STAY HOME.

I DIDN'T WANT SOMEBODY

ELSE TO DO THAT FOR ME.

Gordon: -- OR TO WORK.

I LOVE MY JOB.

Gordon: DISCOVER THE

ANSWER ON TODAY'S "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE."

ON "700 CLUB INTERACTIVE,"

WE USE TECHNOLOGY TO PRAY

FOR EACH OTHER AND EXPLORE

TOPICS THAT MATTER TO YOU.

WATCH WHAT GOD IS DOING IN

THE WORLD TODAY.

*

Gordon: WELCOME TO THE

SHOW.

IT'S AN ISSUE THAT SWAYS

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS,

CREATES HEADLINES AND

DIVIDES FAMILIES ACROSS

AMERICA.

THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE

WORKPLACE.

Terry: SOME WOMEN ARE

HAPPY TO STAY AT HOME, WHILE

OTHERS WANT TO ACHIEVE

PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS, AND

FOR SOME, THEY'RE NOT REALLY

SURE WHERE THEY SHOULD BE.

SO WATCH THIS.

AS A MOTHER, IT WAS JUST

MY STRONG DESIRE TO BE HOME

WITH MY BABY -- MY BABIES --

AND HUG ON THEM AND LOVE

THEM.

I DIDN'T WANT SOMEBODY ELSE

TO DO THAT FOR ME.

I WANTED TO BE THE ONE.

SO I DID END UP STAYING HOME

FOR ABOUT THREE YEARS.

I LOVE MY JOB.

I WORK IN FINANCE.

AND IT'S NOT SOMETHING I

EVER THOUGHT I WOULD GET

INTO.

I KNEW I WANTED TO COME BACK

TO WORK.

I DON'T KNOW WHY.

IT'S NOT THAT I DIDN'T WANT

TO BE WITH HIM.

BUT I JUST FELT LIKE THAT'S

WHAT I NEEDED TO DO.

I NEVER FELT, LIKE, THE LORD

WAS TELLING ME YOU NEED TO

STAY HOME AND BE WITH HIM

EVERY MINUTE.

I WORKED FULL-TIME FOR

EIGHT YEARS.

AND I HAD A JOB I REALLY,

REALLY LOVED.

WHEN I BECAME A MOM, I KNEW

I WANTED TO STAY HOME SO I

COULD GIVE MY DAUGHTER MY

FULL ATTENTION.

I KNOW FOR ME, THIS WAS

DEFINITELY THE RIGHT

DECISION, TO NOT HAVE THE

TIME CONSTRAINTS OF JUGGLING

DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF WORK.

NOT THAT IT CAN'T BE DONE.

MY MOTHER DID IT

BEAUTIFULLY.

BUT I JUST KNEW FOR ME IT

WAS THE RIGHT CHOICE TO BE

HOME.

BECAUSE WE WERE ON ONE

INCOME, WE WERE STRUGGLING

FINANCIALLY.

WE DID PRAY ABOUT IT.

WE JUST SAID, LET'S PUT SOME

APPLICATIONS OUT THERE.

AND WE JUST PRAYED, LORD, IF

IT IS YOUR WILL FOR ME TO

RETURN BACK TO WORK, OPEN

DOORS.

IF NOT, JUST CLOSE THEM.

EVERY APPLICATION THAT I PUT

OUT THERE THEY WANTED TO

HIRE ME.

SO I WENT BACK TO WORK.

I FELT AT PEACE KNOWING, OR

FEELING CONFIDENT IN THE

FACT THAT GOD ALWAYS KNOWS

BEST.

MOSTLY THERE IS A PEACE.

I MEAN, THERE HAS BEEN

PERIODS OF TIME WHERE I'VE

BEEN, LIKE, IS THIS WHAT I'M

SUPPOSED TO BE DOING BECAUSE

I MISS HIM.

BUT IT HAS NEVER BEEN STRONG

ENOUGH FOR ME TO CONSIDER

LEAVING WORK.

I THINK I'M DOING THE RIGHT

THING.

PEOPLE QUESTION IT.

THEY'RE CURIOUS, AND

THEY'RE, LIKE, YOU HAVE ALL

OF THIS EDUCATION AND YOU

HAD A CAREER AND YOU'RE JUST

THROWING IT ALL DOWN THE

DRAIN?

I THINK EVERYTHING IN MY

LIFE HAS CONTRIBUTED TO ME

BEING A BETTER MOTHER.

I THINK MY WORK IS

DEFINITELY IN THE HOME.

