700 Club Interactive: Confessions of a Scholarship Winner - August 16, 2013

Kristina Ellis went from living below the poverty line to graduating from Vanderbilt University. And she did it without paying a cent. Read Transcript

Gordon: COMING UP, FREE

MONEY FOR COLLEGE, AND YOU

DON'T HAVE TO BE SUPER SMART

TO EARN IT.

THEY'RE LOOKING FOR

PEOPLE WHO CAN MAKE A

DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.

Gordon: HOW ONE STUDENT

WON A HALF MILLION IN

SCHOLARSHIPS.

IF YOU FACE CHALLENGES

AND YOU'VE OVERCOME THEM,

THEY WANT TO SEE THAT.

Gordon: ON TODAY'S "700

CLUB INTERACTIVE."

ON "700 CLUB INTERACTIVE,"

WE USE TECHNOLOGY TO PRAY

FOR EACH OTHER AND EXPLORE

TOPICS THAT MATTER TO YOU.

WATCH WHAT GOD IS DOING IN

THE WORLD TODAY.

Gordon: WELL, WELCOME

TO THE SHOW, AND THANKS FOR

JOINING US.

WHEN IT COMES TO AN

AFFORDABLE EDUCATION, MANY

SCHOOLS ARE GETTING A

FAILING GRADE.

AMERICANS OWE OVER

$1 TRILLION IN STUDENT LOAN

DEBT, AND THAT'S MORE THAN

THEY OWE ON CREDIT CARDS.

Terry: AND THE PROBLEM

IS, IT IS ONLY GETTING

WORSE.

STUDENTS ARE NOW LOOKING FOR

CHEAPER WAYS TO GET A BETTER

DEGREE, AND ARE QUICKLY

LEARNING THE MOST IMPORTANT

LESSON THEY'LL GET COMES

BEFORE THEY STEP FOOT ON

CAMPUS.

IT IS SAID, YOU CAN'T PUT

A PRICE ON HIGHER EDUCATION,

BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER

IS, IT AIN'T CHEAP.

THESE DAYS, TUITION FOR A

TWO-YEAR COLLEGE RUNS ABOUT

$16,000.

AND THE GROWING RATE FOR AN

ELITE COLLEGE CAN TOTAL MORE

THAN $50,000 A YEAR.

MEANING IF YOU WANT TO PAY

YOUR TUITION, YOU HAVE THREE

OPTIONS: GO INTO DEBT,

MORTGAGE YOUR HOUSE, OR WIN

THE LOTTERY.

SO IT IS NO WONDER THAT

PARENTS DREAD THE DAY THEIR

KIDS START APPLYING FOR

COLLEGE.

AND FOR FAMILIES STILL

PAYING FOR BRACES, CAR

INSURANCE, AND CELL PHONE

BILLS, THE IDEA OF HIGHER

EDUCATION IS USUALLY JUST A

DREAM.

BUT CHRISTINA ELLIS PROVED

IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE.

CHRISTINA CAME UP WITH A

PLAN TO CHANGE HER LIFE.

SHE WENT FROM A

SINGLE-PARENT HOME, LIVING

IN POVERTY, TO GRADUATING

FROM VANDERBILT AND BELMONT

UNIVERSITY, AND SHE DID IT

ALL ON HER OWN WITHOUT ANY

DEBT.

Terry: UNBELIEVABLE.

AND CHRISTINA ELLIS IS HERE

WITH US NOW.

WELCOME.

IT IS GOOD TO HAVE YOU HERE

WITH US.

I WANT TO TELL FOLKS YOU ARE

A VANDERBILT GRADUATE, AND

EARNED HER MASTERS FROM

BELMONT, AND DID IT ALL

WITHOUT ACCRUING DEBT.

THAT'S ALMOST MIRACULOUS.

WELCOME TO "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE."

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

Terry: LET'S START WITH

YOUR FIRST DAY OF HIGH

SCHOOL.

BECAUSE YOUR MOM SAID

SOMETHING THAT REALLY KIND

OF CHANGED THE COURSE OF

YOUR LIFE.

ABSOLUTELY.

SHE SAT ME DOWN AND

BASICALLY SAID, I LOVE YOU,

I BELIEVE IN YOU, BUT THERE

IS NO WAY I CAN SUPPORT YOU

FINANCIALLY ONCE YOU

GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL.

SO YOU NEED TO START

THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU'RE

GOING TO PAY FOR COLLEGE.

AND EVEN THOUGH THAT WAS

REALLY, REALLY HARD TO CHOKE

DOWN, IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST

GIFTS SHE COULD HAVE GIVEN

ME.

