Terry: COMING UP --

TIRED OF BEING IN A

CLASSROOM.

Terry: SIX COUNTRIES,

ONE YEAR --

I WANTED TO GET OUT AND

SEE THE WORLD.

I WANTED TO BE

CHALLENGED.

Terry: AND THE

EDUCATION OF A LIFETIME.

GOD TOTALLY BROKE DOWN

EVERY PART OF ME.

Terry: ON TODAY'S "700

CLUB INTERACTIVE."

Gordon: ON "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE," WE USE

TECHNOLOGY TO PRAY FOR EACH

OTHER AND EXPLORE TOPICS

THAT MATTER TO YOU.

WATCH WHAT GOD IS DOING IN

THE WORLD TODAY.

Terry: HI.

THANKS FOR WATCHING "700

CLUB INTERACTIVE."

WE'RE GLAD TO HAVE OUR

FRIEND DAVE KIPGUARD HERE

WITH US, HE IS THE DIRECTOR

OF OUR FEATURES DEPARTMENT,

AND ALSO THE PROUD DAD OF

TWO.

YES, I AM.

AND NOT LONG AG AGO, MY

DAUGHTER FINISHED HIGH

SCHOOL.

MY SON IS GETTING READY TO

DO THE SAME.

FOR MANY GRADS, THE NEXT

STEP IS COLLEGE.

BUT A GROWING NUMBER OF

OTHERS ARE DOING SOMETHING

DIFFERENT: THEY'RE TAKING A

YEAR OFF.

GEORGE THOMAS INTRODUCES US

TO THREE STUDENTS WHO

RECENTLY TOOK A WORLDWIDE

JOURNEY DURING WHAT IS

CALLED A GAP YEAR.

George: THIS IS THE

STORY OF THREE

19-YEAR-OLDS.

*

George: WHO DECIDED TO

LIVE FOR ALMOST A YEAR

OUTSIDE THEIR COMFORT

ZONES.

LADY DOUGLAS IS FROM

AMARILLO, TEXAS.

GOD TOTALLY BROKE DOWN

EVERY PART OF ME, EVERY INCH

OF ME.

DEAR, JESUS, I JUST THANK

YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS DAY.

AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR

THE WAY THAT YOU'VE PROVIDED

FOR US THROUGHOUT THIS TRIP,

GOD.

George: KRISTIN HENDRIX

IS FROM NORMAN, OKLAHOMA.

I HAVE GROWN UP IN A

CHRISTIAN HOME, IN A

CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, TO WHERE

THAT'S ALL I'VE BEEN

SURROUNDED WITH.

SO I WASN'T EVER REALLY ABLE

TO MAKE MY PANTHER MY OWN.

George: AND TARRA

QUINSHAW IS FROM JACKSON,

TENNESSEE.

AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS

TIRED OF BEING IN A

CLASSROOM.

YOU'RE IN A CLASSROOM FOR 13

YEARS, AND THEN YOU'RE

EXPECTED TO GO TO COLLEGE

RIGHT AFTER THAT.

I WANTED O GET OUT AND SEE

THE WORLD.

George: THE TEENAGERS

SIGNED UP WITH A CAMP, A

COLORADO-BASED CHRISTIAN

ORGANIZATION, THAT

ENCOURAGES STUDENTS O TAKE

TO TAKE A YEAR OFF OF

SCHOOL, WEAN HIGH SCHOOL AND

COLLEGE.

HARVARD, YALE, AND PRINCETON

ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF HE'S

EXPERIENCES.

LUKE DIRECTS THE PROGRAM.

WE TELL STUDENTS, YOU'RE

MAKING AN INVESTMENT IN A

YEAR THAT IS GOING TO LAST A

LIFETIME IN REWARD.

George: SIX ADVENTURES,

SIX COUNTRIES, THREE

CONTINENTS, AND IT ALL

STARTS WITH ORIENTATION

WEEK.

SITTING IN THIS LITTLE

VALLEY IN BETWEEN TWO

MOUNTAINS WITH A RIVER

RUNNING THROUGH IT.

THEY'RE TAKING US TO ALL

DIFFERENT CORNERS OF

SOUTHWEST COLORADO AND THE

BEAUTIFUL SAN JUAN

MOUNTAINS, JUST TO BACKPACK

AND MOUNTAIN CLIMB.

IN THE MORNINGS, WE TAKE

THEM THROUGH A WORLD VIEW

CURRICULUM.

George: MORE THAN

10,000 HAVE ENROLLED SINCE

1996.

WE ARE OFFERING THEM AN

OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE WORLD

IN A DIFFERENT WAY, AND HOW

TO DO IT BY FOLLOWING JESUS

AND BY LOVING GOD AND LOVING

OTHERS.

