLARSHIPS LOOK AT

YOUR ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL

EXPERIENCE.

SO STARTING YOUR FRESHMAN

YEAR IS THE PERFECT TIME TO

START.

Terry: AND YOUR MOTHER

WASN'T JUST SAYING THAT TO

BE STERN.

YOU WERE, AS A FAMILY, IN A

SITUATION WHERE SHE COULDN'T

HELP YOU FINANCIALLY.

TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR

LIFE GROWING UP.

Reporter: WHEN I WAS

THREE YEARS OLD, MY MOM WAS

WOKEN UP TO MY DAD

CONVULSING IN A BED WITH

SEIZURES.

AND HE WAS RUSHED TO THE

HOSPITAL AND DIAGNOSED WITH

BRAIN CANCER.

THAT STARTED A JOURNEY NO

FAMILY EVER WANTS TO TAKE OR

PLANS ON.

WHEN I WAS SEVEN,

UNFORTUNATELY, WE LOST HIM

TO CANCER, WHICH WAS JUST

DEVASTATING, AND AFTERWARDS,

WE FELL BELOW POVERTY LINE

AND REALLY STRUGGLED

EMOTIONALLYLY.

EMOTIONALLY.

I STARTED DEALING WITH

SELF-ESTEEM PROBLEMS, AND I

WENT THREE ANOREXIA AND

CUTTING, AND I ACTUALLY

REACHED A SPOT WHERE I

WANTED TO END MY OWN LIFE.

IN THAT DARK MOMENT, THE

MOMENT I ALMOST TOOK MY OWN

LIFE, I SAID, I'M SORRY,

GOD, I CAN'T DO THIS

ANYMORE.

AND JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO

DO IT, I GOT A PHONE CALL,

IN THE MIDDLE OF A NIGHT, ON

A SCHOOL NIGHT, FROM MY AUNT

TANYA.

Terry: IT WAS AN

INTERVENTION BY THE LORD?

ABSOLUTELY.

SUCH A BLESSING.

SHE DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING

PROFOUND OR ANYTHING THAT

NECESSARILY BACKED ME OFF

THE EDGE.

SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT

WAS GOING ON.

BUT IN THAT MOMENT SHE SAID

EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO

HEAR TO REMIND ME THAT LIFE

WAS WORTH LIVING AND I

WANTED TO KEEP GOING.

THE NEXT DAY I REALIZED I

CAN'T LET MYSELF GET THAT

DARK AGAIN.

I NEED TO EITHER START

PUSHING FORWARD FOR A BETTER

LIFE AND A BETTER FUTURE, OR

IT IS JUST NOT GOING TO

WORK.

AND THAT LAID THE FOUNDATION

FOR ME MOVING ON.

Terry: YOU MENTIONED

THAT YOU HAD SELF-ESTEEM

ISSUES.

I KNOW THAT A BIG PART OF

DOING WELL IN APPLYING FOR

SCHOLARSHIPS IS FIGURING OUT

HOW YOU STAND OUT IN THE

CROWD, HOW TO PROJECT WHO

YOU ARE TO THE

DECISION-MAKERS.

HOW DID YOU GET FROM THE

PLACE YOU JUST DESCRIBED,

AND THE LOW SELF-ESTEEM OF

THAT, TO STANDING OUT IN A

WAY THAT MADE THEM SAY YES

TO YOU.

ABSOLUTELY.

I STARTED BELIEVING IN MY

OWN POTENTIAL.

I STARTED LOOKING AT THE

FUTURE AND REALIZING IF I

STARTED WORKING HARD, I

COULD BECOME AN IDEAL

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT.

AND SCHOLARSHIP PEOPLE

AREN'T JUST LOOKING FOR

PERFECT PEOPLE.

THEY'RE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE

WHO CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

AND GO ON AND MAKE AN

IMPACT.

AND I THOUGHT, I CAN DO

THAT.

Terry: WHEN YOU TALK

ABOUT BELIEVING IN YOURSELF

AND YOUR OWN POTENTIAL,

WHERE DID THAT START FOR

YOU?