Terry: DID YOU HAVE ANY

THOUGHT OF THAT PRIOR TO

THAT CONVERSATION WITH YOUR

MOM?

I DIDN'T REALLY.

AT THAT POINT IN LIFE,

COLLEGE SEEMED SO FAR AWAY.

I THOUGHT, WHY DO I NEED TO

START PREPARING FOR IT NOW.

BUT SCHOLARS LOOK AT YOUR

ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL

EXPERIENCE.

SO STARTING YOUR FRESHMAN

YEAR IS THE PERFECT TIME TO

START IT.

Terry: AND YOUR MOTHER

WASN'T JUST SAYING THAT TO

BE STERN.

YOU WERE, AS A FAMILY, IN A

SITUATION WHERE SHE REALLY

COULDN'T HELP YOU

FINANCIALLY.

TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR

LIFE GROWING UP.

ABSOLUTELY.

WHEN I WAS THREE YEARS OLD,

MY MOM WAS WOKEN UP IN THE

MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO MY

DAD CONVULSING IN THE BED

HAVING A SEIZURE.

HE WAS RUSHED TO THE

HOSPITAL AND DIAGNOSED WITH

BRAIN CANCER.

AND THAT STARTED A JOURNEY

NO FAMILY EVER WANTS TO TAKE

OR PLANS ON.

AND WHEN I WAS SEVEN,

UNFORTUNATELY WE LOST HIM TO

CANCER, WHICH WAS JUST

DEVASTATING.

AND AFTERWARDS, WE FELL

BELOW POVERTY LINE AND

REALLY STRUGGLED

EMOTIONALLY.

I STARTED DEALING WITH

SELF-ESTEEM ISSUES.

I WENT THROUGH FITS OF

ANOREXIA, BULEMIA AND

CUTTING, AND I ACTUALLY

REACHED A SPOT WHERE I

WANTED TO END MY OWN LIFE.

AND IN THAT DARK MOMENT, THE

MOMENT I ALMOST TOOK MY OWN

LIFE, I SAID, I'M SORRY,

GOD, I CAN'T DO THIS

ANYMORE.

AND JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO

DO IT, I GOT A PHONE CALL,

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT,

ON A SCHOOL NIGHT, FROM MY

AUNT TANYA.

Terry: IT WAS AN

INTERVENTION BY THE LORD.

ABSOLUTELY.

SUCH A BLESSING.

SHE DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING

PROFOUND OR ANYTHING THAT

NECESSARILY BACKED ME OFF

THE EDGE.

BUT IN THAT MOMENT SHE SAID

EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO

HEAR TO REMIND ME THAT LIFE

WAS WORTH LIVING AND I

WANTED TO KEEP GOING.

THE NEXT DAY, I REALIZED I

CAN'T LET MYSELF GET THAT

DARK AGAIN.

I'M GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE A

DECISION.

I'M GOING TO HAVE TO START

PUSHING FORWARD FOR A BETTER

LIFE AND A BETTER FUTURE, OR

IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK.

AND THAT LAID THE FOUNDATION

FOR ME MOVING ON.

Terry: YOU MENTIONED

THAT YOU HAD SELF-ESTEEM

ISSUES.

I KNOW THAT A BIG PART OF

DOING WELL IN APPLYING FOR

SCHOLARSHIPS IS FIGURING OUT

HOW YOU STAND OUT IN A

CROWD, HOW TO PROJECT WHO

YOU ARE TO THE

DECISION-MAKERS.

HOW DID YOU GET FROM THE

PLACE YOU JUST DESCRIBED,

AND THE LOW SELF-ESTEEM OF

THAT, TO STANDING OUT IN A

WAY THAT MADE THEM SAY YES

TO YOU.

ABSOLUTELY.

I STARTED BELIEVING IN MY

OWN POTENTIAL.

I STARTED LOOKING AT THE

FUTURE AND REALIZING IF I

STARTED WORKING HARD, I

COULD BECOME AN IDEAL

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT.

AND I REALIZED THAT THE

SCHOLARSHIP PEOPLE AREN'T

LOOKING FOR PERFECT PEOPLE.

THEY ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE

WHO CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN

THE WORLD, AND I THOUGHT, I

CAN DO THAT.

Terry: WHEN YOU TALK

ABOUT BELIEVING IN YOURSELF

AND YOUR OWN POTENTIAL,

WHERE DID THAT START FOR

YOU?

WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE

CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF --

I'M SURE THERE ARE PEOPLE

WHO ARE WATCHING RIGHT NOW

SAYING WHERE DO YOU START

THAT JOURNEY?