George: IT BEGAN FOR

THE GIRLS ON THE STREETS OF

DENVER.

FOR NEARLY THREE MONTHS,

THEY PARTNERED WITH A

CHRISTIAN MINISTRY, TEACHING

AT-RISK STUDENTS AND

REACHING THOSE ON THE

MARGINS OF SOCIETY.

ALL THREE FACED RESISTANCE

AT HOME ABOUT TAKING THE

YEAR OFF.

I WAS ROLLING THROUGH THE

MOTIONS OF LIFE.

THERE WAS NOTHING GOING ON.

I WANTED OUT OF THAT.

I WANTED TO BE CHALLENGED.

George: THAT CHALLENGE

CAME NEXT IN HAITI, WHERE

THEY WORKED WITH AN

ORGANIZATION, PEDING MORE

THAN 8,000 SCHOOL CHILDREN

EACH DAY.

AND IN BETWEEN VISITS TO

ORPHANAGES, FOOD

DISTRIBUTION AND MEDICAL OUT

REACHES -- THE THREE HAD

PLENTY OF OTHER PROJECTS

THAT KEPT THEM BUSY.

I THINK LIVING IN

AMERICA, WE LIVE IN A

BUBBLE.

AND SO IT IS SO HARD TO SEE

WHAT THE REAL WORLD IS EVEN

LIKE.

BUT COMING AND DISCOVERING

THE WORLD FOR MYSELF HAS

JUST SHOWN ME HOW BIG THIS

WORLD IS AND HOW BIG OF A

GOD WE SERVE.

George: FOR THE NEXT

FEW MONTHS, THEY TRAVELLED

THOUSANDS OF MILES, STOPPING

IN THE AFRICAN COUNTRIES OF

RWANDA AND TANZANIA.

SERVING WITH LOCAL CHRISTIAN

PARTNERS ALL ALONG THE WAY.

WE BELIEVE WHEN YOU TAKE

STUDENTS TO THE MARGINS OF

THE WORLD, YOU'LL SEE GOD

PRESENT THE MOST.

OUR STUDENTS ARE LEARNERS.

THE CLASSROOM IS THE

CULTURE, AND THE MARGIN

MARGINALIZED COMMUNITY, AND

THEIR PROFESSORS ARE THE

PEOPLE THEY'VE COME TO

SERVE.

George: AND THEY HAD A

CHANCE TO CLIMB

KILIMANJARO.

THIS IS THE NIGHT THAT WE

SUMMIT.

HOW IS EVERYBODY FEELING?

SLIGHTLY TERRIFIED.

FREAKING OUT.

PREAKING OUT, MAN.

George: REACHING THE

19,340-FOOT SUMMIT PROVED TO

BE A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE

FOR TARA.

WHILE YOU'RE CLIMBING IT,

YOU REALIZE HOW SMALL YOU

ARE, AND THEN YOU THINK

ABOUT THE GOD WHO CREATED

THAT MOUNTAIN, AND HOW MUCH

BIGGER HE IS THAN THAT

MOUNTAIN.

AND HOW GREAT IT IS WE GET

TO SERVE A GOD THAT IS

LIMITLESS.

George: THE MEX

DESTINATION, INDIA, WITH

EXTREME LEVELS OF POVERTY.

ALL THREE SAID INDIA WAS THE

HAR DESTHARDEST, AS THEY

MINISTERED AMONG THE POOR.

I'VE ALWAYS BEEN IN A

SHELTER IN AMERICA, WHERE

FREEDOM OF RELIGION JUST

EXISTS.

AND GOD TOOK ME IN THAT

MOMENT, HE GRASPED ME AND

HUMBLED ME AND SHOWED ME I

SHOULD NEVER TAKE PREEMED

FREEDOM OF RELIGION FOR

GRANTED.

George: AND THEY WENT

TO REMOTE PHILIPPINE

VILLAGES, WHERE THE GIRLS

WORKED ON HEALTH PROGRAMS.

IT BEGAN ON THE STREETS OF

DENVER, COLORADO, AND FROM

THERE THE GIRLS WENT TO

HAITI, RWANDA, TANZANIA,

INDIA, AND FINALLY, HERE TO

THE VILLAGES OF PHILIPPINES,

WHERE FOLKS USE A HALF

BASKETBALL TO PEC FETCH

WATER IN A WELL.

FOR THE GIRLS, IT HAS BEEN A

LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE, AN

OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND

THE DEPTHS OF GOD'S LOVE FOR

THEM, AND ALSO FOR THE

PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER HEARD

THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.