I MEAN, WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE

CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF --

I'M SURE THERE ARE PEOPLE

WHO ARE WATCHING RIGHT NOW

AND SAYING, WHERE DO YOU

START THAT JOURNEY?

HOW DID YOU TURN IT AROUND?

ABSOLUTELY.

MY MOM WAS A HUGE INFLUENCE

FOR ME.

EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T HAVE A

LOT OF MONEY, ON THOUGH WE

WERE REALLY STRUGGLING, SHE

SAW SOMETHING IN ME FROM A

REALLY EARLY AGE, AND SHE

SPOKE TO THAT CONSTANTLY.

SHE SAID, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO

STAY IN THAT POINT IN LIFE.

WINNING A JUNIOR OLYMPIC

GOLD MEDAL OR WINNING MISS

INDIANA TEEN U.S.A., MY MOM

WOULD TALK TO ME AS IF I

ALREADY HAD WON IT.

SHE HAD NO DOUBT IN HER MIND

I COULD BECOME SOMETHING

MORE.

SO SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH

PEOPLE WHO SPEAK TO THE LIFE

IS IMPORTANT.

Terry: WHAT ELSE IS

IMPORTANT?

BECAUSE IT IS NOT ANY ONE

THING, BUT IT IS SORT OF A

COMBINATION OF ALL OF THE

RIGHT THINGS.

WHAT ARE THE RIGHT THINGS TO

ACCRUE IN YOUR LIFE AND PUT

ON YOUR APPLICATION, AND YOU

CAN'T JUST TALK ABOUT IT.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE DONE IT.

ABSOLUTELY.

BE WILLING TO PUT IN SOME

HARD WORK.

TO WIN SCHOLARSHIPS, IT

TAKES PUTTING EFFORT IN.

SCHOLARSHIP JUDGES LOVE TO

SEE COMMITMENT.

WHETHER IT IS SPORTS OR

VOLUNTEER WORKS OR ACADEMIC

CLUB OR TEAM.

GET INVOLVED IN THINGS THAT

YOU ENJOY.

AND ALSO LEADERSHIP IS A

GREAT THING.

IF YOU CAN FIND THINGS THAT

YOU ENJOY, AND START TO

RALLY PEOPLE AROUND AND LEAD

THEM THROUGH IT, THAT IS

DEFINITELY THAT HELPS STAND

OUT.

Terry: SO LOOKING FOR

THOSE KIND OF LEADERSHIP OR

EXCELLING QUALITIES WITHIN

THE THINGS THAT YOU'RE DOING

GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO WRITE

ON THE APPLICATION.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY'RE

LOOKING FOR?

YOU TALK ABOUT NEEDING TO

TELL YOUR STORY AS WELL.

HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

AND HOW DOES THAT WORK INTO

THE WHOLE THING?

WELL, MOST SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATIONS HAVE ESSAYS.

THAT GIVES YOU THE

OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH

THE JUDGES A LITTLE BIT

ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AS A

PERSON, AND LET THEM SEE

YOUR CHARACTER.

AND IT'S GREAT TO LIST YOUR

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND YOUR

ACHIEVEMENTS, AND THEY LOVE

TO SEE THAT, BUT AT THE SAME

TIME, THEY WANT TO HAVE

SOMETHING THAT STANDS OUT IN

THEIR MIND, AND HELPS YOU

JUST BE REMEMBERED.

Terry: REMEMBERED.

EXACTLY.

ABSOLUTELY.

SO SHARING A LITTLE DEEPER

LEVEL, EVEN IF YOU HAVE

FACED CHALLENGES AND YOU'VE

OVERCOME THEM, THEY WANT TO

SEE THAT.

Terry: YEAH.

AND TELL ME A LITTLE BIT

ABOUT THE STRESS OF ALL OF

THIS, AND HOW YOU HANDLED

IT, AND WHAT YOU ACTUALLY

ACHIEVED?