HOW DID YOU TURN IT AROUND?

MY MOM WAS A HUGE

INFLUENCE FOR ME.

EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T HAVE A

LOT OF MONEY, EVEN THOUGH WE

WERE REALLY STRUGGLING, SHE

SAW SOMETHING IN ME FROM A

REALLY EARLY AGE AND SHE

SPOKE TO THAT CONSTANTLY.

AND SHE WOULD SAY, YOU DO

NOT HAVE TO STAY IN THIS

SPOT IN LIFE.

EVERY TIME I WENT UP FOR A

COLLEGE, WINNING MISS

INDIANA U.S.A., MY MOM WOULD

TALK TO ME LIKE I HAD

ALREADY WON IT.

SO SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH

PEOPLE WHO SPEAK TO THE

POSITIVE IS SO IMPORTANT.

Terry: WHAT ELSE IS

IMPORTANT?

BECAUSE IT IS NOT ANY ONE

THING, BUT IT IS SORT OF A

COMBINATION OF ALL OF THE

RIGHT THINGS.

WHAT ARE THE RIGHT THINGS TO

ACCRUE IN YOUR LIFE TO PUT

ON YOUR APPLICATION?

AND YOU CAN'T JUST TALK

ABOUT IT.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE DONE IT?

ABSOLUTELY.

BE WILLING TO PUT IN SOME

HARD WORK.

IT DOES TAKE SOME PUTTING

SOME EFFORT IN.

SCHOLARSHIP JUDGES LOVE TO

SEE COMMITMENT AND

ACTIVITY.

WHETHER IT IS SPORTS OR

VOLUNTEER WORK OR AN

ACADEMIC CLUB OR TEAM, GET

INVOLVED IN THINGS THAT YOU

ENJOY.

AND LEADERSHIP IS A GREAT

THING.

IF YOU CAN FIND THINGS YOU

ENJOY, AND TO START TO RALLY

PEOPLE AROUND AND LEAD THEM

TO IT, IT IS DEFINITELY THAT

HELPS STAND OUT.

Terry: LOOKING FOR

THOSE KIND OF LEADERSHIP OR

EXCELLING QUALITIES WITHIN

THE THINGS YOU'RE DOING

GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO WRITE

ON THE APPLICATION.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY'RE

LOOKING FOR?

YOU TALK ABOUT NEEDING TO

TELL YOUR STORY AS WELL.

HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

AND HOW DOES THAT WORK INTO

THE WHOLE THING?

MOST SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATIONS HAVE ESSAYS.

THAT GIVES YOU THE

OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH

THE JUDGES A LITTLE ABOUT

WHO YOU ARE AS A PERSON, AND

LET THEM SEE YOUR

CHARACTER.

AND IT IS GREAT TO LIST YOUR

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND

ACHIEVEMENTS, AND THEY LOVE

TO SEE THAT.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, THEY

WANT TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT

STANDS OUT IN THEIR MIND AND

HELPS YOU JUST BE

REMEMBERED.

Terry: REMEMBERED.

EXACTLY.

ABSOLUTELY.

SO SHARING A LITTLE BIT

DEEPER.

EVEN IF YOU'VE FACED

CHALLENGES AND YOU'VE

OVERCOME THEM, THEY WANT TO

SEE THAT.

Terry: YEAH.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT

THE STRESS OF ALL OF THIS

AND HOW YOU HANDLED IT, AND

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY ACHIEVED?

YEAH.

WELL, I ACTUALLY -- I

STARTED LOOKING AT THE

SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS LIKE MY

JOB.

MY MOM ALSO SAID THE

DECISIONS YOU MAKE RIGHT NOW

WILL IMPACT YOU FOR THE REST

OF YOUR LIFE.

THAT WAS SO IMPORTANT

BECAUSE IT REALLY DID.

JUST TAKING SIX MONTHS MY

SENIOR YEAR AND FILLING OUT

TONS AND TONS OF

APPLICATIONS PAID OFF SO

MUCH.

$500,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS IN

SIX MONTHS.

Terry: WOW!

SO JUST REALLY TAKING

THAT TIME TO DEVOTE TO THE

PROCESS AND JUST REALIZING

HOW MUCH IT CAN PAY OFF.

YES, IT CAN BE A LITTLE

FRUSTRATING, SPENDING THAT

TIME IN THE LIBRARY --

Terry: IS THAT WHERE

YOU GOT MOST OF YOUR

INFORMATION?

YOU JUST REACHE RESEARCHED

WHAT WAS OUT THERE?