THE LAST EIGHT MONTHS ON

GAP HERE HAS BROUGHT ME

CLOSER TO GOD.

BECAUSE I'VE SEEN HIM WORK

IN MY LIFE AND WORK IN

OTHERS LIVES SO CLEARLY.

NEVER ONCE IN THE BIBLE DOES

IT TALK ABOUT AN ORDINARY

LIFE.

BEING A LIVING SACRIFICE IS

MESSY.

IT'S HARD.

IT'S DIRTY.

I WANT PEOPLE TO

EXPERIENCE THE SAME JOY AND

THE SAME COMPASSION THAT

I'VE LEARNED THROUGHOUT THIS

GAP YEAR.

George: THE GAP YEAR

PROGRAM ENDED RECENTLY WITH

A GRADUATION CEREMONY BACK

IN COLORADO.

ALL THREE ARE STARTING

COLLEGE THIS FALL.

GEORGE THOMAS, CBN NEWS,

BAKOLO, PHILIPPINES.

Terry: AMAZING

OPPORTUNITY.

TALK ABOUT EXPANDING YOUR

VISION.

THAT CERTAINLY DOES IT.

I MEAN, PERSONALLY, I THINK

EVERY YOUNG PERSON IN

AMERICA, MOST OF US WHO ARE

NOT YOUNG ANYMORE, WOULD

BENEFIT FROM DOING SOMETHING

ON AN EXTENDED BASIS LIKE

THIS.

OFTEN WE'LL GO THROUGH, AND

I'M NOT SAYING THIS ISN'T

AVAILABLE, BUT A SHORT

MISSIONS TRIP DOESN'T HELP

YOU SEE HOW PEOPLE TRULY

LIVE AND WHAT THEIR NEEDS

REALLY IS, AS MUCH AS IT IS

WHEN YOU'RE ABLE TO DO WHAT

THESE YOUNG WOMEN DID.

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

IT IS FANTASTIC.

Terry: WE JUST HEARD

FROM THREE GIRLS WHO WENT TO

SCHOOL BEFORE LIVING

INTERNATIONALLY, AND UP

NEXT, WE'RE GOING TO MEET A

BOY WHO DID JUST THE

OPPOSITE.

WE'RE GOING TO HEAR THIS

MIRACULOUS JOURNEY, AND

THAT'S NEXT.

Terry: I'M ABOUT TO

TAKE YOU ON AN INCREDIBLE

JOURNEY, MADE POSSIBLE BY

ONE EXTRAORDINARY BOY.

IT'S THE STORY OF A BOY WHO

DARED TO DREAM AND OF A

HEAVENLY FATHER WHO LOVED

HIM ENOUGH TO GIVE HIM THE

DESIRE OF HIS HEART.

WELCOME.

FOR MORE THAN A YEAR,

CHRISTOPHER LUCHIMBA HAD A

DREAM TO COME TO THE UNITED

STATES TO ATTEND HIGH

SCHOOL.

THIS IS YOUR NEW DAD.

AFTER OVERCOMING MANY

OBSTACLES, HIS DREAM IS

FINALLY COMING TRUE.

AND THIS IS YOUR MOM.

[LAUGHTER]

Terry: I FIRST MET

CHRISTOPHER THREE YEARS AGO,

8,000 MILES AWAY.

NEAR HIS HOME IN MACHA,

ZAMBIA.

AS I HEARD HIS STORY, I MARV

VEL MARVELLED THAT A BOY

WITH SUCH A BRIGHT SPIRIT

HAD ENDURED SUCH HARDSHIP.

HIS MOTHER ABANDONED HIM,

AND HIS FATHER DIED OF AIDS,

AND HIS UNCLE USED HIM AS A

CHORE BOY AND CON DONKEY

HERDER.

WHEN HE FIRST ASKED TO GO TO

SCHOOL, HE WAS 12, AND THE

GOVERNMENT WOULD NOT EXCEPT

HIM BECAUSE HE COULD NOT

READ OR WRITE.

BUT CHRISTOPHER HAD A DREAM

TO GET AN EDUCATION.

AND HE FOUND HIS SCHOOL,

BUILT AND SUPPORTED BY

"ORPHANS' PROMISE." IT

DIDN'T MATTER TO HIM HE HAD

TO START WITH CHILDREN HALF

HIS AGE.

HIS HUMILITY AND

DETERMINATION REALLY TOUCHED

ME.

TO JUST SAY, I WILL NOT BE

REFUSED A FUTURE.

I MEAN, THAT'S -- AS A MOM,

YOU KNOW, I LOOK AT THAT

KID, AND I THINK HE HAS

NEVER REALLY HAD LOVE.