YEAH, WELL, I ACTUALLY --

I STARTED LOOKING AT THE

SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS LIKE MY

JOB.

AND MY MOM SAID

ANOTHER, QUOTE,"THE

DECISIONS YOU MAKE RIGHT NOW

WILL IMPACT THE REST OF YOUR

LIFE."

AND IT REALLY DID.

JUST TAKING SIX MONTHS MY

SENIOR YEAR AND FILLING OUT

TONS AND TONS OF

APPLICATIONS REALLY PAID

OFF.

$500,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS IN

SIX MONTHS.

SO TAKING THAT TIME TO

DEVOTE TO THE PROCESS, AND

REALIZING HOW MUCH IT CAN

PAY OFF.

YES, IT CAN BE A LITTLE

FRUSTRATING SPENDING THAT

TIME IN THE LIBRARY --

Terry: IS THAT WHERE

YOU GOT MOST OF YOUR

INFORMATION?

YOU JUST RESEARCHED WHAT WAS

OUT THERE?

I DID.

I DIDN'T HAVE A PERFECT

ROADMAP, WHICH IS WHY I

WROTE MY BOOK, TO GIVE

STUDENTS AN EASIER WAY TO

TRY TO FIGURE IT OUT.

I SPENT HOURS READING EVERY

BOOK I COULD FIND,

RESEARCHING EVERY ARTICLE,

CALLING SCHOLARSHIP

PROGRAMS, AND TRYING TO FIND

ANY INFORMATION I COULD.

Terry: YOU'VE WRITTEN A

BOOK, BUT WHAT IS AHEAD FOR

YOU?

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH

YOUR LIFE?

I'M SO PASSIONATE ABOUT

EDUCATION AND HELPING

STUDENTS FIGURE OUT HOW TO

PAY FOR COLLEGE, THAT RIGHT

NOW THAT IS MY FOCUS.

HELPING STUDENTS FIND WAYS

TO AFFORD COLLEGE.

Terry: YOU'VE COME TO

THE TABLE AT THE RIGHT

TIME.

WE'RE HEARING ALMOST DAILY

ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF DEBT

YOUNG PEOPLE ARE INCURRING

GETTING AN EDUCATION.

CHECK OUT CHRISTINA'S BOOK,

CALLED "CONFESSIONS OF A

SCHOLARSHIP WINNER," AND IT

IS AVAILABLE WHEREVER BOOKS

ARE SOLD, NATIONWIDE, AND IT

IS FILLED WITH WONDERFUL

INFORMATION TO HELP YOU AND

HELP YOUR CHILDREN.

YOU NEED TO KNOW THERE IS A

WAY TO DO THIS, AND SHE IS

THE GIRL WHO HAS GOT THE

INFO.

CONGRATULATIONS.

WHAT A WONDERFUL

ACCOMPLISHMENT.

THANK YOU.

Gordon: COMING UP, A

CONTROVERSIAL NEW WAY THAT

PARENTS ARE TRYING TO GIVE

THEIR CHILDREN AN ADVANTAGE

IN SCHOOL.

FIND OUT WHAT IT IS.

THAT'S UP NEXT.

Gordon: COLLEGE SPORTS

FANS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE

TERM "RED SHIRTING."

WHICH IS USED TO DESCRIBE AN

ATHLETE, WHO WILL SIT OUT

FOR A YEAR, GIVING HIM TIME

TO GROW BEFORE STEPPING FOOT

ON THE PLAYING FIELD.

NOW IT IS NOT JUST COLLEGE

ATHLETES WHO ARE

RED-SHIRTING.

AN INCREASING NUMBER OF

PARENTS ARE HOLDING THEIR

CHILDREN BACK FROM

KINDERGARTEN.

CHARLENE ISRAEL EXPLAINS.

EDUCATION IS LIKE

BUILDING A HOUSE.

AND IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE

PROPER FOUNDATION, WHATEVER

YOU PUT ON TOP OF IT IS

GOING TO CRUMBLE.

