Reporter: LIKE MOST

14-YEAR-OLD GIRLS, DESALANI

LIKES TO HAVE FUN.

YET, WHILE MOST GIRLS HER

AGE ARE ENTERING THEIR

FRESHMAN YEAR OF HIGH

SCHOOL, COMPLETE WITH

DISCUSSIONS ABOUT BOYS AND

ALL OF THE LATEST FASHIONS,

THIS TEEN HAS BEEN FOCUSED

ON MORE IMPORTANT MATTERS,

ATTENDING COLLEGE.

SOMETHING SHE STARTED AT AGE

11.

SIMILAR TO ANY

ENVIRONMENT, BUT THIS

ENVIRONMENT WAS FULL OF

LEARNING.

I LOOK FORWARD TO IT.

Reporter: THIS IS

DESALANA'S MOTHER.

SHE SAYS SHE NOTICED HER

DAUGHTER'S PASSION FOR

LEARNING WHILE

HOME-SCHOOLING HER.

I STARTED READING TO HER

MY COLLEGE BOOKS, AND SHE

UNDERSTOOD THE COLLEGE

MATERIAL AT SIX YEARS OLD,

EIGHT YEARS OLD.

OUR FIRST TOPIC THAT I

READ ABOUT WAS ABOUT

CONSCIOUSNESS, AND I THOUGHT

THAT WAS VERY INTERESTING TO

STUDY.

Reporter: THAT

QUICKNESS FOR LEARNING

ENCOURAGED HER MOM TO ENROLL

HER IN A LOCAL COLLEGE.

ACADEMICALLY AND MENTALLY

SHE WAS PREPARED FOR IT.

I DIDN'T WANT TO PUT A CAP

ON IT AND HINDER HER AND

LIMIT HER.

IF SHE WAS ABLE TO

ACCOMPLISH IT, I WENT ON AND

ENCOURAGED HER TO GO AHEAD

AND MAKE THE MOST OF IT.

Reporter: WHILE MANY

SEE HER APTITUDE AS

EXTRAORDINARY, THIS GIRL

GENIUS SEES HER COLLEGE

EXPERIENCE AS NOTHING

SPECIAL.

I WAS TREATED AS NORMAL

IN THE CLASS.

A LOT OF CLASSES DIDN'T PAY

ATTENTION TO MY AGE.

I JUST COMPLETED THE WORK

LIKE THE REST OF THE

STUDENTS.

Reporter: WITH A HIGHER

I.Q., DESALANA SAYS SHE FELT

AT EASE TO CONTINUE THE

CLASSES.

THERE WERE SOME

ASSIGNMENTS THAT REQUIRED

FIVE PAGES OF WORK, AND I@ñ@ñ

WENT WAY OVER THE AMOUNT.

Reporter: SHE IS A

MEMBER OF HER SCHOOL'S HONOR

COLLEGE, AND SERVES AS A

STUDENT SENATOR.

HER DAY BEGINS WITH PRAYER

AND BIBLE STUDY WITH HER

FAMILY, WHICH SHE SAYS IS

THE KEY TO HER ACADEMIC

SUCCESS.

I THANK GOD FOR THAT

BECAUSE HE HAS GIVEN ME THE

ABILITY TO LEARN.

PROVERB 28: 5, IT SAYS THEY

SEEK THE LORD TO UNDERSTAND

ALL THINGS.

I'M VERY THANKFUL FOR THAT.

WE DIDN'T PLAN ON IT, BUT

IT IS GOD'S GLORY TO GIVE US

THE WISDOM TO EVEN GO

THROUGH THIS.

Reporter: HER CLEAR

BEGAN HERE AT COLLEGE OF

LAKE COUNTY.

SHE WENT ON TO ATTEND

CHICAGO STATE UNIVERSITY,

WHERE SHE IS SET TO RECEIVE

A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN

PSYCHOLOGY WITH A 3.9

G.P.A.

AS AMAZING AS THAT ALL IS,

SHE SAYS HER JOURNEY OF

LEARNING IS FAR FROM OVER.

I PLAN TO GO TO GRADUATE

SCHOOL AND GET A DOCTORATE

IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY.

SHE IS VERY DETERMINED TO

HELP OUT THE YOUNG PEOPLE,

AND JUST PEOPLE IN GENERAL.

Reporter: HOWEVER,

THERE IS ONE THING SHE HOPES

TO DO BEFORE HEADING TO GRAD

SCHOOL.

TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE.

Reporter: DESALANA'S

GOAL IS TO ONE DAY OPEN A

CLINIC WITH HER MOTHER, WHO

IS CURRENTLY PURSUING A

GRADUATE DEGREE IN CLINICAL

PSYCHOLOGY, ALONG WITH HER

OLDER BROTHER, JEREMY, ALSO

A PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR.

AND WHILE SOME SAY THE

14-YEAR-OLD COLLEGE GRADUATE

HAS MISSED OUT ON JUST BEING

A KID, SHE WHOLEHEARTEDLY

DISAGREES.

I DON'T FEEL LIKE I

MISSED OUT AT ALL.

I DO ENJOY HOBBIES.

AND I FEEL LIKE I LIVE A

VERY PURPOSEFUL LIFE.