HE HAS NEVER REALLY HAD

ANYBODY WHO TOLD HIM WHAT A

GREAT KID HE IS.

AND HE HAS GOT SO MUCH

POTENTIAL.

IN THREE YEARS HE HAS MOVED

FROM KINDERGARTEN U UP TO

THE FOURTH GRADE.

HE KNOWS HE IS BEHIND, BUT

HE KNOWS HE CAN DO IT.

I THINK THAT IS AN AMAZING

THING.

WHO GIVES THAT TO A CHILD,

NORMALLY?

THEIR PARENTS.

HE HAS NOT HAD TO THAT FROM

ANYONE.

CHRISTOPHER'S NEXT CREAM WAS

TDREAM WAS TO BECOME A

BORDER AT THE SCHOOL, SO

INSTEAD OF HERDING DONKIES,

HE WOULD HAVE TIME FOR HIS

STUDIES.

YOU KNOW WHAT?

"ORPHANS' PROMISE" IS GOING

TO SPONSOR YOU.

SO AS OF TODAY, THIS IS YOUR

NEW HOME.

THANK YOU.

Terry: YOU ARE SO

WELCOME.

I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT GOD

HEARD YOUR PRAYER.

AND LAST NIGHT I WOKE UP AND

I WAS THINKING ABOUT YOU.

AND YOU KNOW WHAT I

THOUGHT?

UH-UH.

Terry: DO YOU KNOW WHO

DAVID WAS IN THE BIBLE?

UH-HUH.

Terry: YEAH, HE WAS A

GREAT MAN OF GOD.

AND YOU KNOW WHAT HE WAS

FIRST?

A SHEPHERD BOY.

AND THAT'S WHAT YOU HAVE

BEEN, A SHEPHERD BOY, AND

YOU'VE BEEN FAITHFUL TO

THAT, AND GOD WANTS TO DO

SOMETHING POWERFUL FOR YOU.

I KNEW THEN THAT GOD HAD A

PURPOSE FOR CHRISTOPHER

BEYOND WHAT WE COULD SEE.

FAST FORWARD TO TODAY, WHERE

HE IS GETTING HIS FIRST LOOK

AT THE PRIVATE CHRISTIAN

SCHOOL HE WILL ATTEND FOR

THE NEXT THREE YEARS.

ALREADY HE IS MAKING FRIENDS

WITH OTHER INTERNATIONAL

STUDENTS.

GOD HAS BEEN DOING SOME

POWERFUL THINGS FOR THIS

YOUNG MAN OVER THE PAST

YEAR.

Terry: SO THIS IS ONE

OF THE CLASSROOMS THAT

CHRISTOPHER WILL BE STUDYING

IN WHEN HE IS HERE.

I WANT TO TALK TO YOU A

LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE MIRACLE

OF ALL OF THIS.

YOU GILL AND RHONDA ARE

AMERICANS WHO RUN THE SCHOOL

IN ZAMBIA, AND HAVE BECOME

LIKE A FATHER AND MOTHER TO

CHRISTOPHER.

HE LOVED EDUCATION.

HE IS INQUISITIVE.

AND SO HE STARTED TALKING

WITH A LOT OF THE VOLUNTEERS

THAT CAME TO MACHU, AND I

WAS ALWAYS ASKING US, HOW

MUCH WOULD IT COST?

HOW HARD WOULD IT BE?

I WANT O GE TO GET AN

EDUCATION IN THE STATES.

I SAID, CHRISTOPHER, WE NEED

TO PRAY.

IF THIS IS THE DESIRE OF

YOUR HEART, WE NEED TO LET

GOD WROTE.

IT WAS THESE WEEKS LATER

THAT YOU WROTE AND SAID,

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT

CHRISTOPHER COMING TO THE

STATES.

Terry:

"ORPHANS' PROMISE" HAD

LEARNED THAT JOHN AND HOSANA

WERE INTERESTED IN HOSTING

AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IN

THEIR HOME AND AT THEIR

SCHOOL.

PEOPLE GET INVOLVED IN

MANY THINGS IN THEIR LIFE,

BUT WHAT IS GOING TO OUTLIVE

YOUR LIFE?

WHAT IS THE LEGACY?

THE ONE VERSE THAT REALLY

TALKS TO ME IS THAT YOU WILL

BE THE FOUNDATION FOR THE

GENERATION TO COME.

Terry: THE REED'S OFFER

WAS GENEROUS, BUT STILL A

LOT OF HURTLES HAD TO BE

JUMPED BEFORE HIS YOUNG MAN

COULD MAKE HIS JOURNEY.