Reporter: KINDERGARTEN

CAN BE HARD ENOUGH.

THEY'RE DEALING WITH

BUSES, WITH NEW TEACHERS, WE

GOING INTO A LUNCH ROOM.

Reporter: KINDERGARTEN

CAN BE EVEN HARDER FOR

YOUNGER CHILDREN.

THERE IS EVIDENCE-BASED

MEDICINE THAT SHOWS THAT

CHILDREN'S BRAINS JUST

AREN'T READY TO DO THAT AT

SUCH A YOUNG AGE.

Reporter: THAT'S WHY

SOME PARENTS ARE TAKING

DRASTIC STEPS TO HELP THEIR

KIDS DEAL WITH THE PRESSURES

OF EARLY LIFE.

RED-SHIRTING.

RED-SHIRTING.

RED-SHIRTING IS BASICALLY

HOLDING YOUR CHILD BACK A

YEAR SO THAT THEY CAN START

KINDERGARTEN AT A BETTER

ADVANTAGE.

Reporter: RED-SHIRTING

WORKS LIKE THIS: MOST SCHOOL

DISTRICTS HAVE A CUTOFF DATE

WHEN IT COMES TO ENROLLING A

CHILD IN KINDERGARTEN.

THOSE BORN AFTER THE CUTOFF

HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR.

DURING THAT YEAR, THE CHILD

GROWS OLDER AND MORE

DEVELOPED.

THAT'S GREAT NEWS FOR THEM.

NOT SO GREAT FOR THOSE WHO

SLID INTO SCHOOL JUST BEFORE

THE CUTOFF DATE.

MY SON, WHEN HE WAS HERE

IN THE KINDERGARTEN CLASS,

HE WAS BEHIND IN READING.

AND HE RECOGNIZED THE FACT

THAT HE WAS BEHIND.

HE WOULD COME HOME AND SAY,

MOM, I'M NOT READING LIKE

THE OTHER KIDS ARE.

AND I THINK THAT HURT HIS

SELF-ESTEEM A LITTLE BIT.

THAT'S WHEN I DECIDED, I'M

NOT GOING TO FORCE THIS.

Reporter: AND SHE'S NOT

ALONE.

SOME STATISTICS ESTIMATE

THAT KINDERGARTEN

RED-SHIRTING HAS TRIPLED

SINCE THE 1970s.

FOR ME, IT WAS A REALLY

HARD DECISION.

MY YOUNGEST SON, HE IS THE

BABY, BY FAR.

THERE ARE MANY YEARS BETWEEN

HE AND HIS OLDER SIBLINGS,

AND EVEN THOUGH HE WAS

REALLY SMART MATURITY-WISE,

AND SOCIALLY HE WAS JUST

BEHIND.

Reporter: IN A

KINDERGARTEN CLASS, THE

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHILD

WHO IS ALMOST SIX, VERSUS A

CHILD WHO JUST TURNED FIVE,

CAN BE STAGGERING.

SOME KIDS ARE ABLE TO READ

AND WRITE.

OTHERS ARE JUST LEARNING HOW

TO SIT STILL.

I KNEW THERE WAS NO WAY

THAT AT FIVE HE WAS GOING TO

BE ABLE TO GO INTO A NORMAL

KINDERGARTEN SETTING, BE

ABLE TO SIT FOR THREE HOURS,

AND JUST WITH NO PROBLEM AND

BE ABLE TO DO THE WORK AND

WORK INDEPENDENTLY, WITHOUT

ANY KIND OF ISSUES.

Reporter: THERE IS

ANOTHER SIDE TO IT: KIND

KINDERGARTEN IS BECOMING

INCREASINGLY ACADEMIC, AND

SOME KIDS ARE FALLING

BEHIND.

KIDS ARE EXPECTED, GOING

INTO KINDERGARTEN, TO KNOW

ALL OF THEIR LETTERS, ALL

THEIR NUMBERS, EVEN HOW TO

READ SOME, HOW TO WRITE.

