What does it take to make it to the Olympics? Hear the story behind the champion, Gabby Douglas. Read Transcript

UR,

COULDN'T AFFORD A DOCTOR OR

MEDICINE, AND HAD ONLY ONE

OPTION.

LITERALLY, I JUST

REMEMBER STAYING UP AT NIGHT

JUST PRAYING OVER HER AND

SAYING, JESUS, JESUS,

JESUS.

Reporter: AND THEN

GABBY STARTED GAINING WEIGHT

AND BECAME A HEALTHY, HAPPY

BABY.

I MEAN, THERE IS NO OTHER

EXPLANATION AS TO HOW SHE

MIRACULOUSLY RECOVERED AND

JUST GREW INTO THE AMAZING,

STRONG CHILD THAT SHE IS.

Reporter: AS GABBY

FOUND HER PASSION IN

GYMNASTICS, SHE SPENT HOURS

IN TRAINING.

BUT IT WAS EXPENSIVE, AND

NATALIE COULDN'T AFFORD ALL

OF HER CHILDREN'S PURSUITS.

AND THEN GABBY'S TWO OLDER

SISTERS DECIDED TO GIVE UP

THEIR ACTIVITIES SO THEIR

SISTER COULD PURSUE HER

OLYMPIC DREAMS.

AT FIRST NATALIE WOULDN'T

HAVE IT.

HOW, AS A PARENT, AM I

GOING TO ALLOW MY OTHER

CHILDREN TO GIVE UP THEIR

DREAMS AND PASSIONS TO HELP

SUPPORT THE DREAMS AND

PASSION OF ONE.

AND I STRUGGLED WITH THAT

FOR A LONG TIME.

AND IT WAS MY KIDS REALLY

THAT SET ME FREE.

AND THEY SAID, YOU KNOW,

MOM, WE WANT TO DO THIS.

WE WANT TO SEE HER ACHIEVE

HER GOALS.

AND WE FEEL LIKE WE'LL GET

THERE, TOO, BUT RIGHT NOW

THIS IS HER TIME.

Reporter: NATALIE KNEW

THE ROAD AHEAD WOULD NOT BE

AN EASY ONE, SO SHE MADE

PRAYER AND BIBLE STUDY A

PRIORITY.

GABBY SAYS THOSE FOUNDATIONS

KEPT HER ON TRACK IN HER

MOST DIFFICULT TIMES.

I REMEMBER 2011, THE

CHAMPIONSHIPS, AND BEFORE

THAT I HAD HURT MY

HAMSTRING.

AND MY MOM SAID, WHEN YOU'RE

HURT, MEDITATE.

AND I DID.

AND I KEPT QUOTING, "BY HIS

STRIPES, I'M HEALED."

I WENT TO THE COMPETITION

AND I DID REALLY BAD.

AND I REMEMBER WALKING BACK

TO THE HOTEL ROOM, AND I

WAS, LIKE, WHERE WAS GOD?

I THOUGHT HE FAILED ME.

WHERE WAS HE?

HE WASN'T OUT FOR ME.

AND MY MOM SAID, I DON'T

KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TONIGHT,

BUT I KNOW GOD HAS A PLAN

FOR US.

AND THAT YEAR I MADE THE

2011 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND

BROUGHT HOME A TEAM GOLD

MEDAL.

I THINK AT THAT POINT MY

FAITH CAME INTO PLAY.

I REALLY HAD TO RELY, YOU

KNOW, ON THE BIBLE AND JESUS

TO BRING ME OUT OF THAT HARD

SITUATION.

Reporter: THAT WOULDN'T

BE THE LAST TIME.

AS THE OLYMPIC TRIALS

APPROACHED, GABBY MOVED TO

DES MOINES, IOWA, TO TRAIN,

BUT THE LONG HOURS AND TIME

AWAY FROM FAMILY WERE TAKING

A TOLL.

I GOT TO A REALLY DARK

PLACE WHERE I ALMOST WANTED

TO QUIT THE SPORT OF

GYMNASTICS RIGHT BEFORE THE

OLYMPIC GAMES.

AND I SAID, YOU CANNOT

QUIT.

WE'VE COME TOO FAR.

TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE ON THIS

JOURNEY WITH US.

SO MANY PEOPLE, OTHER THAN

OURSELVES, HAVE SACRIFICED.

I THINK THAT'S WHEN I HAD

TO RELY ON MY FAITH THE

MOST.

YOU KNOW, I WENT TO THE GYM

AND SAID, OKAY, IF I'M GOING

TO GO TO THE OLYMPICS, I'M

GOING TO DO IT BIG.

I PRAYED, MEDITATED ON

SCRIPTURES, AND I WENT BACK

TO THE GYM.

AND MY COACH SAID HE SAW

THIS, LIKE, FIRE IN MY

EYES.

Reporter: WITH THAT,

GABBY AND FOUR TEAMMATES WON

THE U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP TO

QUALIFY FOR THE SUMMER GAMES

IN LONDON.

MOST DIDN'T EXPECT THAT

GABBY, NICKNAMED THE FLYING

SQUIRREL, WOULD SOON MAKE

OLYMPIC HISTORY.

I DID HAVE A LOT OF

DOUBTERS.

THEY SAID, SHE WILL PROBABLY

BE MEDIOCRE, AND NOT ON

TOP.

I DIDN'T WANT TO PROVE THEM

WRONG, BUT I WANTED TO PROVE

MYSELF RIGHT.

I WANTED TO PROVE I CAN DO

THIS AND I WILL DO IT.

Reporter: AND GABBY

ROSE TO THE TOP.

THEN IN HER FINAL EVENT, SHE

CLINCHED THE GOLD.

I LOST IT.

IT WAS JUST TOTALLY A

SURREAL FEELING.

LIKE, IS THIS HAPPENING?

CAN SOMEBODY PINCH ME?

CAN WE MAKE SURE THIS IS

ACTUALLY HAPPENING?

AND THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT ALL

OF THE THINGS WE HAD GONE

THROUGH TO GET THERE, ALL OF

THE YEARS OF SACRIFICE.

ALL OF THE YEARS OF HARD

WORK.

Reporter: GABBY EARNED

ANOTHER GOLD WHEN SHE AND

THE FIERCE FIVE WON THE TEAM

COMPETITION.

I MEAN, A LOT OF

EMOTIONS.

I WAS SO HAPPY.

AND I FINALLY REALIZED IT

WAS ALL WORTH IT, ALL OF THE

YEARS OF SACRIFICING,

INJURIES, DIFFICULT TIMES,

TOUGH TIMES, IT ALL PAID

OFF.

Reporter: EVEN THOUGH

THE JOURNEY TO HER FIRST

OLYMPICS IS OVER, GABBY SAYS

PRAYER STILL KEEPS HER

GROUNDED.

NOW SHE IS LOOKING AHEAD TO

2016.

THE FAMILY NOW LIVES IN

CALIFORNIA, WHERE SHE AND

HER SIBLINGS ARE ALL

PURSUING THEIR DREAMS.

AND AT 18, GABBY IS AS

ENTHUSIASTIC AS EVER.

I WANT TO ACCOMPLISH

ANOTHER OLYMPICS.

I LOVE COMPETING.

I LOVE TRAINING.

BUT AFTER GYMNASTICS, I

DON'T KNOW.

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT, SO

WE'LL SEE.

Terry: AMAZING STORY.

IT WAS REALLY FUN TO WATCH

HER.

I MEAN, SHE E JUS JUST IS A

FUN ATHLETE TO OBSERVE AS

SHE IS SORT OF DOING HI HER

THING OUT THERE.

A REMARKABLE ATHLETE AND

I THINK ONE OF THE MOST

CAPTIVATING PART OF HER

STORY IS NOT JUST THE TIMES

OF VICTORY, BUT WHEN SHE HAD

THAT SIGNIFICANT LOSS.

Terry: IT KIND OF

DEFINES YOU.

YOU'VE INTERVIEWED A LOT OF

SPORTS FIGURES, AND IT IS

NOT ALWAYS THE VICTORIES

THAT DEFINES THEM.

IT IS THE STRUGGLE ALONG THE

WAY THAT GETS THEM THERE.

ISN'T IT INTERESTING TO

SAY, WHERE WAS GOD?