CHRISTOPHER HAD NO PARENTS,

NO BIRTH CERTIFICATE, NO

RECORDS TO PROVE WHO HE WAS,

YET AMAZINGLY, HE WAS ABLE

TO GET A ZAMBIAN

REGISTRATION CARD AND THEN A

STUDENT VISA, AND FINALLY A

PASSPORT.

AND NO ONE THAT HEARS THE

STORY CAN SAY IT WAS AN

ACCIDENT OR COINCIDENTAL.

GOD WAS WITH HIM EVERY STEP

OF THE WAY.

WE GOT A PASSPORT IN A THIRD

WORLD COUNTRY IN ONE WEEK.

Terry: GOD HAS PROVIDED

SO AMAZINGLY FOR

CHRISTOPHER, A LOVING

FAMILY, A BEAUTIFUL HOME, A

COMMITTED CHURCH.

BUT WITHOUT THE GIFT OF

EDUCATION, CHRISTOPHER'S

FUTURE WOULD BE EXTREMELY

LIMITED.

THAT'S WHY "ORPHANS'

PROMISE" IS COMMITTED TO

PROVIDING EDUCATION AND JOBS

SKILL TRAINING FOR THE

CHILDREN THAT WE SERVE, SO

THAT THEIR HOPES AND DREAMS

CAN TRULY BECOME A REALITY.

WHAT WENT THROUGH YOUR HEART

AND YOUR MIND?

I WAS, LIKE, OH, GOOD.

WHO AM I?

I'VE BEEN JUST ASKING THIS

FOR THE PAST YEAR, AND THEY

ARE GIVING ME WHAT I'M

ASKING.

AND I JUST SAY, THANK YOU,

LORD.

Terry: CHRISTOPHER'S

ACADEMIC GOAL IS TO RETURN

TO ZAMBIA WITH INNOVATIVE

IDEAS TO HELP THE

IMPOVERISHED PEOPLE THERE.

AND THOUGH HE HAS TAKEN TO

HIS NEW AMERICAN FAMILY, HE

ALREADY MISSES HIS FRIENDS

AND TEACHERS IN ZAMBIA WHO

HAVE BEEN LIKE FAMILY.

Terry: YOU KNOW IT IS

GOING TO BE HARD SOME

TIMES.

UH-HUH.

Terry: BUT YOUR FAITH

IS GOING TO SEE YOU

THROUGH.

GOD NEVER CALLS YOU TO

ANYTHING HE DOESN'T PROVIDE

FOR YOU.

YEAH.

Terry: WE'RE ALL

WATCHING AND WE'RE ALL

PRAYING AND WE'RE ALL

KNOWING THAT GOD IS GOING TO

DO SOMETHING WONDERFUL WITH

YOU.

FROM A THATCHED ROOF HUT IN

ZAMBIA TO A SUBURBAN HOME IN

THE STATES, GOD CONTINUES TO

OPEN COARSE FO DOORS FOR

THIS YOUNG MAN.

IT IS WONDERFUL HAD

CHRISTOPHER CAN SEE THAT GOD

IS HIS FATHER AND GIVES HIM

THE DESIRE OF HIS HEART.

ARGUMENT AINTERPRETER

Terry: AS THIS DREAM IS

REALIZED, WE WAIT TO SEE

WHAT DREAM GOD WILL GIVE

CHRISTOPHER NEXT.

I JUST HEARD PARTICULAR

CHRISTOPHER IN AN E-MAIL A

FEW MONTHS AGO, AND HE WAS

THE STUDENT OF THE MONTH OF

HIS SCHOOL.

HE WENT FROM A BOY NOT ABLE

TO READ AND WRITE TO

PARTICIPATING IN ATHLETICS

AND ACADEMICS HERE IN THE

UNITED STATES. AND HE IS

NOT HERE JUST FOR HIMSELF.

HE HAS A DREAM FOR HIS

PEOPLE IN HIS COUNTRY.

I SAID HE WILL PROBABLY ONE

DAY BE THE PRESIDENT OF

ZAMBIA, AND I WILL BE THE

LEAST SURPRISED OF ANYONE.

THIS IS A BOY WITH DREAMS.

BUT MORE THAN THAT, WHAT I

WANT TO SAY TO YOU IS THERE

ARE SO MANY CHILDREN LIKE

HIM.

KIDS WHO JUST, FOR

CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE NO

FAULT OF THEIR OWN, ARE LEFT

WITHOUT A PLACE TO BELONG,

WITHOUT A FAMILY, WITHOUT

PARENTS TO LOVE AND

ENCOURAGE THEM.