NOW IT IS PRETTY MUCH A

24-HOUR JOB.

THERE IS COMPLETE PEACE IN

MY DECISION TO STAY HOME

WITH OUR DAUGHTER.

YOU KNOW, PEOPLE JUDGE.

PEOPLE JUDGE.

BUT I JUST HAVE COMPLETE

CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD.

SO I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO

WORRY ABOUT WHETHER PEOPLE

WERE JUDGING ME ABOUT --

JUDGING MY DECISION OR NOT.

Terry: WELL, JOINING US

NOW IS CAROLINE MCCULLAH,

THE AUTHOR OF "THE MEASURE

OF SUCCESS," AND WE WELCOME

YOU TO "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE."

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Terry: YOU SAID THERE

REALLY IS ISN'T A TEMPLATE

TO MEASURE SUCCESS, EITHER

PERSONALLY OR

PROFESSIONALLY.

TALK ABOUT THAT.

WE WANTED TO EMPHASIZE

THE FACT THAT THE TEMPLATES

WE LOOK FORWARD TO AS HUMAN

BEINGS ARE BASED ON HUMAN

STANDARDS.

> ARE YOU THE C.E.O.?

ARE YOU SUCCESSFUL?

BUT WE WANTED PEOPLE TO

MEASURE UP TO THE LORD'S

TEMPLATES, AND THEY LOOK

VERY DIFFERENT BECAUSE HE

GIVES US THINGS TO

ACCOMPLISH HIS GOAL FOR THIS

WORLD.

Terry: AND SO OFTEN THE

TEMPLATE BASED ON THE

WORLD'S STANDARDS HAS US

MEASURING UP TO SOMEONE

ELSE'S EXPECTATIONS INSTEAD

OF OURSELVES OR THE LORD'S.

YOU TALK ABOUT THE HOME IN

THE 21st CENTURY AND THE

HOME IN BIBLICAL TIMES.

A BIG DIFFERENCE.

YES.

WE SPENT THE FIRST THIRD OF

THE BOOK TO TALK ABOUT THE

HISTORY OF WORK FOR WOMEN.

BECAUSE I THINK OFTEN WHEN

WE LOOK AT THE PASSAGES THAT

TALK ABOUT WOMEN MANAGING

THEIR HOMES, WE LOOK AT IT

WHAT HAPPENED IN THIS SIDE

OF THE INDUSTRIAL

REVOLUTION, WHEN THE HOME

BECAME A PLACE OF

CONSUMPTION, RATHER THAN A

PLACE OF PRODUCTIVITY.

WOMEN WERE ECONOMICALLY

PRODUCTIVE AND THEY WERE

ALSO FRUITFUL PARENTS IN THE

SAME LOCATION.

IT IS JUST MUCH HARDER TO DO

SO NOW, WHEN WORK AND HOME

ARE SEPARATED, AND IT

REQUIRES A LOT OF BIBLICAL

WISDOM.

BUT THERE IS WISDOM TO HELP

US EVEN IN THESE DIFFICULT

TIMES.

Terry: I OFTEN TAKE MY

HUSBAND TO PROVERBS 31,

WHERE IT TALKS ABOUT HER

SERVANTS, AND SO FAR WE

HAVEN'T FOUND THAT IN OUR

HOUSE.

TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE

BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL

LEADERSHIP AND MOTHERHOOD

BECAUSE YOU SAY THERE IS

SOME SIMILARITY THERE.

UH-HUH.

Terry: IN WHAT WAYS?

IF YOU THINK ABOUT

MOTHERING AND MANAGEMENT,

THEY'RE A POSITION OF

COACHING.

MY SISTERS ARE RAISING MY

NIECES AND NEPHEWS, AND

THEY'RE ALL HITTING THEIR

TEEN YEARS, AND IT IS THAT

TRANSITION OF COACHING YOUNG

ADULTS INTO ASSUMING

RESPONSIBILITY FOR

THEMSELVES.

I HAVE A YOUNG TEAM AT WORK,

AND I'M COACHING THEM INTO

WORK SKILLS.

IT IS ABOUT NOT ASSUMING

GRANDIOSE PATTERNS FOR

YOURSELF, BUT FOR HELPING

YOUR TEAM SUCCEED.

Terry: WE JUST HEARD

MOMS IN THAT VIDEO PIECE

THAT JUST RAN.

DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES,

DIFFERENT HEART FEELINGS

ABOUT THE WHOLE THING.