WHERE WAS HE?

WE TEND TO SOMETIMES EQUATE

GOD'S PRESENCE WITH IF I'M

VICTORIOUS, HE IS WITH ME.

IF I'M NOT EXPERIENCING

VICTORY OR SUCCESS, HE IS

NOT WITH ME.

IN OUR GROWTH IN THE

CHRISTIAN WALK, WE BEGIN TO

UNDERSTAND THAT GOD IS WITH

US WHETHER WE'RE IN VICTORY

OR WE'RE STRUGGLING.

IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD,

YOU KNOW, IN THE DOWN TIMES,

HOW DO WE PERCEIVE GOD IN

THOSE MOMENTS IS CRUCIAL.

Terry: UH-HUH.

I THINK YOU WOULD SAY THIS,

I THINK I KNOW YOU WELL

ENOUGH THAT YOU WOULD SAY

THIS THAT THE THINGS IN MY

LIFE THAT HAVE SHAPED ME ARE

MORE THAN THE STRUGGLES

RATHER THAN THE MOUNTAINTOP

EXPERIENCES.

EVERYBODY LOVES THE

MOUNTAINTOP EXPERIENCES, BUT

GOD SHOWS HIMSELF STRONG AND

REAL WHEN WE'RE IN THE HARD

CLIMB UP THE MOUNTAIN.

IT IS VERY, VERY

CHALLENGING.

HE DOES, AND I WONDER IF

THAT'S WHEN WE'RE REALING

SEEKING HIM?

Terry: WHEN WE REALLY

NEED HIM.

AND I'M SURE WITH ALL OF MY

HARD WORK AND ALL OF MY

EFFORT, I'M SURE GABBY WOULD

SAY THAT'S NOT ENOUGH.

CHERYL HAS WRITTEN US,

AND SHE SAID, "GABBY'S

FAMILY HAD TO MAKE A LOT OF

SACRIFICES ALONG THE WAY.

MY FAMILY IS IN THE SAME

BOAT.

NO, MY DAUGHTER ISN'T

TRAINING TO BE AN OLYMPIC

ATHLETE, BUT SHE HAS DREAMS

OF HER OWN.

I CAN FEEL THOSE DREAMS

PUTTING A STRAIN ON OUR

FAMILY.

AT WHAT POINT DOES A PARENT

SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?"

AND I THINK, TERRY, WITHOUT

KNOWING SPECIFICALLY WHAT

THE DREAMS ARE, THIS MADE ME

THINK OF -- AS SOON AS I

READ THIS, I WAS RECALLING

ONE OF MY FAVORITE WRITERS.

HE IS NAMED FRED DIC

BECNER.

AND A FAMOUS QUOTE OF HIS

IS: "PURPOSE IS THE PLACE

WHERE YOUR DEEP GLADNESS

MEETS THE WORLD'S NEEDS."

PERHAPS, CHERYL, IT IS A

TIME TO THINK WHAT GIVES

YOUR DAUGHTER REAL

GLADNESS.

IS THIS EXPIRVEGLY WHAT

SPECIFICALLY WHAT SHE WAS

DESIGNED FOR?

Terry: THAT'S A HARD

QUESTION TO ASK, TOO.

SOMETIMES WHEN WE GET

QUESTIONS FROM SOME OF YOU

WHO JOIN US ON THE SHOW,

THERE ISN'T A LOT OF

DETAIL.

AND THIS IS -- YOU HEARD

GABBY'S MOM TALK ABOUT THE

FACT THAT WHAT GABBY DID

REQUIRED SACRIFICE FROM THE

WHOLE FAMILY.

BUT I THINK ONE OF THE KEY

THINGS IS THEY DID IT WITH

JOY.

THEY ALL SAID, YES, WE WANT

TO DO THIS.

I DON'T KNOW THAT IT'S A

VERY WISE OR A GOOD THING TO

SACRIFICE THE WELL-BEING OF

A FAMILY, THE PEACE OF HEART

AND MIND OF A FAMILY.

THAT'S WHERE YOU REALLY NEED

TO SEEK THE LORD AND ASK GOD

FOR WISDOM.