OR MAYBE THEY HAVE A FAMILY,

BUT SUCH POVERTY THAT THEY

CAN'T GET AN EDUCATION.

O"ORPHANS' PROMISE" IS

REACHING OUT TO ORPHANS AND

VULNERABLE CHILDREN AROUND

THE WORLD, TO MAKE A

DIFFERENCE, SO THEY CAN

BECOME ALL GOD CREATED THEM

TO BE.

IT IS REALLY POSSIBLE WHEN

YOU AND I STEP UP AND SAY,

LET ME COME ALONGSIDE OF

YOU.

LET ME HOLD YOUR HAND.

LET ME MAKE YOUR WAY THROUGH

SCHOOL POSSIBLE.

IF YOU'D LIKE TO BE A PART

OF WHAT "ORPHANS' PROMISE"

IS DOING, COME WITH US ON

THIS JOURNEY AROUND THE

WORLD TO HELP CHILDREN.

YOU CAN DO IT BY CALLING

THAT TOLL-FREE NUMBER ON

YOUR SCREEN.

1-888-777-1999.

JUST GIVE YOUR BEST GIFT,

AND I CAN ASSURE YOU IT WILL

GO INTO THE LIFE OF A YOUNG

PERSON WHO IS WAITING FOR A

FRIEND TO COME ALONGSIDE OF

THEM AND LOVE AND ENCOURAGE

THEM, AND SHOW THEM THE WAY

TO THE HEART OF THE FATHER.

SO CALL NOW.

DAVE?

Dave: COMING UP, WE'LL

MEET A COLLEGE TRACK AND

FIELD SAR WHO LOST HIS

ATHLETIC CAREER AND FOUND

HIS RUCALLING.

Dave: LONG JUMPER JAY

CARDIELLO LIVE, ATE, AND

BREATHED TRACK.

THEN AFTER AN INJURY, THE

ARKANSAS RAZORBACK WAS TOLD

HE WOULD NEVER JUMP AGAIN,

AND FOR JAY, THAT WAS THE

DEATH NAIL TO A LIFE AS HE

KNEW IT.

Reporter: HIS TEAMMATES

CALLED HIM JAY BIRD BECAUSE

HE COULD FLY.

THREE, ', W TWO, WE HAVE

IGNITION.

YOU'RE LOOKING GOOD.

COMMENCE LIFTOFF.

WE HAVE CLEARED THE

TOWER.

FIVE SECOND O GO.

TO GO.

Reporter: JAY CARD

CARDIELLO WAS A GIFTED

ATHLETE, AND EXCELLED IN THE

LONG JUMP.

HE SAYS IT GAVE HIM AN

IDENTITY.

ATHLETES IS WHAT DEFINED

ME GROWING UP.

Reporter: HE ALSO HAD A

LEARNING DISABILITY THAT

AFFECTED HIS SCHOOL WORK.

I HAD A VERY HARD TIME

WITH ACADEMICS, AND WAS VERY

FRUSTRATING AND BROUGHT ME

DOWN IN A SENSE BECAUSE IT

FELT LIKE THE STRUGGLE WAS

ALWAYS GOING TO LEAD TO

FAILURE.

Reporter: HE HOPED HIS

TALENT AS A LONG JUMPER

COULD LAND HIM A COLLEGE

SCHOLARSHIP, BUT THAT WASN'T

MAUVE.

> ENOUGH.

I GRADUATED 118 OUT OF

124.

SO MY GRADES WEREN'T GREAT.

THERE WAS NO DEAN'S LIST,

NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF.

Reporter: BUT HE WAS

DETERMINED TO BE A COLLEGE

ATHLETE.

SO HE WENT TO COMMUNITY

COLLEGE, AND HE WORKED WITH

TUTORS TO BRING HIS GRADES

UP.

EVENTUALLY, JAY BECAME A

RAZORBACK AT THE UNIVERSITY

OF ARKANSAS.

THAT'S WHEN THE REAL WORK

BEGAN.

I TOOK STUDY AND MADE IT

PART OF MY TRAINING.

SO IN ARKANSAS, I WAS

TRAINING, I WAS STUDYING,

AND I WAS PUTTING FORTH MORE

OF AN EFFORT.

WAS BURNING BOTH ENDS OF THE

CANDLE.

Reporter: JAY WAS

WEARING HIMSELF OUT, B BUT

THE STUDYING PAID OFF, AND

HE MADE THE DEAN'S LIST.

DURING THIS TIME HE MET RON,

WHO TALKED TO HIM ABOUT

JESUS CHRIST.

JAY WASN'T INTERESTED.

HIS ONLY GOAL WAS TO MAKE A

NAME FOR HIMSELF IN THE LONG

JUMP, AND HE DID.