HOW DOES A WOMAN KNOW

WHETHER SHE SHOULD STAY AT

HOME AND WORK OR WORK

OUTSIDE OF THE HOUSE.

I AGREE WITH THE LAST MOM,

AT HOME IS A LOT OF WORK.

IT IS NOT LIKE YOU'VE LEFT

THE WORKFORCE AND ARE NO

LONGER ENGAGED.

NOT AT ALL.

WE LIKE TO LOOK AT THE

PARTIAL OF TALENTS IN

MATTHEW 25, WHERE THE LORD

IS THE ONE WHO IS

RESPONSIBLE FOR GIVING YOU

THE THINGS YOU HAVE TO

INVEST.

BUT YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR

DOING SOMETHING WITH THEM.

WHETHER YOU PERCEIVE IT AS

BEING VALUABLE OR NOT.

WE DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE THE

LAST SERVANT WHO JUDGED

GOD.

SO I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR

THE RELATIONSHIPS, TIME,

CAPACITIES, TALENTS, WORK

OPPORTUNITIES THAT GOD GIVES

ME.

BUT I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR

INVESTING THEM.

SO WHAT HAPPENS IS SOMETIMES

WOMEN WILL ASSUME, WELL, MY

LIFE IS GOING TO WORK OUT

THIS WAY.

I DON'T HAVE THOSE THINGS

YET, BUT I'M GOING TO LIVE

TOWARDS THAT GOAL, AND THEY

DON'T INVEST WHAT THEY HAVE

NOW.

IF YOU HAVE A HUSBAND AND

CHILDREN, YOU KNOW THEY'RE

BIG BIBLICAL PRIORITIES.

BUT IF YOU DON'T YET, DON'T

SIT DOWN AND DO NOTHING WITH

YOUR LIFE BECAUSE YOU DON'T

HAVE THEM.

INVEST WHAT YOU HAVE.

Terry: YOU ALSO DISCUSS

WHAT YOU CALL MOMMY WARS.

TALK ABOUT THAT.

EVEN THOUGH I LIKE TO

PRETEND I'M ONLY 29, BACK

WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE IN THE

'80s, THERE WAS A TIME

PERIOD, BEFORE I BECAME A

CHRISTIAN, AND I WAS VERY

INVOLVED IN THE WOMEN'S

STUDIES DEPARTMENT AND

FEMINISM, AND THERE WAS A

GROUP OF FEMINISTS THAT SAID

WE SHOULD LEGITIMIZE THAT

WOMEN'S LIFESTYLES ARE

DIFFERENT FROM MEN'S AND NOT

THE SAME.

THEY CALLED THEMSELVES THE

SEQUENCERS.

AND THEY SAY WOMEN BEAR

CHILDREN, THEY GET OFF THE

WORKFORCE AND GET BACK ON

WITH NO PENALTY.

AND IF WE COULD MAKE THAT

HAPPEN, IT WOULD BE GREAT.

BUT THEY LOST THAT WAR.

AND SO IT SET UP THE MOMMY

WARS, AND BOTH ARE LOBBYING

CRITIQUE AND JUDGMENT ON

EACH OTHER.

Terry: AND, ALSO, IN

THAT WHOLE WAR OR ARGUMENT

CAME A LACK OF VALUE FOR THE

WOMAN WHO CHOOSES TO STAY AT

HOME WITH HER CHILDREN.

AND THAT LAST MOM SAID, A

LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE ASKED ME,

YOU HAVE THIS EDUCATION, YOU

DID THIS, AND NOW YOU'RE

GIVING IT ALL UP.

IT REALLY SHOULDN'T BE

PERCEIVED THAT WAY.

IT IS ONLY PERCEIVED THAT

WAY BECAUSE WE DON'T TALK

ABOUT THE LIFE -- THE ARK OF

AN ENTIRE'S WOMAN'S LIFE.

IF SHE CHOOSES TO STAY AT

HOME AND REAR HER CHILDREN

BECAUSE THAT'S HOW THE LORD

IS LEADING HER, THERE IS

STILL TIME TO THINK ABOUT

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO IN

THE SECOND HALF OF LIFE.

INVOLVEMENT DEEPER IN THE

COMMUNITY, IN THE CHURCH,

HOWEVER THE LORD LEADS.

IT IS A MATTER OF DECIDING

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO SIMMER

NOW AND WHAT ARE YOU GOING

TO PUT ON THE BACK BURNER.

A LOT OF TIMES WOMEN HIT THE

SECOND HALF OF LIFE AND

HAVEN'T THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT

IS FRUITFULNESS AND

PRODUCTIVITY GOING TO LOOK

FOR ME NOW?