IN MOST FAMILIES, THERE IS

MORE THAN ONE CHILD, AND YOU

HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE GROUP

INTO CONSIDERATION.

IF GOD IS IN IT, YOU KNOW

WHAT, HE WILL PROVIDE.

HE DID FOR GABBY'S FAMILY,

AND I DON'T THINK THEY HAD A

LOT OF MEANS WHILE SHE WAS

GOING THROUGH ALL OF THIS.

IT IS EXPENSIVE TO BE A

GYMNAST.

I SAY ASK.

ASK GOD TO SHOW YOU.

ABSOLUTELY.

GOOD COUNSEL.

COMING UP, THE ALL-STAR OUT

OUTFIELDER WHO STROKE OUT.

THE DAY I WALKED OUT, THE

DOCTORS HANDED ME A BOTTLE

OF PAINKILLERS AND SAID YOU

NEED TO BE ON THESE FOR THE

REST OF YOUR LIFE.

I NEVER DID DRUGS IN MY

LIFE.

GLEN WILSON SQUARES OFF

AGAINST HIS GREATEST

ADVERSARY WHEN WE COME

BACK.

PHILADELPHIA SPORTS FANS

MAY BE MAIM FAMOUS FOR

BOOGLY SAND CLAUSE SANTA

CLAUS, BUT THEY CHEERED GLEN

WILSON.

I REMEMBER WATCHING GLEN

WILSON HIT.

I REMEMBER WHEN A BASE HIT

WAS HIT, THE RIGHT FIELD

WOULD STAND UP BECAUSE THERE

WAS A GOOD CHANCE THAT GLEN

WILSON WOULD THROW THE

PLAYER OUT AT FIRST BASE.

HE WAS KNOWN AS GLENBO AND

LOVED THE ROAR OF FANS.

HE ALSO LOVED SOMETHING

ELSE, PRESCRIPTION

PAINKILLERS.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL'S GLEN

WILSON HAD A FLARE FOR THE

DRAMATIC, AND THE FANS LOVED

HIM FOR IT.

Announcer: OUTFIELDER

GLEN WILSON!

THERE WAS NO DOUBT.

I TELL PEOPLE ALL OF THE

TIME, THE ONLY REASON I

PLAYED MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

IS I JUST WANTED ATTENTION.

Reporter: HE IS BEST

KNOWN FOR HIS REMARKABLE

PLAYS FROM RIGHT FIELD.

I FELT THAT I WOULD

ALWAYS BE ONE OF THE BEST IN

THE WORLD.

Reporter: AT TIMES HE

WAS ALSO CALLED UPON TO

PITCH.

HAVING THAT ARM AND BEING

ABLE TO THROW THE WAY I WAS

THROWING WAS SO MUCH FUN, SO

MUCH EXCITEMENT.

I COULD FEEL THE FANS,

ESPECIALLY IN PHILADELPHIA,

THEIR EXCITEMENT OF SEEING

ME THROW.

IT BECAME SUCH A GAME FOR ME

INSIDE THE GAME.

Reporter: GLEN'S WIFE,

KIM, REMEMBERS LIFE IN THE

BIG LEAGUES DIFFERENTLY.

CHALLENGING.

VERY CHALLENGING.

YOU KNOW, GLEN IS SO

PASSIONATE ABOUT BASEBALL,

AND I KNEW THAT IT WAS GOING

TO BE JUST A GREAT JOURNEY,

BUT IT IS LONELINESS,

EMPTINESS.

THEY'RE GONE ALL OF THE

TIME.

WE HAVE THREE BOYS, BUT TWO

OF THEM I RAISED WHILE HE

WAS STILL PLAYING.

Reporter: THERE WAS

SOMETHING ELSE THAT BOTHERED

KIM, GLEN'S PROFESSED FATE

AS A CHRISTIAN WAS ONCE

BASED ON CONVENIENCE.

I WAS THAT GUY THAT

ACCEPTED CHRIST AT AGE 16.

AND I USED CHRIST TO MY

ADVANTAGE.

I THOUGHT YOU ACCEPT JESUS

CHRIST AS LORD AND SAVIOR.

GO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT AND

COME BACK AND ASK FOR

FORGIVENESS.