BUT NOT IN THE WAY HE DID.

I GOT THE NICKNAME FOUL

CARDIELLO.

I WOULD RUN DOWN THE BOARD,

AND I WOULD JUMP, AND I WAS

EITHER A QUARTER

QUARTER-OF-AN-INCH OR A HALF

INCH OVER.

I WOULD ALWAYS FOUL.

Reporter: JAY WAS

DISTRAUGHT OVER HIS POOR

PERFORMANCE, SO HE TRAINED

EVEN HARDER.

BUT THE OVERTRAINING LED TO

INJURIES THAT REQUIRED

SURGERY.

IN TIME, HE PAID THE

ULTIMATE PRICE.

I MUST HAVE BEEN OUT

THERE THREE TO FOUR HOURS,

JUST JUMPING STRAIGHT.

I RAN DOWN THE RUNWAY AS

FAST AS I COULD.

AND MY HEEL CAME INTO THE

GROUND AND IT STUCK.

THE FORCE OF MY FOOT HITTING

THE GROUND, THAT SHOCK WENT

INTO MY SPINE AND CRACKED

THE COCCYX.

I MET WITH AN ORTHOPEDIC

SURGEON, AND HE BASICALLY

SAID YOUR CAREER IS OVER.

Reporter: JAY SPENT THE

REST OF THE SEMESTER IN BED,

AN EMOTIONAL WRECK.

I WAS NOT IDENTIFIED AS

ANYTHING, EXCEPT FOR AN

ATHLETE.

IT WAS BASICALLY A DEATH OF

MY BODY.

Reporter: THAT SUMMER

JAY HAD BACK SURGERY AND

DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL.

HIS FRIEND, RON, CALLED HIM

EVERY DAY TO PRAY FOR HIM

AND ENCOURAGE HIM.

WHAT HE WAS SAYING IS YOU

MED TO REWRITE WHO YOU ARE,

AND IDENTIFY YOURSELF.

AND IDENTIFY YOURSELF NOT AS

AN ATHLETE, BUT AS A FORMER

ATHLETE, AND NOW YOU'RE JAY

CARDIELLO, AND WHO YOU ARE.

Reporter: JAY REALIZED

HE NEEDED JESUS CHRIST TO

TELL HIM WHO HE WAS.

FINALLY HE CALLED RON AND

ASKED HIM TO PRAY WITH HIM.

SO HE STARTED TO PRAY

WITH ME.

AT THAT POINT -- I SAY

APRIL 1st, 1997, IS WHEN I

ACCEPTED CHRIST AS MY

SAVIOR.

I DON'T WANT TO BE IN THE

STANDS.

I WANT TO BE ON THE FIELD.

MY PEELED MA FIELD MAY NOT

BE IN RUNWAY, BUT IT IS IN

LIFE.

Reporter: HE DISRANS

FETRANSFER TO THE COLLEGE

OF WILLIAM AND MARY, AND HE

BECAME A LEADER IN THE

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN

ATHLETES.

AS HE WORKED TO REBUILD HIS

BODY, HE BUILT HIS OWN

CONDITIONING PROGRAM CALLED

JAY-CORE, AND TODAY HE IS AN

CONTRIBUTOR TO FITNESS

MAGAZINES.

IT IS NOT ABOUT

AESTHETICS.

ANYBODY CAN LOOK GOOD.

YOU WANT TO MAKE A STRONG

PERSON, A GOOD PERSON, AND

YOU BETTER WORK FROM THE

INSIDE OUT.

YOU BETTER APPLY IT,

APPLICATION, NOT

AESTHETICS.

Dave: JAY LEARNED A GOOD

LESSON, NO MATTER HOW GREAT

OF AN ATHLETE YOU ARE, IT

CAN ALL BE TAKEN AWAY.

AND THEN WHAT ARE YOU LEFT

WITH.

THE APOSTLE PAUL WROTE IN

THE BOOK OF CORINTHIANS:

"ALL ATHLETES ARE

DISCIPLINED IN THEIR

TRAINING.

THEY DO IT TO WIN A PRIZE

THAT WILL FADE AWAY.

BUT WE DO IT FOR ETERNAL

PRIZE."

TERRY, I WAS THINKING ABOUT

THIS AND PRAYING ABOUT THIS,

AND I WAS REMINDED ABOUT

WHAT PAUL SAID ABOUT

PRESSING FORWARD IN A RACE

TO FINISH IT FOR A HEAVENLY

PRICE, AND THAT A LOT OF

PEOPLE ARE PRESSING AND

GETTING EARTHLY PRIZES BUT

THEY'RE NOT GETTING ANYTHING

THAT IS EVEN CLOSE TO WHAT

THE HEAVENLY PRIZE IS.