Terry: SO THE WOMAN

NEEDS TO LOOK AT THE LARGER

PICTURE WHEN SHE IS MAKING

SOME OF THE CHOICES FOR

HERSELF.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE

HARDEST THING FOR YOUNG MOMS

AND THE DECISIONS THEY

MAKE?

I THINK IT IS HARD BEING

A YOUNG MOM.

WHAT SEEMS TO BE

ALL-ENCOMPASSING NOW, AND

THINKING THROUGH HOW AM I

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE FOR

MY CHILDREN NOW AND WHEN

THEY ARE ADULTS.

NOT LOSING FACT THAT WE'RE

PILGRIMS IN THIS LIFE.

THE ROLES WE HAVE AND ENJOY

NOW ARE JUST FOR THIS LIFE.

WE CAN'T LOSE SIGHT OF THE

THINGS THAT GO ON INTO

ETERNITY.

AND WE'RE BROTHERS AND

SISTERS TO EACH OTHER.

Terry: THE LEGACY THAT

WE LEAVE IS WHAT WE GIVE OUR

KIDS, REALLY.

YES.

Terry: I WANT TO

MENTION THIS IS A GREAT BOOK

THAT CAROLINE HAS WRITTEN.

IT IS CALLED "THE MEASURE OF

SUCCESS," AND THANK YOU FOR

BEING WITH US.

THIS IS AVAILABLE NATIONWIDE

WHEREVER BOOKS ARE SOLD.

THANK YOU.

Terry: GORDON?

Gordon: STILL AHEAD,

MEET A WORKING WOMAN OF THE

BIBLE.

FIND OUT WHO SHE IS AFTER

THIS.

Gordon: EARLIER, WE

LOOKED AT THE ROLE OF WOMEN

IN THE WORKPLACE IN TODAY'S

SOCIETY.

WE'RE NOW GOING TO TAKE LOOK

AT A PARTICULAR WOMAN IN THE

BIBLE WHO WORKED HARD AND

HAD AN UNUSUAL ROLE IN THE

EARLY CHURCH.

BEFORE WE GET TO HER, LET'S

LOOK AT HOW THE OLD

TESTAMENT DESCRIBES WOMEN.

AND IT'S AN INTERESTING

DESCRIPTION.

AND LET ME RUN THROUGH IT.

YOU FIND IT FROM PROVERBS

31.

"WHO CAN FIND A VIRTUOUS

WIFE.

HER WORTH IS FAR ABOVE

RUBIES.

THE HEART OF HER HUSBAND

SAFELY TRUSTS HER, SO HE

WILL HAVE NO LACK OF GAIN."

NOW, SOME OF US IN TODAY'S

SOCIETY MAY SORT OF PULL

BACK FROM A DESCRIPTION THAT

WOMEN -- THAT THE ROLE IS AS

A WIFE.

BUT LOOK AT THIS AGAIN

THROUGH FRESH EYES AS TO

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND HOW

EMPOWERING IT IS FOR WOMEN

IN A DAY AND AGE WHERE MOST

WOMEN WEREN'T ALLOWED TO OWN

PROPERTY, WEREN'T ALLOWED TO

HAVE ANY SAY IN SOCIAL

MATTERS, WEREN'T ALLOWED TO

CONDUCT ANY BUSINESS.

AND WHEN YOU READ THE

DESCRIPTION IN PROVERBS, YOU

ACTUALLY FIND THAT THE WOMEN

THAT GOD'S LOOKING FOR HAVE

ALL OF THOSE ROLES AND MUCH

MORE.

"SHE SEEKS WOOL AND FLAX,

AND WILLINGLY WORKS WITH HER

HANDS.

SHE IS LIKE A MERCHANT

SHIP.

SHE BRINGS HER FOOD FROM

AFAR.

SHE ALSO RISES WHILE IT IS

YET NIGHT AND PROVIDES FOOD

FOR HER HOUSEHOLD."

ANY MOTHER WHO HAS MADE

LUNCHES FOR SCHOOL KNOWS

ABOUT THAT.

HERE IT IS: "SHE OWNS

PROPERTY, SHE CONSIDERS A

FIELD AND BUYS IT.

AND THEN SHE OWNS THAT FIELD

BECAUSE FROM HER PROFITS SHE

PLANTS A VINEYARD.

AND THEN SHE MAKES

MERCHANDISE.

HER LENGTH DOES NOT GO OUT

AT NIGHT.