Reporter: GLEN LIVED

THAT WAY FOR YEARS.

HIS CAREER WAS CLOUDED WITH

ARGUMENTS WITH MANAGERS IN

THE FRONT OFFICE.

THEN IN 1993, WHEN GLEN

SUFFERED A BACK INJURY DUE

TO YEARS OF WEAR AND TEAR,

HE KNEW IT WAS TIME TO

RETIRE.

THE DAY I WALKED OUT OF

BASEBALL, DOCTORS HANDED ME

A BOTTLE OF PAINKILLERS, AND

SAID YOU NEED TO BE ON THESE

THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THEM.

NEVER DID DRUGS IN MY LIFE.

Reporter: WITH NO

UNDERSTANDING OF THE DANGERS

OF PAINKILLERS, GLEN STARTED

TAKING VICODIN DAILY.

GRADUALLY HE BECAME

ADDICTED.

AND AS TIMES HE WAS

IRRATIONAL.

IT GOT TO WHERE I DIDN'T

EVEN WANT TO GO OUT IN

PUBLIC.

AND THE ADDICTION STARTED TO

MAKE ME REALIZE THAT I

PROBABLY DON'T NEED TO BE IN

PUBLIC.

Reporter: BY THE END OF

15 YEARS, GLEN WAS TAKING

UPWARDS OF 12 VICODIN A

DAY.

THEN ONE DAY WHILE HE AND

KIM WATCHED A NEWS STORY ON

PAINKILLERS, THEY REALIZED

GLEN WAS ADDICTED.

I GOT MAD.

I GOT ANGRY.

I WENT TO MY DOCTOR THE NEXT

DAY AND I CHEWED HIS BUTT

OUT.

AND I SAID, I'M NOT A DRUG

ADDICT.

AND IF I GO TO GET OFF OF

HIS, HERE IS WHAT IS GOING

TO HAPPEN TO ME.

AND I ASKED HIM, THOUGH, ONE

QUESTION AFTER I VOICED MY

FRUSTRATION.

I SAID, HAVE YOU EVER HAD

ANYBODY JUST QUIT?

AND HE SAID, YEAH.

Reporter: GLEN KNEW HE

WOULD NEED HELP TO OVERCOME

THE ADDICTION.

SO HE WENT HOME AND CRIED

OUT TO GOD.

THIS TIME GLEN MEANT IT.

AND I SAID, GOD, I DON'T

KNOW HOW TO GET OFF THESE

PILLS.

AND I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING

BUT BASEBALL.

I NEED SOME HELP HERE.

SO I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU ME,

AND YOU DO WHAT YOU WANT.

AND LO AND BEHOLD, I DID NOT

KNOW WHAT I WAS ASKING FOR.

BECAUSE IT BECAME A JOURNEY

AND A RIDE THAT I'M STILL

RIDING TODAY.

Reporter: THAT DAY GLEN

SURRENDERED HIS LIFE TO

JESUS CHRIST AND FOUND THE

STRENGTH TO END HIS

ADDICTION.

MAN, IT'S REALLY SIMPLE.

SEEK YEE FIRST THE KINGDOM,

AND ALL THINGS SHALL BE

ADDED UNTO YOU.

IT'S WHAT I LIVED BY.

SEEK YEE FIRST THE

KINGDOM -- WHAT DOES THAT

MEAN?

SEEK YEE FIRST THE KINGDOM.

WELL, IT MEANS WHEN YOU GET

UP IN THE MORNING START

LOOKING FOR GOD.

BECAUSE I GUARANTEE YOU HE

IS GOING TO SHOW UP.

Reporter: GLEN NO

LONGER BATTLES ADDICTION.

KIM SAYS HER PRAYERS HAVE

BEEN ANSWERED.

AMAZING, YEAH.

HUMBLING.

AND HE LOVES HIS FAMILY.

HE LOVES HIS CHILDREN.

HE'S KIND.

YOU KNOW, HIS JOURNEY HAS

JUST BEEN ABOVE AND BEYOND.

SHE HAS BEEN A VERY

PATIENT WOMAN.

BECAUSE WE'RE ON OUR 33rd

OF MARRIAGE, WITH THREE

WONDERFUL SONS.