I DID.

I DIDN'T NECESSARILY HAVE A

PERFECT ROADMAP, WHICH IS

WHY I WROTE MY BOOK, TO GIVE

STUDENTS AN EASIER WAY TO

FIGURE IT OUT.

I READ EVERY BOOK I COULD

FIND, READING EVERY ARTICLE,

CALLING SCHOLARSHIP

PROGRAMS, AND TRYING TO FIND

ANY INFORMATION I COULD.

Terry: AND WHAT ARE YOU

WANTING TO DO WITH YOUR

LIFE?

I AM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT

EDUCATION, AND HELPING

STUDENTS FIGURE OUT HOW TO

PAY FOR COLLEGE, THAT RIGHT

NOW THAT IS MY FOCUS,

HELPING STUDENTS FIND WAYS

TO AFFORD COLLEGE.

Terry: YOU'VE COME TO

THE TABLE AT THE RIGHT

TIME.

WE'RE HEARING ALMOST DAILY

ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF DEBT

THAT YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE

INCURRED JUST GETTING AN

EDUCATION.

SHE IS AN EXPERT AT THIS.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE TIPS,

CHECK OUT CHRISTINA'S BOOK.

IT IS CALLED "CONFESSIONS OF

A SCHOLARSHIP WINNER," IT IS

AVAILABLE WHEREVER BOOKS ARE

SOLD NATIONWIDE.

IT IS FILLED WITH WONDERFUL

INFORMATION TO HELP YOU, AND

TO HELP YOUR CHILDREN.

YOU NEED TO KNOW THERE IS A

WAY TO DO THIS, AND SHE IS

THE GIRL THAT HAS GOT THE

INFO.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

IT IS GREAT TO HAVE YOU WITH

US.

CONGRATULATIONS.

WHAT A WONDERFUL

ACCOMPLISHMENT.

THANK YOU.

Gordon: COMING UP, A

CONTROVERSIAL NEW WAY THAT

PARENTS ARE TRYING TO GIVE

THEIR CHILDREN AN ADVANTAGE

IN SCHOOL.

FIND OUT WHAT IT IS.

THAT'S UP NEXT.

Gordon: WELL, COLLEGE

SPORTS FANS ARE FAMILIAR

WITH THE TERM

"RED-SHIRTING," WHICH IS

USED TO DESCRIBE AN ATHLETE

WHO WILL SIT OUT FOR A YEAR,

GIVING HIM TIME TO GROW

BEFORE STEPPING FOOT ON THE

PLAYING FIELD.

NOW IT IS NOT JUST COLLEGE

ATHLETES WHO ARE

RED-SHIRTING.

AN INCREASING NUMBER OF

PARENTS ARE HOLDING THEIR

CHILDREN BACK FROM

KINDERGARTEN.

CHARLENE ISRAEL EXPLAINS.

EDUCATION IS LIKE

BUILDING A HOUSE.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE PROPER

FOUNDATION, WHATEVER YOU PUT

ON TOP OF IT IS GOING TO

CRUMBLE.

Reporter: KINDERGARTEN

CAN BE HARD ENOUGH.

THEY'RE DEALING WITH

BUSES, WITH NO TEACHERS, WE

GOING INTO A LUNCH ROOM.

Reporter: KINDERGARTEN

CAN BE EVEN HARDER FOR

YOUNGER CHILDREN.

THERE IS EVIDENCE-BASED

MEDICINE THAT SHOWS THAT

CHILDREN'S BRAINS JUST

AREN'T READY TO DO THAT AT

SUCH A YOUNG AGE.

Reporter: THAT'S WHY

SOME PARENTS ARE TAKING

DRASTIC STEPS TO HELP THEIR

KIDS DEAL WITH THE PRESSURES

OF EARLY LIFE.

RED-SHIRTING.

RED-SHIRTING.

RED-SHIRTING IS BASICALLY

HOLDING YOUR CHILD BACK A

YEAR SO THEY CAN START

KINDERGARTEN AT A BETTER

ADVANTAGE.

Reporter: IT WORKS LIKE

THIS: MOST SCHOOL DISTRICTS

HAVE A CUTOFF DATE WHEN IT

COMES TO ENROLLING A CHILD

IN KINDERGARTEN.

THOSE BORN AFTER THE CUTOFF

HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR.

DURING THAT YEAR, THE CHILD

GROWS OLDER AND MORE

DEVELOPED.

THAT IS GREAT NEWS FOR

THEM.

NOT SO GREAT FOR THOSE WHO

SLID INTO SCHOOL JUST BEFORE

THE CUTOFF DATE.