SHE STRETCHES HER HAND TO

THE DISPATCH --" IT'S A

SPINNING THING.

"SHE MAKES LINEN AND

GARMENTS AND SELLS THEM.

PROVIDES SASHES FOR THE

MERCHANTS.

SHE WATCHES OVER THE WAVES

OF HER HOUSEHOLD AND DOES

NOT EAT THE BREAD OF

IDLENESS."

WELL, THAT ACTUALLY IS

RATHER EMPOWERING, THAT

WOMEN ARE PROPERTY OWNERS.

WOMEN ARE BUSINESS OWNERS.

WOMEN ENGAGE IN ALL KINDS OF

PROFITABLE ENTERPRISES.

WELL, THAT'S A DIFFERENT

PICTURE.

AND IT GIVES YOU A MUCH

DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE OLD

TESTAMENT.

WELL, WHAT ABOUT THE NEW

TESTAMENT?

IN SOME OF THE VERSES THAT

PAUL WROTE, IF YOU TAKE THEM

OUT OF THE CONTEXT OF WHAT

HE WAS DOING AND THE PEOPLE

THAT WERE ON HIS MINISTRY

TEAM, WELL, YOU LOSE SIGHT

OF HOW HE SPECIFICALLY

ENDORSED WOMEN.

AND ENDORSED WOMEN NOT FOR

THE WORKPLACE BUT FOR THE

CHURCH.

HERE IS -- IT IS NOT VERY

OFTEN CITED.

IT IS A LITTLE KNOWN VERSE,

ROMANS 16: "I COMMEND TO

YOU, PHOEBE, OUR SISTER, WHO

IS A SERVANT OF THE CHURCH

IN SINCEA --" WHICH WAS

RIGHT NEXT FOR CORINTH.

"THAT YOU MAY RECEIVE HER IN

A MANNER WORTHY OF THE

SAINTS."

SO HE HONORS HER.

RECEIVE HER WORTHY AS A

SAINT.

"AND YOU ARE TO ASSIST HER

IN WHATEVER BUSINESS SHE HAS

NEED OF YOU, FOR, INDEED,

SHE HAS BEEN A HELPER OF

MANY, AND OF MYSELF, ALSO."

LET'S LOOK AT THE GREEK

BEHIND SOME OF THOSE

SPECIFIC WORDS.

"SERVANT OF THE CHURCH," IS

SERVANT OF THE ASSEMBLY.

IT IS USUALLY DIOKNOS.

THIS IS THE ONLY TIME AN

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THIS

BIBLE, IN THE NEW KING

JAMES, THE KING JAMES

VERSION, THAT IT IS

TRANSLATED AS "SERVANT."

THE TENDEL ENGLISH VERSION

OF THE BIBLE TRANSLATED IT

DEACON BECAUSE THAT'S THE

NORMAL USAGE.

SO SHE IS A DEACON OF THE

CHURCH IN SANCRE.

AND SHE WAS A HELPER OF

PAUL, AND HELPER OF THE

CHURCH.

THE WORD IS USUALLY

TRANSLATED AS BENEFACTOR, A

PATRON.

SO GETTING THE PICTURE OF

PHOEBE, MORE LIKELY THAN

NOT, THE CHURCH IN THAT CITY

WAS HELD IN HER HOME.

SHE WAS WEALTHY.

SHE HAD BUSINESS INTERESTS.

SHE WAS IN A SHIPPING

COMMUNITY.

SHE WAS THE ONE WHO WOULD

PROVIDE, NOT JUST FOR PAUL,

BUT FOR THE CHURCH.

AND SHE WAS RECOGNIZED FOR

THAT WITH THE TITLE OF

DEACON BECAUSE THAT WAS HER

POSITION.

SHE WAS THE OWNER OF THE

PLACE WHERE THE CHURCH MET.

AND BECAUSE SHE WAS A

BUSINESS WOMAN IN A SEAPORT

TOWN, SHE WAS TASKED WITH

SOMETHING EVEN GREATER.

HERE IS SOMETHING THAT IS

RARELY TRANSLATED INTO THE

ENGLISH VERSIONS.

AND SO IF YOU GO TO THE END

OF ROMANS, IN THE NEW KING

JAMES VERSION, YOU WON'T

FIND THIS.

BUT IT'S IN THE ORIGINAL

GREEK MANUSCRIPT.

AND IT'S TRANSLATED

LITERALLY.

AND THESE ARE NOTATIONS IN

PHOEBE'S OWN HAND.