A WONDERFUL DAUGHTER-IN-LAW,

AND NOW WE'RE GRANDPARENTS

TO THE MOST GORGEOUS LITTLE

GIRL I'VE EVER SEEN.

Reporter: IT HAS BEEN

YEARS SINCE GLEN WAS IN THE

SPOTLIGHT, IMPRESSING THE

BASEBALL WORLD WITH HIS

TREMENDOUS RIGHT ARM.

HE IS OKAY WITH THAT BECAUSE

HE NO LONGER NEEDS THE

ATTENTION.

HE IS COMFORTABLE WITH WHO

HE IS IN CHRIST.

WHEN YOU ACCEPT JESUS

CHRIST AS LORD AND SAVIOR,

CHRIST COMES TO LIVE INSIDE

OF YOU.

AND YOU'RE A NEW CREATION.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE

EXCEPT EVERYTHING?

IF YOU DON'T TRY GOD OVER

THAT ADDICTION.

HE IS A TERRIFIC GUY.

I WAS A FAN OF HIS YEARS

AGO, AND SPENT A COUPLE OF

DAYS AGO WITH HIM DOING THIS

STORY.

HE IS A CHANGED MAN.

HE LOVES THE LORD DEEPLY.

HIS EVILLUTIO EVOLUTION AS

A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST IS

INTERESTING.

I DON'T THINK IT IS UNUSUAL

THE RELATIONSHIP HE HAD WITH

JESUS CHRIST EARLY ON, I

SIN, I ASK FOR FORGIVENESS,

AND I MOVE ON.

THEN HE SAID, I NEED SOME

HELP, LORD.

I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU ME.

AND LO AND BEHOLD, HE SAID,

I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS

ASKING FOR.

Terry: WE HAVE INVITED

CHRIST INTO OUR LIVES, BUT

WE HAVEN'T GIVEN HIM

LORDSHIP.

IT IS ENOUGH JESUS TO SAVE

US FROM HELL, BUT NOT ENOUGH

TO GIVE US VICTORY DAY TO

DAY.

AND SOMETIMES GOD LET'S US

GET TO THAT HARD PLACE WHERE

WE COME TO THE END OF

OURSELVES, AND SOMETIMES WE

HAVE TO TO SAY, ENOUGH OF

ME.

I NEED YOU.

I LOVE THE FACT THAT FOR ALL

OF THE GLORY AND ALL OF THE

FAME AND ALL OF THE

ATTENTION THAT HE GOT WHEN

HE WAS PLAYING, THE

SATISFACTION AND THE JOY IS

NOW.

IT'S IN THE NOW.

IT'S AN AMAZING STORY.

QUITE A GUY.

AND IT CAME TO THE POINT

WHERE HE SAID, I HAVE

TRUSTED YOU, LORD, WITH MY

ETERNAL LIFE, AND NOW LET ME

TRUST YOU WITH MY DAILY

LIFE.

THAT'S WHERE WE ALL NEED TO

GET TO.

HE HAS WRITTEN A TERRIFIC

BOOK CALLED "HEADED HOME,"

AND YOU SHOULD ALL GET IT.

Terry: THE PITCHER

WHO'S CURVEBALL HAS BEEN

DUBBED PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER

ONE.

WE'LL STEP INTO THE BATTER'S

BOX WITH DOUGLAS CLAYSHAW.

THAT'S NEXT.

Terry: THE BASEBALL

SEASON IS YOUNG, AND CLAYTON

KERSHAW HAS SEEN THE GOOD

AND THE BAD.

HE PITCHED WELL AND THEN

WENT STRAIGHT TO THE

DISABLED LIST.

WE SPOKE TO HIM ABOUT LIFE

ON THE HILL AND PUBLIC ENEMY

NUMBER ONE.

I LOVE BASEBALL.

I HAVE A HUGE PASSION TO

PLAY THE GAME.

WAS GIVEN THE GIFT TO THROW

A BASEBALL.

I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO

DESERVE THAT.

I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO EARN

THAT.

I THINK I'M IN THE PLACE

WHERE I SHOULD BE RIGHT

NOW.