MY SON, WHEN HE WAS HERE

IN THE KINDERGARTEN CLASS,

HE WAS BEHIND IN READING.

AND HE RECOGNIZED THE FACT

THAT HE WAS BEHIND.

HE WOULD COME HOME AND SAY,

MOM, I'M NOT READING LIKE

THE OTHER KIDS ARE.

AND I THINK THAT HURT HIS

SELF-ESTEEM A LITTLE BIT.

THAT'S WHEN I DECIDED, I'M

NOT GOING TO FORCE THIS.

Reporter: AND SHE IS

NOT ALONE.

SOME STATISTICS ESTIMATE

THAT KINDERGARTEN

RED-SHIRTING HAS TRIPLED

SINCE THE 1970s.

FOR ME, IT WAS A REALLY

HARD DECISION.

MY YOUNGEST SON, HE IS THE

BABY, BY FAR.

THERE ARE MANY YEARS BETWEEN

HE AND HIS OLDER SIBLINGS,

AND EVEN THOUGH HE WAS

REALLY SMART MATURITY-WISE,

SOCIALLY HE WAS JUST

BEHIND.

Reporter: IN A

KINDERGARTEN CLASS, THE

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHILD

WHO IS ALMOST 6 VERSES A

CHILD WHO JUST TURNED 5 CAN

BE STAGGERING.

SOME KIDS ARE ABLE TO READ

AND WRITE.

OTHERS ARE JUST LEARNING HOW

TO SIT STILL.

I KNEW THERE WAS NO WAY

THAT AT 5 HE WAS GOING TO BE

ABLE TO GO INTO A NORMAL

KINDERGARTEN SETTING, AND BE

ABLE TO SIT FOR THREE HOURS

JUST WITH NO PROBLEM AND BE

ABLE TO DO THE WORK, AND

WORK INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT

ANY KIND OF ISSUES.

Reporter: THERE IS

ANOTHER SIDE TO IT.

KINDERGARTEN IS BECOMING

INCREASINGLY ACADEMIC, AND

SOME KIDS ARE FALLING

BEHIND.

KIDS ARE EXPECTED, GOING

INTO KINDERGARTEN, TO KNOW

ALL OF THEIR LETTERS, ALL OF

THEIR NUMBERS.

EVEN HOW TO READ SOME AND

HOW TO WRITE.

THESE ARE THINGS MOST OF US

WEREN'T TAUGHT UNTIL

KINDERGARTEN OR FIRST

GRADE.

WHEN WE WENT TO

KINDERGARTEN, THEY WERE

HOPING WE WOULDN'T SPILL OUR

PAINTS.

Reporter: AND THE

PROBLEMS ONLY GET WORSE AS

THE CHILD GETS OLDER.

I DIDN'T WANT TO START

HIM OFF BEHIND.

IF YOU SCREW THEM OFF RIGHT

OUT THE GATE, THERE IS NO

TELLING IF THEY'LL BE ABLE

TO REBOUND FROM THAT.

SO IF THEY'RE YOUNGER, IF

THEY'RE NOT FEELING SECURE

ABOUT THEMSELVES, OR THEY

HAVE NOT GOTTEN THE

FOUNDATION BECAUSE

DEVELOPMENTALLY THEY JUST

WEREN'T THERE YET, I JUST

SEE A SNOWBALL OF UGLY

HAPPENING TO THEM.

Reporter: BUT NOT

EVERYONE AGREES ABOUT THE

BENEFITS OF RED-SHIRTING.

ONE STUDY FOUND NO

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS TO THE

PRACTICE.

ANOTHER GROUP ACTUALLY

ADVISED AGAINST IT.

THEY SAY IT ASKS BRATES

EXACERBATES THE PROBLEM.

AND PARENTS FROM LOWER

INCOME HOUSEHOLDS MAY NOT BE

ABLE TO AFFORD TO KEEP THEIR

KIDS HOME AN EXTRA YEAR.

AND ONE EXPERT SAYS KIDS

SHOULD BE STARTING SCHOOL AS

EARLY AS THREE, NOT AS LATE

AS SIX.

BUT THAT IS NOT STOPPING

SOME PARENTS, WHO SAY

THEY'RE THE ONES WHO KNOW

WHAT IS BEST FOR THEIR

KIDS.

TO ME, CHRONOLOGICAL AGE

DOESN'T ALWAYS MATCH WHERE A

CHILD IS, AS FAR AS THEIR

LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT.