2 ROMANS WAS WRITTEN FROM

CORINTH BY PHOEBE, THE

DEACON, THE SERVANT, OF THE

SANCRE ASSEMBLY.

SO NOT ONLY DID PAUL COMMEND

HER TO THE CHURCH IN ROME

AND ASSIST HER BECAUSE SHE

HAS BEEN A BENEFACTOR AND

PATRON OF ME, BUT PAUL

LITERALLY GAVE HER THE

LETTER OF THE ROMAN CHURCH

AND ASKED HER TO DELIVER IT

TO THAT CHURCH.

WHICH MEANS SHE WOULD HAVE

BEEN THE ONE TO READ THE

LETTER TO THE CHURCH IN

ROME.

THAT IS AN INCREDIBLE ROLE.

AND WHEN YOU START LOOKING

AT NOT JUST PHOEBE, BUT YOU

LOOK AT LYDIA, YOU LOOK AT

DORCUS, YOU LOOK AT

PRISCILLA, ALL OF THE OTHER

MEMBERS OF THE TEAMS THAT

HELPED PAUL IN HIS VARIOUS

MISSIONARY JOURNEYS, WELL,

YOU GET A MUCH DIFFERENT

PICTURE OF THE ROLE OF WOMEN

IN THE EARLY CHURCH.

TERRY?

Terry: STILL AHEAD, A

YOUNG MOTHER SUFFERS PANIC

ATTACKS.

MY HEART WOULD BEGIN

BEATING SO HARD I WOULD BE

OVERWHELMED WITH EXTREME

NAUSEA, TO THE POINT TO

WHERE I WOULD BEGIN TO

VOMIT.

IT WAS MY SECRET.

IT WAS MY SECRET, MY BIG

SECRET.

Terry: WHY SHE COULDN'T

KEEP HER SECRET FOR LONG,

AFTER THIS.

Gordon: TRISH WILKINSON

WANTED TO BE THE BEST MOM,

WIFE, AND CHRISTIAN SHE

COULD BE.

AND THEN ONE DAY TRISH HAD A

MELTDOWN AND REALIZED SHE

COULDN'T BE PERFECT

ANYMORE.

MY HEART WOULD BEGIN

BEATING SO HARD THAT YOU

COULD LITERALLY LOOK AT MY

CHEST AND JUST SEE MY HEART

BEATING FROM MY CHEST.

IT WAS MY SECRET.

IT WAS MY BIG SECRET.

AND WHEN I EXPERIENCED THOSE

EPISODES, MOST OF THE TIME I

WOULD HIDE MYSELF.

I WAS THE MASTER OF

DISGUISE.

Reporter: BEING GOOD

WAS NEVER GOOD ENOUGH FOR

TRISH WILKINSON.

SHE WANTED TO BE PERFECT.

THE BEST MOTHER, BEST

WIFE.

I HAD THE CLEANEST HOUSE,

THE BEST CHRISTIAN, BEST

TEACHER, BEST FRIEND, AND

BEST PERFORMER.

Reporter: SO TRISH MADE

SURE EVERY MOVE SHE MADE WAS

FLAWLESS.

NO SHORTCUTS, NO REST, AND

CERTAINLY NO MISTAKES.

I EQUATED PERFORMANCE TO

VALUE.

I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO HANDLE

IF YOU DISLIKED ME OR IF YOU

WERE DISSATISFIED WITH ME.

IF I WAS A FAILURE, THEN YOU

WEREN'T GOING TO LOVE ME.

Reporter: AS A WIFE AND

MOTHER, TRISH'S LIFE GOT

MORE DIFFICULT AS SHE TRIED

TO HAVE THE PERFECT MARRIAGE

AND PERFECT CHILDREN.

EVENTUALLY IT ALL CAUGHT UP

WITH HER AND SHE BEGAN

HAVING PANIC ATTACKS.

THE EPISODES WOULD PASS, BUT

TRISH DIDN'T DARE TELL

ANYONE ABOUT THEM.

INSTEAD, SHE PRETENDED

EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL.

BUT THE ATTACKS GREW WORSE.

I WOULD B BE OVERWHELMED

WITH EXTREME NAUSEA, TO THE

POINT WHERE I WOULD BEGIN TO

VOMIT.

AND THEN YOU HAVE THIS

OVERWHELMING SENSE OF

EXTREME FEAR.

IT WOULD BE AN ARRAY OF

THINGS.

WELL, I'M AFRAID OF LOSING

MY MIND.