Reporter: RIGHT NOW

CLAYTON'S PLACE IS AMONG THE

GAME'S ELITE.

HE IS CONTENDER FOR THIS

YEAR'S CY YOUNG AWARD.

AFTER EARNING IT IN 2011,

LEADING THE NATIONAL LEAGUE

IN WINS, STRIKEOUTS, AND

FEWEST RUNS ALLOWED.

HE IS THE SECOND YOUNGEST

PLAYER IN HISTORY TO ACHIEVE

ALL THREE IN THE SAME

SEASON.

FANS AND MEDIA OFTEN

COMPARED THE LEFT-HANDED

FLAME THROWER TO SANDY

KOUFAX.

Reporter: THE BEST

POSSIBLE ADVICE THAT SANDY

KOUFAX HAS GIVEN TO YOU?

COMPETE.

JUST THAT WORD COMPETE.

HE WAS SO GOOD AT IT.

WHEN YOU GET ON THE MOUND,

IT IS ABOUT COMPETING AND

GETTING THAT BATTER OUT.

Reporter: TO COMPETE,

CLAYTON STARTED THROWING

WITH BETTER CONTROL OF HIS

PITCHES.

THE DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENT

EARNED HIM A NEW CONTRACT

EXTENSION.

POISE AND MATURITY HAVE

ACCELERATED HIS DEVELOPMENT,

BUT IT IS THE 25-YEAR-OLD'S

INTEGRITY THAT IS CATCHING

LEAGUE--WIDE ATTENTION.

WHEN YOU JUDGE A PLAYER,

YOU THINK ABOUT HIS

CHARACTER.

WITH THAT YOUNG MAN, HIS

CHARACTER IS GREAT AND HIS

ABILITY IS GREAT.

THAT IS SOMETHING SPECIAL.

IT'S JUST, LORD, BE WITH

ME.

WINNING AND LOSING IS NOT

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.

HE IS NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE

OUTCOME OF THE GAME.

HE IS WORRIED HOW I REFLECT

HIM.

EVERY TIME YOU PITCH AND

EVERY TIME YOU GO ON THAT

MOUND, YOU HAVE TO

UNDERSTAND IT IS FOR HIM.

Reporter: YOU GO PITCH

TO PITCH, BATTER TO BATTER,

INNING TO INNING, WHERE DO

YOU FIND YOUR VALUE AND

WORTH?

BASEBALL IS SO

PERFORMANCE-BASED.

IT'S WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR

ME LATELY.

THAT CAN BE A LOT OF

PRESSURE.

BUT IF YOUR LIFE IS GIVEN TO

GOD AND YOU'RE INTO JESUS,

THERE IS REALLY NO PRESSURE

BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE

DAY, YOUR LIFE IS IN HIS

CONTROL AND YOU SURRENDER TO

THAT.

Reporter: ADJUSTING TO

THE DEMANDS OF PRO BASEBALL

AS AN 18-YEAR-OLD AND THEN

PLAYING TO MAJOR LEAGUE

EXPECTATIONS AT 20, HE FOUND

PRACTICAL HELP WHEN

RELEASING THE DAILY

CHALLENGES OF HIS NEW

CAREER.

YOU WORRIED ABOUT SO MANY

DIFFERENT THINGS AND SAYING,

GOD IS ONLY THERE WHEN I

REALLY NEED HIM.

BUT HE IS IN CONTROL OF

EVERYTHING.

THAT IS A HARD PICTURE FOR

US TO GRASP, BUT HE IS IN

EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIFE.

SOONER OR LATER HE'LL GET IN

THERE.

IT IS JUST A MATTER OF

TIME.

Reporter: IT WAS JUST A

MATTER OF TIME BEFORE

CLAYTON MARRIED HIS JUNIOR

HIGH SWEETHEART, ELLEN.

AND THEIR MARRIAGE HAS FUSED

A MISSION OF COMPASSION THAT

HAS BECOME LIFE-CHANGING.

AMAZING HOW FAR A LITTLE

DIRT CAN GO.