Reporter: SO A NEW CROP

OF SCHOOLS IS EMERGING, ONE

THAT IS CALLED "KINDERGARTEN

PREP."

IT IS A MODIFIED

PRE-SCHOOL.

MAYBE MORE DIDACTIC WORK,

WHICH IS MORE SIGHT WORDS

AND MORE LEARNING, RATHER

THAN PLAY AND LEARNING

COMBINED.

Reporter: SO IF YOU'RE

A PARENT WANTING TO GIVE

YOUR CHILD A LEG UP ON THE

OTHER STUDENTS OR A HEAD

START ON SCHOOL, JUST KNOW

THAT THE OPTIONS ARE THERE,

AND THAT THE DEBATE

CONTINUES.

I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS

NECESSARILY A CHOICE FOR

EVERYBODY, BUT IT WAS THE

RIGHT CHOICE FOR US.

LIFE IS JUST NOT FAIR.

YOU JUST HAVE TO MAKE THE

BEST OF IT, AND THE BEST

CHOICES THAT YOU CAN WITH

THE INFORMATION THAT YOU

HAVE AT THE TIME.

I WOULD LOVE TO PRETEND

BECAUSE I HELD MY CHILD BACK

A YEAR THAT NOW, YOU KNOW,

HIS CHILDHOOD IS GOING TO BE

UNICORNS AND RAINBOWS.

BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT

THAT'S -- I FEEL LIKE HAVE I

GIVEN HIM AN ADVANTAGE AS

FAR AS HIS OWN PERSONAL

GROWTH?

ABSOLUTELY, I DO.

DO I THINK THAT THIS IS

RIGHT FOR EVERY CHILD?

NO.

NO.

BECAUSE WE ALL DEVELOP

DIFFERENTLY.

Reporter: CHARLENE

ISRAEL, CBN NEWS.

Gordon: TERRY, WHAT DO

YOU THINK ABOUT THIS?

DO YOU THINK IT IS A SMART

IDEA?

Terry: I ACTUALLY DID

THIS WITH MY TWO OLDEST

KIDS.

IT WAS A PROGRAM HERE AT CBN

THAT INFLUENCED ME.

YOU HAD A PROGRAM CALLED, I

THINK IT WAS "SING, SPELL,

READ AND WRITE."

AND I SPOKE TO THE WOMAN WHO

DEVELOPED THAT, AND SHE

UNEQUIVOCABLY SUGGESTED

THAT.

MY OLDEST SON AND MY

DAUGHTER -- I HAD THEM

REPEAT KINDERGARTEN TWICE.

THEY DIDN'T CALL IT

RED-SHIRTING.

MY SON -- THEY SAY BOYS

DEVELOP LATER THAN THE

GIRLS.

AND MY DAUGHTER, LATER ON,

WE ENDED UP BUMPING UP A

CLASS, BACK TO WHERE SHE

WOULD HAVE BEEN BECAUSE SHE

WAS AHEAD OF THE KIDS IN HER

CLASS.

BUT I THINK IT BENEFITED

BOTH OF THEM, ACTUALLY.

IT GAVE THEM SOME SPACE TO

GROW WITHOUT HEAVY

EXPECTATION AT AN EARLY

AGE.

SO I'M FOR IT.

Gordon: I WOULD BE ALL

FOR IT, BECAUSE, NUMBER ONE,

I THINK IT WOULD REDUCE THE

EXPOSURE TO BULLYING.

IF YOU'RE ONE OF THE OLDEST

IN THE CLASS, YOU'RE GOING

TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A LEADER

BY THE OTHER STUDENTS AND

THE TEACHER.

AND THERE WILL JUST BE AN

ADVANTAGE FOR YOU GOING

FORWARD THAT WILL BE

TREMENDOUS, AND REALLY HELP

SHAPE A CHARACTER FOR LIFE

SUCCESS.

SO OFTEN WE THINK OF SCHOOL

IN TERMS OF ACADEMICS, AND

ARE YOU SMART ENOUGH, AND DO

YOU KNOW YOUR NUMBERS AND

LETTERS AND ALL OF THAT KIND

OF STUFF.

BUT THERE ARE REAL LIFE

LESSONS THAT YOU NEED TO

LEARN THAT ARE ACTUALLY MORE

DETERMINATIVE OF SUCCESS IN

LIFE THAN ACADEMICS.

Terry: AND I ACTUALLY

SAW THIS IN BOTH OF MY

CHILDREN LATER ON.

BECAUSE YOU DON'T THINK OF

THINGS LIKE THIS WHEN YOU'RE

TALKING ABOUT ACADEMICS, BUT

DRIVING -- DO YOU REALLY

WANT YOUR CHILD TO BE

DRIVING A YEAR EARLIER THAN

THEY NEED TO BE.