I'M AFRAID OF DYING.

I'M AFRAID OF LOSING

CONTROL.

Reporter: FINALLY, WHEN

THE ATTACKS GREW TOO PAINFUL

TO BEAR, SHE WENT TO THE

E.R. TO SEE A DOCTOR.

AND HE DIAGNOSED ME WITH

SEVERE CLINICAL DEPRESSION.

WELL, I REFUSED TO BELIEVE

THAT DIAGNOSIS BECAUSE I WAS

A BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIAN.

AND I THOUGHT, I'M A

CHRISTIAN.

I LOVE GOD WITH ALL OF MY

HEART.

AND NOT ONLY DO I LOVE GOD

WITH ALL OF MY HEART, I AM

WORKING FOR HIM.

THIS DIAGNOSIS HAS GOT TO BE

INCORRECT.

SO I IGNORED THE FACT THAT I

WAS CLINICALLY DEPRESSED FOR

FOUR YEARS.

Reporter: SHE DIDN'T

UNDERSTAND WHY THIS WAS

HAPPENING.

AFTER ALL, IN HER MIND SHE

HAD DONE EVERYTHING

PERFECTLY.

I WAS PERPLEXED, AND I

WAS ANGRY.

AND I HAD A CONVERSATION

WITH GOD IN MY HEART AND IN

MY MIND, AND I BEGAN TO SAY,

GOD, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY

YOU WOULD ALLOW THIS TO

HAPPEN IN MY LIFE.

Reporter: FOR FOUR

YEARS TRISH IGNORED THE

DIAGNOSE, BUT THE PANIC

ATTACKS INTERFERED WITH

EVERY ASPECT OF HER LIFE.

TRISH COULD NO LONGER

PRETEND EVERYTHING WAS

OKAY.

I JUST TOTALLY BROKE

DOWN.

AND IT BECAME REALITY FOR

ME.

AND I HAD TO FACE IT.

I HAD TO FACE MY FEAR AND I

HAD TO FACE REALITY.

AND I NEEDED DAILY MEDICAL

ATTENTION.

Reporter: THROUGH HER

SESSIONS WITH A CHRISTIAN

COUNSELLOR, SHE REALIZED GOD

LOVES HER UNCONDITIONALLY,

EVEN WHEN SHE IS NOT

PERFECT.

HE JUST BEGAN TO MOLD ME

AND MAKE ME AND JUST BEGAN

TO HEAL ME FROM THE DEPTH OF

WHO I WAS IN MY SOUL AND

HELPED ME TO REALIZE, TRISH,

I LOVE YOU UNCONDITIONALLY.

AND MY PERSPECTIVE OF

EVERYTHING WAS FRESH AND NEW

AND HEALTHY AND VIBRANT.

AND I WAS EMPOWERED AND I

WAS MOTIVATED.

Reporter: TODAY TRISH

IS AT PEACE.

SHE DOESN'T HAVE PANIC

ATTACKS ANYMORE, AND SHE

SAYS SHE CLEARLY UNDERSTANDS

GOD'S LOVE FOR HER.

NOW MY RELATIONSHIP WITH

HIM -- I WORK FOR HIM BUT I

WORK FOR HIM BECAUSE I LOVE

HIM.

I DON'T WORK FOR HIM BECAUSE

I FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO MERIT

HIS LOVE OR HIS GRACE OR HIS

BLEG.

BLESSING.

YOU CAN BE HEALED FROM

CLINICAL DEPRESSION.

YOU CAN LIVE IN VICTORY,

THAT EVERY CHALLENGE THE

ENEMY BRINGS YOUR WAY,

EVERYTHING SOCIETY BRINGS

YOUR WAY, GOD IS GREATER.

Gordon: HE IS GREATER,

BUT WE HAVE TO TAKE THE TIME

TO LET HIM BE GREATER.

THERE IS SOMETHING, I THINK,

FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG WITH HOW

WE'RE APPROACHING LIFE IN

THE MODERN AGE.

WE ALL HAVE THESE MOBILE

DEVICES THAT ARE CONSTANTLY

ASKING FOR OUR ATTENTION.

AND THEY BEEP WITH DIFFERENT

ALARMS.

AND WE'RE CONSTANTLY

CONNECTED OR DRAWN AWAY, AND

EVERYTHING IS URGENT.

AND THEN IF WE MISS

SOMETHING, IF WE MISS A

CONTACT, SUDDENLY WE FEEL

LIKE WE FAILED.