THESE ARE THINGS THAT MOST

OF US WEREN'T TAUGHT UNTIL

KINDERGARTEN OR FIRST

GRADE.

WHEN I WENT TO KINDERGARTEN,

THEY WERE HOPING WE WOULDN'T

SPILL OUR FINGER PAINTS AND

THEY WERE HOPING WE COULD

GET ALONG WITH OUR

CLASSMATES.

Reporter: AND THE

PROBLEMS ONLY GUESS WORSE AS

THE CHILD GETS OLDER.

I DIDN'T WANT TO START

HIM OFF BEHIND, BECAUSE IF

YOU SCREW THEM UP RIGHT OUT

OF THE GATE, THERE IS NO

TELLING IF THEY CAN REBOUND

FROM THAT.

IF THEY'RE FEELING YOUNGER,

IF THEY'RE NOT FEELING

SECURE ABOUT THEMSELVES, OR

DEVELOPMENTALLY THEY JUST

WEREN'T THERE YET, I SEE A

SNOWBALL OF UGLY HAPPENING

TO THEM.

Reporter: BUT NOT

EVERYONE AGREES ABOUT THE

BENEFITS OF RED-SHIRTING.

NONE FOUND NO BENEFITS.

ANOTHER GROUP ADVISES

AGAINST IT, SAYING IT ASKS

EXACERBATES AGAINST IT.

AND OTHERS FROM A LOWER

INCOME HOUSEHOLD MAY NOT BE

ABLE TO KEEP THEIR KIDS HOME

A YEAR.

AND SOME SAY KIDS SHOULD BE

STARTING SCHOOL AS EARLY AS

THREE, NOT SIX.

BUT THAT IS NOT STOPPING

SOME PARENTS, WHO KNOWS WHAT

IS BEST FOR THEIR KIDS.

TO ME, CHRONOLOGICAL AGE

DOESN'T ALWAYS MATCH WHERE A

KID IS IN THEIR LEARNING OR

DEVELOPMENT.

Reporter: SO A NEW CROP

OF SCHOOLS IS EMERGING, ONE

THAT IS BEING CALLED

KINDERGARTEN PREP.

WHICH IS KIND OF A

MODIFIED PRE-SCHOOL.

DIFFERENT IN COMPACT.

MAYBE MORE DIDACTIC WORK,

AND MAYBE MORE LEARNING THAN

PLAY AND LEARNING COMBINED.

Reporter: SO IF YOU'RE

A PARENT WANTING TO GIVE

YOUR CHILD A LEG UP ON

LEARNING OR JUST STARTING

SCHOOL, JUST KNOW THAT THE

DEBATE WAS THERE.

I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS THE

RIGHT CHOICE FOR EVERYBODY,

BUT IT WAS RIGHT FOR US.

LIFE IS NOT FAIR, AND YOU

HAVE TO MAKE THE BEST

CHOICES THAT YOU CAN WITH

THE INFORMATION YOU HAVE AT

THE TIME.

I WOULD LOVE TO PRETEND

BECAUSE I HELD MY CHILD BACK

A YEAR, NOW HIS CHILDHOOD IS

GOING TO BE UNICORNS AND

RAINBOWS, BUT WE ALL KNOW

THAT THAT'S -- I FEEL LIKE

HAVE I GIVEN HIM AN

ADVANTAGE AS FAR AS HIS OWN

PERSONAL GROWTH?

ABSOLUTELY, I DO.

DO I THINK THAT THIS IS

RIGHT FOR EVERY CHILD?

NO.

NO.

BECAUSE WE'RE ALL -- WE ALL

DEVELOP DIFFERENTLY.

Reporter: CHARLENE

ISRAEL, CBN NEWS.

Gordon: TERRY, WHAT DO

YOU THINK ABOUT THIS?

DO YOU THINK IT IS A SMART

IDEA?

Terry: I ACTUALLY DID

THIS WITH MY TWO OLDEST KIDS

BECAUSE IT WAS A PROGRAM

HERE AT CBN THAT INFLUENCED

ME.