AND THERE IS PRESSURE TO DO

THAT WHEN THEIR FRIENDS ARE

ALL DRIVING.

BOTH OF MY KIDS THAT

RED-SHIRTED IN KINDERGARTEN

HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY MUCH

LEADERS AND INDEPENDENT

THINKERS.

I THINK THERE ARE THOSE

UNDERLYING THINGS THAT

SOLIDIFY A CHANGE IN THEIR

LIFE.

IT IS GOOD.

COMING UP, AN INNER CITY

MENTOR DISCOVERS A GREAT WAY

TO TEACH YOUNG KIDS.

HIS SECRET, NEXT.

Terry: IN CLASSROOMS

AROUND THE WORLD, CHILDREN

ARE STUDYING MATH AND

SCIENCE, BUT ONE GIRL IN

NICARAGUA SPENDS HER DAYS AT

SCHOOL THINKING ABOUT

SOMETHING ELSE.

TAKE A LOOK.

9-YEAR-OLD ARELIS HAD A

SERIOUS PROBLEM FOCUSING AND

EVEN LEARNING IN SCHOOL

SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE WAS

HUNGRY.

BEING HUNGRY IS AWFUL.

I HAD PAIN IN MY STOMACH.

Terry: ARELIS' FATHER

HAD BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR

MONTHS.

HER MOTHER GOT UP AT DAWN TO

MAKE BREAD TO SELL.

THAT BROUGHT IN ENOUGH TO

GIVE THE FAMILY ONLY ONE

MEAL A DAY.

THAT MEANT MOST NIGHTS

ARELIS WENT TO BED HUNGRY.

I WOULD FALL ASLEEP AND

DREAM THAT MY MOM BROUGHT ME

A PIECE OF CHICKEN AND

SALAD.

BUT WHEN I WOKE UP, IT WAS

JUST A DREAM.

Terry: ONE MORNING

ARELIS WENT TO CHURCH WITH

HER MOTHER AND SISTER AND

HEARD ABOUT A NEW PROGRAM

THROUGH A LOCAL ORPHANAGE

THAT IS SUPPORTED BY CBN'S

"ORPHANS' PROMISE." THE

PROGRAM PROVIDES FOOD FOR

THE CHILDREN, AND EVEN

TEACHES THEM ENGLISH.

HELLO, EVERYBODY.

MY NAME IS ARELIS.

I AM NINE YEARS OLD.

Terry: AFTER JUST A FEW

WEEKS AT THE CENTER, ARELIS

WAS LIKE A DIFFERENT CHILD.

AND SINCE "ORPHANS' PROMISE"

HAS BEEN PROVIDING THE TWO

EXTRA MEALS A DAY, SHE IS NO

LONGER HUNGRY AND IS DOING

MUCH BETTER IN SCHOOL.

I WANT TO THANK YOU,

"ORPHANS' PROMISE," BECAUSE

YOU HELPED ME SO MUCH.

THANK YOU.

Terry: YOU KNOW, WE'VE

BEEN SPENDING A LOT OF TIME

ON OUR PROGRAM TODAY TALKING

ABOUT EDUCATION, LEARNING,

DEVELOPMENT.

HOW CAN CHILDREN GROW AND

LEARN IF THEY'RE HUNGRY ALL

OF THE TIME, NEVER GETTING

ENOUGH NOURISHMENT.

THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE

THINGS "ORPHANS' PROMISE" IS

DOING AROUND THE WORLD,

REALLY.

WE'RE HELPING KIDS GO TO

SCHOOL, AND WHILE THEY'RE AT

SCHOOL, THEY GET A

NUTRITIOUS MEAL.

THAT HELPS THEIR PARENTS SO

THE CHILDREN DON'T NEED TO

BE PUT IN ORPHANAGES DO TO

POVERTY.

WE WANT TO SAY THANK YOU IF

YOU'RE A MEMBER OF "THE 700

CLUB".

LET'S LINK ARMS AND MAKE

THINGS HAPPEN IN THE NAME OF

JESUS.

TO JOIN "THE 700 CLUB," IT

IS $20 A MONTH, 65 CENTS A

GORDON?

Gordon: AND REAREAS

AND ALLIAS HAVE A GREAT

MENTOR, RONALD.

HE LOVES TO HAVE FUN WITH

THEM AND TEACH THEM ABOUT

THE BIBLE.

AND HERE IS HOW HE DOES BOTH

AT THE SAME TIME.