AND THESE AREN'T THE RHYTHMS

OF LIFE THAT GOD WANTS FOR

US.

WE'RE OVERWORKED.

WE'RE OVERSTRESSED.

WE'RE OVERSTIMULATED.

WE'RE OVERCONNECTED.

AND HOW DO YOU FIND PEACE IN

THAT?

WELL, IF, LIKE THE WOMAN IN

THAT STORY, YOU'RE TRYING TO

MAINTAIN THE ILLUSION OF

PERFECTION, WELL THEN YOU

KNOW THAT IT'S NOT WORKING.

AND ALL YOU'RE TRYING TO DO

IS BUILD UP SOME FALSE

FACADE.

AND THE MORE YOU RUN TO

BUILD THAT UP, THE WORSE IT

GETS BECAUSE THE MORE YOU

REALIZE IT'S NOT PERFECT.

THE APOSTLE PAUL IS AN

ILLUSTRATION FOR US.

HERE HE IS.

HE CLAIMS HE IS A PHARISEE

OF THE PHARISEES, OF THE

TRIBE OF BENJAMIN.

AND HE SAYS, REGARDING THE

LAW HE WAS PERFECT.

NOW START IMAGINING THAT.

IMAGINE LIVING A LIFE THAT

UNDER THE TORAH YOU CAN

CLAIM THAT YOU WERE

BLAMELESS.

THAT THE TORAH HAD NOTHING

AGAINST YOU, THAT YOU

OBSERVED EVERY SABBATH, YOU

OBSERVED EVERY SACRIFICE.

YOU OBSERVED EVERY DETAIL OF

THE LAW.

AND HE SAID THAT, I WAS

BLAMELESS.

AND IN HIS ZEAL TO BE

PERFECT BEFORE GOD, HE TOOK

IT ON HIMSELF TO PERSECUTE

CHRISTIANS, THAT THESE ARE

ALL BLA BLASPHEMY

BLASPHEMYERS.

WELL, HE CAME TO A GREAT

REALIZATION, THAT ALL OF HIS

RIGHTEOUSNESS, ALL OF HIS

RIGHT ACTIONS WERE FILTHY

RAGS.

WHEN YOU COMPARE IT TO THE

GLORY OF GOD, YOU COMPARE IT

TO WHAT JESUS DID.

AND THEN HE CAME TO THE

REALIZATION, "I GLORY IN MY

WEAKNESSES BECAUSE IT SHOWS

HOW MUCH JESUS HAS WORKED

THROUGH ME."

WHEN YOU REALIZE THIS

STRENGTH IS MADE PERFECT IN

YOUR WEAKNESS, WELL, THAT'S

WHEN YOU GET TO THE MOMENT

OF BREAKTHROUGH.

WHERE HE CAN FINALLY ACT ON

YOUR BEHALF.

IF YOU'VE BEEN STRUGGLING TO

KEEP UP, IF YOU'VE BEEN

WONDERING, WHY DON'T I HAVE

THE PERFECT MARRIAGE, THE

PERFECT CHILDREN, THE

PERFECT LIFE, WHERE IS ALL

OF THAT?

REALIZE THERE IS ANOTHER

WAY.

THAT YOU CAN GLORY IN THE

WEAKNESSES, AND WHEN YOU LET

JESUS INTO YOUR WEAKNESS,

WELL THEN HIS STRENGTH IS

MADE PERFECT.

AND IT ACTUALLY BRINGS HIM

GLORY, FOR YOU TO REST IN

HIM AND TO RELY ON HIM.

IF YOU WANT HELP WITH THAT,

WE'RE JUST A PHONE CALL

AWAY.

IF THERE ARE THINGS THAT

YOU'RE CARRYING, REALIZE HIS

BURDEN IS LIGHT.

HIS YOLK IS EASY.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS COME

TO HIM AND ROLL THAT BURDEN

OFF YOUR OWN SHOULDERS AND

LET HIM TAKE IT.

AND HE IS PERFECT, AND HE IS

ABLE.

SO IF YOU WANT US TO PRAY

WITH YOU, IT IS OUR PLEASURE

AND OUR PRIVILEGE TO DO

THAT.

JUST CALL US.

1-888-777-1999.

WE LEAVE YOU WITH THIS

ENCOURAGEMENT FROM PSALM:

"THE WORD OF THE LORD IS

RIGHT, AND ALL HIS WORK IS

DONE IN TRUTH."

FOR TERRY, FOR ME, FOR ALL

OF US, GOD BLESS YOU.

WE'LL SEE YOU AGAIN.