I WASN'T EVEN WORKING HERE

AT THE TIME.

YOU HAD A PROGRAMME CALLED,

"SING, SPELL, READ AND

WRITE."

AND I SPOKE TO THE WOMAN WHO

DEVELOPED THAT, AND SHE

UNEQUIVOCALLY SUGGESTED

THIS, MY OLDEST CHILD WAS A

SON, SECOND TO A DAUGHTER,

AND I RED-SHIRTED BOTH OF

THEM.

I JUST HAD THEM REPEAT

KINDERGARTEN.

BOYS, THEY SAY, DEVELOP

LATER THAN GIRLS, AND I

DIDN'T WANT HIM TO BE THE

BABY OF THE GIRL.

MY DAUGHTER, WE ENDED UP

BUMPING UP A CLASS LATER

BECAUSE SHE WAS AHEAD OF THE

CLASS.

I THINK IT BENEFITED BOTH OF

THEM.

IT GAVE THEM SOME SPACE TO

GROW WITHOUT HEAVY

EXPECTATION AT AN EARLY

AGE.

SO I'M FOR IT.

Gordon: I WOULD BE ALL

FOR IT BECAUSE, NUMBER ONE,

I THINK IT WOULD REDUCE THE

EXPOSURE TO BULLYING.

IF YOU'RE ONE OF THE OLDEST

IN THE CLASS, THEN YOU'RE

GOING TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A

LEADER BY THE OTHER STUDENTS

AND BY THE TEACHER.

AND THERE WILL JUST BE AN

ADVANTAGE FOR YOU GOING

FORWARD THAT WILL BE

TREMENDOUS.

AND REALLY HELP SHAPE A

CHARACTER FOR LIFE SUCCESS.

SO OFTEN WE THINK OF SCHOOL

IN TERMS OF ACADEMICS, AND

ARE YOU SMART ENOUGH, AND DO

YOU KNOW YOUR NUMBERS AND

LETTERS AND ALL OF THAT KIND

OF STUFF.

BUT THERE ARE REAL LIFE

LESSONS THAT YOU NEED TO

LEARN THAT ARE MORE

DETERMINATIVE OF SUCCESS IN

LIFE THAN ACADEMICS.

Terry: I SAW THIS IN

BOTH OF MY CHILDREN LATER ON

BECAUSE YOU DON'T THINK OF

THINGS LIKE THIS WHEN YOU'RE

TALKING ABOUT ACADEMICS, BUT

DRIVING, DO YOU REALLY WANT

YOUR CHILD TO BE DRIVING A

YEAR EARLIER THAN THEY NEED

TO BE, AND THERE IS PRESSURE

TO DO THAT WHEN THEIR

FRIENDS ARE ALL DRIVING.

BOTH OF MY KIDS THAT

REGISTERED IN KINDERGARTEN

HAVE BEEN VERY MUCH LEADERS,

VERY INDEPENDENT THINKERS.

SO I THINK THERE ARE THOSE

UNDERLYING THINGS THAT

SOLIDIFY A CHANGE IN THEIR

LIVES.

IT IS GOOD.

COMING UP, AN INNER CITY

MENTOR DISCOVERS A GREAT WAY

TO TEACH YOUNG KIDS.

HIS SECRET IS NEXT.

Terry: IN CLASSROOMS

AROUND THE WORLD, CHILDREN

ARE STUDYING MATH AND

SCIENCE, BUT ONE GIRL IN

NICARAGUA SPENDS HER DAYS AT

SCHOOL THINKING ABOUT

SOMETHING ELSE.

TAKE A LOOK.

9-YEAR-OLD ARELLIS HAD A

SERIOUS PROBLEM FOCUS, AND

EVEN LEARNING IN SCHOOL,

SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE WAS

HUNGRY.

BEING HUNGRY IS AWFUL.

I HAD PAIN IN MY STOMACH.

Reporter: HER FATHER

HAD BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR

MONTHS.

HER MOTHER GOT UP AT DAWN TO

MAKE BREAD TO SELL.