RONALD HAS BEEN

VOLUNTEERING TO HELP INNER

CITY KIDS FOR OVER 20

YEARS.

FOR TWO OF HIS FAVORITE

STUDENTS, ANDREAS AND

ALLISAS, HE IS PART OF THE

FAMILY.

I CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE A

MENTOR TO THEM BECAUSE I

LIKE TO TEACH THEM THINGS.

THIS FAVORITE THING TO

TEACH?

STORIES FROM THE BIBLE.

SO WHEN RONALD LEARNED ABOUT

THE NEW AND IMPROVED

"SUPERBOOK" ON "THE 700

CLUB," HE GRABBED THE

D.V.D.s AS SOON AS HE

COULD TO SHARE WITH THEM.

HE BELIEVES THEY'RE LEARNING

LESSONS THEY'LL NEVER

FORGET.

THEY ENJOYED LEARNING

ABOUT JESUS.

THEY WANTED TO HEAR MORE

ABOUT IT ON THEIR LEVEL,

WHICH MADE IT MORE

INTERESTING TO THEM.

Reporter: ANDREAS

LEARNED SO MUCH, HE WROTE A

LETTER TO "THE 700 CLUB."

HERE IS WHAT HE HAD TO SAY.

THE EPISODE OF

"SUPERBOOK" IS VERY GOOD.

I LIKE THE PART WHERE HE

FELL OFF THE ROCK.

Reporter: AND HE LOVES

THE TRADING BOOKS THAT COME

WITH EACH VIDEO.

THEY'RE CREATED WITH THE

LATEST IN ANIMATION

TECHNOLOGY, SURE TO CAPTURE

THE ATTENTION OF THIS

GENERATION'S KIDS.

I WOULD RECOMMEND IT FOR

FAMILIES, MOTHER, PARENTS,

SINGLE PARENTS, TO GET

"SUPERBOOK" FOR THEIR

CHILDREN.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR WHEN

ANOTHER "SUPERBOOK" COMES

OUT SO I CAN WATCH IT AND

LEARN SOME MORE ABOUT THE

BIBLE.

Gordon: FROM THE MOUTH

OF BABES, I CAN'T WAIT TO

GET ANOTHER COPY OF

"SUPERBOOK," FOR ANOTHER

EPISODE TO COME OUT SO I CAN

LEARN ABOUT THE BIBLE.

WE WANT TO MAKE BIBLE

LEARNING FUN.

AND WE'VE DONE IT WITH THESE

WONDERFUL CARTOONS,

"SUPERBOOK."

WHAT WE'RE ASKING YOU TO DO

EPISODES.

THIS IS "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE," WHERE WE

INTERACT WITH YOU.

SO LET'S GO OVER TO DIM

DIMTRIA IN THE CHATROOM.

MORGAN IS ASKING FOR

DIRECTION.

SHE SAYS, "I'M IN COLLEGE

NOW, BUT I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT

TO DO.

I NEVER FELT TO DO ONE

THING.

I JUST KNOW I WANT TO DO

SOMETHING IMPORTANT.

I'VE PRAYED, BUT I'VE HEARD

NOTHING.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING?"

Gordon: IT MAY NOT BE

TIME.

I'LL TELL YOU, MORGAN, FOR

ME I DIDN'T DISCOVER WHAT I

WANTED TO DO WITH LIFE UNTIL

I WAS 35 YEARS OLD.

ALONG THE WAY I HAD GOALS,

AND ONE OF THE GOALS WAS TO

GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE.

AND THEN I WANTED TO GO TO

LAW SCHOOL.

AND THEN I THOUGHT, I'VE GOT

TO PRACTICE LAW.

AND THEN I FIGURED OUT, I

DON'T LIKE THIS.

SO I HAD TO RADICALLY CHANGE

AND GO INTO MINISTRY.

IN COLLEGE, TRY TO FIND WHAT

YOU DO LIKE.

IT IS A WONDERFUL TIME WHERE

YOU CAN EXPLORE.

SO TAKE THE TIME TO DO

THAT.

WHEN YOU FIND OUT WHAT YOU

LIKE, NOT SOME CAREER OR

THAT KIND OF THING, BUT WHAT

YOU LIKE TO DO, IT IS A

GREAT BLESSING AND IT WILL

BLESS YOU FOR YOUR LIFE.

WE LEAVE YOU WITH THESE

WORDS FROM PROVERBS: "FOR

THE LORD GIVES WISDOM.

FROM HIS MOUTH COME

KNOWLEDGE AND

UNDERSTANDING."