Terry: I THINK THAT IS

SO TRUE.

I'VE BEEN READING A BOOK ON

THE MANTEL THAT WAS ON

JOSEPH'S LIFE IN THE OLD

TESTAMENT.

AND HOW MANY OF THE THINGS

THAT WERE DONE TO HIM WERE

UNPAIR AND CREATED ADVERSE

CIRCUMSTANCES, AND HOW IT IS

SO EASY FOR US IN OUR LIVES

TO BE DISTRACTED, BY THINGS

LIKE THAT, AND EVEN BE

DISTRACTED BY GOOD STUFF,

THAT TAKES THE PLACE OF

FOCUS.

BUT THIS BOOK WAS SAYING

EVEN THE ADVERSITY WAS A

PART OF GOD'S PREPARATION.

IF WE SEE A BIGGER PICTURE,

THEN WHAT GOES ON AROUND US

DOESN'T GET INSIDE OF US IN

A NEGATIVE WAY WHILE WE'RE

LOOKING FOR GOD.

IT IS REALLY ABOUT THE

ASSIGNMENT WE HAVE.

THAT'S REALLY THE CHALLENGE

I HAVE FOR ANYBODY WHO IS

WATCHING THIS.

I CHALLENGE YOU TO FIND OUT

WHAT YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS.

COME TO KNOW WHO JESUS

CHRIST IS.

AND HE'LL GIVE YOU YOUR

ASSIGNMENT.

YOU KNOW, PAUL TALKS ABOUT

THE BODY OF CHRIST BEING

ALMOST LIKE A TEAM, IF YOU

WILL, AND THAT DIFFERENT

ONES ARE SUPPOSED TO DO

DIFFERENT THINGS.

AND IF YOU DON'T FIND OUT

WHAT YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS,

WHAT IS THERE?

YOU'LL NEVER REALLY RECEIVE

A HEAVENLY PRIZE OR ANY KIND

OF PRIZE THAT IS WORTHY OF

ANYTHING IN GOD.

BUT WE HAVE PHONE

COUNSELLORS STANDING BY WHO

WILL GUIDE AND DIRECT

ANYBODY WHO IS CALLING INTO

KNOWING WHO JESUS CHRIST

REALLY IS.

AND YOU FIND YOUR TRUE

ASSIGNMENT THERE.

I'LL MAKE IT REAL EASY FOR

YOU TO REMEMBER THE NAME.

1-888-777-1999.

IT'S AS EASY AS THAT.

Terry: IT STRIKES ME,

TOO, AS YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

THAT, THAT SOMETIMES WE

THINK IT IS SO HARD -- WHERE

IS GOD?

WHY ISN'T HE DOING THIS?

WHY ISN'T HE DOING THAT?

BUT WHEN WHEN WE DRAW CLOSE

TO HIM, HE'LL DRAW CLOSE TO

US.

HE WANTS YOU TO KNOW YOUR

ASSIGNMENT.

HE IS NOT TRYING TO HIDE

THIS FROM YOU.

HE IS, LIKE, COME TO ME AND

LET ME REVEAL THIS TO.

DIMITRI IS OVER ON LINE WITH

SOME OF THE FOLKS IN OUR

CHATROOM.

WHAT ARE YOU HEARING THERE?

SPEAKING OF FINDING YOUR

ASSIGNMENT, SEAN IS ASKING:

"IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG

WITH LIVING AN ORDINARY

LIFE.

I PHYSICALLY CANNOT TRAVEL

OR MINISTER ON THE STREET,

BUT I CAN GIVE TO THOSE WHO

DO.

IS THAT ENOUGH?

WILL THAT PLEASE GOD?"

Terry: WELL, FIRST OF

ALL, I THINK IT PLEASES GOD

THAT YOU WANT TO PLEASE

GOD.

I THINK THAT IS THE FIRST

AND FOREMOST.

AND, SECOND, LIFE IS

EXTRAORDINARY BECAUSE JESUS

IS IN YOUR HEART GIVING YOU

THE ABILITY TO PRAY FOR EACH

OTHER.

ALL OF THAT IS PART OF THE

GREAT PLAN.

YOU CAN LIVE AN

EXTRAORDINARY LIFE RIGHT

FROM WHERE YOU.

WE LEAVE YOU WITH THESE

WORDS FROM: "THE FEAR OF THE

LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF

KNOWLEDGE, BUT FOOLS DESPISE

INSTRUCTION."

GOD BLESS YOU, WE'LL SEE YOU

NEXT TIME.