THAT BROUGHT IN ENOUGH TO

GIVE THE FAMILY ONLY ONE

MEAL A DAY.

THAT MEANT MOST NIGHTS

ARRELLIS WENT TO BED

HUNGRY.

I WOULD FALL ASLEEP, AND

DREAM THAT MY MOM BROUGHT ME

A PIECE OF CHICKEN AND

SALAD.

BUT WHEN I WOKE UP, IT WAS

JUST A DREAM.

Reporter: ONE MORNING

ARRELLIS WENT TO CHURCH WITH

HER MOTHER AND SISTER AND

HEARD ABOUT A NEW PROGRAM TO

A LOCAL ORPHANAGE THAT IS

SUPPORTED BY CBN'S "ORPHANS' PROMISE."

THE PROGRAM PROVIDES FOOD

FOR THE CHILDREN, AND EVEN

TEACHES THEM ENGLISH.

HELLO, EVERYBODY.

MY NAM IE ARRELLIS.

Reporter: AFTER JUST A

FEW WEEKS AT THE CENTER,

ARRELLIS WAS LIKE A

DIFFERENT CHILD.

AND SINCE "ORPHANS' PROMISE"

HAS BEEN PROVIDING THOSE TWO

EXTRA MEALS A DAY, SHE IS NO

LONGER HUNGRY, AND IS DOING

MUCH BETTER IN SCHOOL.

I WANT TO THANK YOU,

"ORPHANS' PROMISE," BECAUSE

YOU HELPED ME SO MUCH.

THANK YOU.

Terry: YOU KNOW, WE'VE

BEEN SPENDING A LOT OF TIME

ON OUR PROGRAM TODAY TALKING

ABOUT EDUCATION, LEARNING,

DEVELOPMENT.

HOW CAN CHILDREN GROW AND

LEARN IF THEY'RE HUNGRY ALL

THE TIME, NEVER GETTING

ENOUGH NOURISHMENT.

WE'RE HELPING KIDS GO TO

SCHOOL, AND WHILE THEY'RE AT

SCHOOL, GET A NUTRITIOUS

MEAL.

THAT GIVES RELIEF TO THEIR

PARENTS SO THE CHILDREN

DON'T NEED TO BE PUT IN

ORPHANAGES BECAUSE OF

POVERTY.

YEAR HELPINYOU'RE HELPING

US DO THAT IF YOU'RE A "700

CLUB" MEMBER.

THANK YOU.

LET'S LINK ARMS TOGETHER AND

MAKE IT HAPPEN IN THE NAME

OF JESUS.

TO JOIN "THE 700 CLUB," IT

IS 65 CENTS A DAY, $20 A

MONTH.

IT WILL TOUCH YOUR LIFE.

THERE IS THE TOLL-FREE

Gordon: ANDREAS AND

ALIAH ARE GREAT CHILDREN.

AND THEY HAVE A GREAT

MENTOR.

HE LIKES TO PLAY WITH THEM

AND TEACH THEM ABOUT THE

BIBLE AT THE SAME TIME.

Reporter: RONALD

MAYFIELD HAS BEEN

VOLUNTEERING TO TEACH INNER

CITY KIDS FOR MORE THAN 12

YEARS.

I'M NOT IN THE FAMILY,

BUT I'M PART OF THE FAMILY.

I WOULD CONSIDER MYSELF TO

BE A MENTOR TO THEM BECAUSE

I LIKE TO TEACH THEM

THINGS.

Reporter: HIS FAVORITE

THING TO TEACH?

STORIES FROM THE BIBLE.

SO WHEN RONALD LEARNED ABOUT

THE NEW AND IMPROVED

"SUPERBOOK" ON "THE 700

CLUB," HE GRABBED THE

D.V.D.s AS SOON AS HE

COULD TO SHARE WITH THEM.

HE BELIEVES THEY'RE LEARNING

LESSONS THEY'LL NEVER

FORGET.

THEY ENJOY LEARNING ABOUT

JESUS.