IN CLAYTON'S CASE, IT

COMBINES TO OF HIS WORLDS,

THE ONE QUICKLY EMERGING AS

HIS PLATFORM, AND THE OTHER

AS A REMINDER, A HALF A

WORLD AWAY ON THE BACK DIRT

WORDS IN AFRICA.

WHERE CLAYTON HAS COME

ALONGSIDE ELLEN'S WORK WITH

ORPHANS IN ZAMBIA.

CLAYTON DONATES $500 FOR

EVERY STRIKEOUT HE THROWS

THIS SEASON.

Announcer: THERE IT IS,

STRIKEOUT NUMBER 11.

HE GAVE ME BASEBALL, AND

HE GAVE HER AFRICA.

SO WHEN I GO OVER THERE WITH

HER, I SEE HER IN HER

ELEMENT.

AND IT'S GIVEN ME JUST A

HUGE PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE.

YOU GO OVER THERE AND YOU

SEE THE KIDS, AND YOU SEE

HOW JOYFUL THE PEOPLE ARE

OVER THERE.

TWO DIRTS, ONE PASSION, BUT

IT'S PRETTY SPECIAL.

Reporter: THE DODGERS'

PITCHING ACE CALLS BASEBALL

A STAGE, GIVING HIM ROOM TO

MAKE A MEANINGFUL PITCH.

THERE HAS TO BE MORE THAN

JUST THE 9 TO 5 JOB OR

COMING TO THE BASEBALL FIELD

EVERY DAY.

THERE HAS TO BE A REASON

WE'RE HERE, AND IT'S FOR THE

GLORY OF GOD.

I THINK UNTIL YOU GRASP THAT

AND UNDERSTAND THAT THIS

LIFE IS A GIFT AND THAT THE

ONLY REASON WE'RE HERE IS

BECAUSE HE WANTS US TO BE,

AND TO BE LIVING OUR FAITH

IN HIM.

Terry: I LOVE THIS

GUY.

I LOVE HIS PERSPECTIVE.

HE IS SO ON THE MONEY.

GOD REALLY ISN'T TOO

INTERESTED IN THE OUTCOME OF

THE GAME.

HE IS INTERESTED IN HOW WE

LIVE AND WHAT GOES ON IN OUR

HEART.

AND TODAY IS A GREAT

REMINDER OF THE ATHLETES,

THE PEOPLE INSIDE, THEIR

STRUGGLES, HOW THEY HANDLE

SUCCESS AND FAILURE, AND THE

HARD WORK THEY PUT IN.

AND CLAYTON JUST SIGNED

RECENTLY A SEVEN-YEAR,

$215 MILLION CONTRACT.

SO WE HAVE THAT IN COMMON.

[LAUGHTER]

Terry: GO, CLAYTON.

HE IS A GREAT GUY.

Terry: I THINK HE IS A

GREAT GUY.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT KEEP

HIM BALANCED IS LOOKING AT

THE WORLD AROUND HIM.

SEEING OTHER PEOPLE FOR WHO

THEY ARE, AND NOT GETTING

HUNG UP ON THE NUMBERS

BEHIND THE DOLLAR SIGN OR

EVEN THE FAME ON THE LITTLE

MOUND OF DIRT HE STANDS ON,

BUT REALLY BEING ENGAGED.

AND YOU HEARD TOMMY

LASORDA TALK ABOUT THE

CHARACTER OF CLAYTON.

Terry: IT'S WHAT GOD IS

INTERESTED IN.

WHAT IS GOING ON INSIDE OF

US.

SOME OF YOU MAY BE FACING

SOME CHALLENGES OR MAYBE

YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING GOING

ON IN YOUR WORLD THAT IS

DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH.

WE WANT TO LEAVE YOU WITH

ENCOURAGING WORDS FROM THE

BOOK OF PHILIPPINES: "I CAN

DO ALL THINGS THROUGH

CHRIST, WHO STRENGTHENS

ME."

THAT'S GOD'S PROMISE TO

YOU.

HE WILL NEVER CALL YOU TO

ANYTHING HE DOESN'T EQUIP

YOU FOR.

HE WILL BE WITH YOU THROUGH

THICK AND THIN, WHETHER YOU

SEE HIM THERE OR NOT.

THANKS FOR BEING WITH US.

GOD BLESS YOU.