THEY WANTED TO HEAR MORE

ABOUT IT ON THEIR LEVEL,

WHICH MADE IT MORE

INTERESTING TO THEM.

Reporter: ANDREAS

LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THE

CREATION EPISODE, HE WROTE A

LETTER TO "THE 700 CLUB."

HERE IS WHAT IT HAD TO SAY:

THIS EPISODE OF

"SUPERBOOK" WAS VERY GOOD.

I LIKE THE PART WHEN MICHAEL

PUSHED SATAN AND FELL OFF

THE ROCK.

AND ALIAH LOVES THE

"SUPERBOOK" TRADING CARDS

THAT COME WITH EACH VIDEO.

THE BIBLE STORIES ARE JUST

PART OF "SUPERBOOK'S"

APPEAL.

THEY'RE CREATED WITH THE

LATEST IN ANIMATION

TECHNOLOGY, SURE TO CAPTURE

THE ATTENTION OF THIS

GENERATION'S KIDS.

I WOULD RECOMMEND IT FOR

FAMILIES, FOR MOTHERS,

PARENTS, OKAY, SINGLE

PARENTS, TO GET "SUPERBOOK"

FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR WHEN

ANOTHER "SUPERBOOK" COMES

OUT, SO I CAN WATCH IT AND

LEARN SOME MORE ABOUT THE

BIBLE.

Gordon: FROM THE MOUTH

OF BABES, "I CAN'T WAIT TO

GET ANOTHER COPY OF

"SUPERBOOK," FOR ANOTHER

EPISODE TO COME OUT SO I CAN

LEARN ABOUT THE BIBLE."

WE WANT TO MAKE BIBLE

LEARNING FUN.

AND WE'VE DONE IT WITH THESE

WONDERFUL CARTOONS,

"SUPERBOOK."

WHAT WE'RE ASKING YOU TO DO

IS WILL YOU HELP?

ONE, JUST GO TO cbn.com,

AND THERE IS A PLACE WHERE

YOU CAN ORDER THE BACK

EPISODES.

WELL, THIS IS "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE," WHERE WE

INTERACT WITH YOU.

SO LET'S GO OVER TO DIMITRI

IN THE CHATROOM.

MORGAN IS ASKING FOR

DIRECTIONS.

SHE SAYS, "I'M IN COLLEGE

NOW, BUT I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT

TO DO.

I NEVER FELT LIKE TO DO ONE

THING.

I JUST KNOW I WANT TO DO

SOMETHING IMPORTANT.

I'VE PRAYED, BUT I'VE HEARD

NOTHING.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING?"

Gordon: IT MAY NOT BE

TIME.

FOR ME, I DIDN'T REALLY

DISCOVER WHAT I WANTED TO DO

WITH LIFE UNTIL I WAS 35

YEARS OLD.

ALONG THE WAY, I HAD GOALS,

AND ONE OF THE GOALS WAS TO

GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE, AND

THEN I WANTED TO GO TO LAW

SCHOOL.

AND THEN I SAID, I'VE GOT TO

PRACTICE LAW.

AND THEN I FIGURED OUT,

WELL, I DON'T LIKE THIS.

AND SO I HAD TO RADICALLY

CHANGE AND GO INTO

MINISTRY.

IN COLLEGE, TRY TO FIND WHAT

YOU DO LIKE.

AND IT'S A WONDERFUL TIME

WHERE YOU CAN EXPLORE.

AND SO TAKE THE TIME TO DO

THAT.

WHEN YOU FIND OUT WHAT YOU

LIKE, NOT SOME CAREER OR

THAT KIND OF THING, BUT WHAT

YOU LIKE TO DO, IT'S A GREAT

BLESSING AND IT WILL BLESS

YOU FOR YOUR LIFE.

WE LEAVE YOU WITH THESE

WORDS FROM PROVERBS: "FOR

THE LORD GIVES WISDOM.

FROM HIS MOUTH COME

KNOWLEDGE AND

UNDERSTANDING."
