On CBN Newswatch, June 3: U.S. will work with Palestinian government; Soldier: Bergdhal 'deserted us' to find the Taliban; Seattle City Council approves $15 minimum wage; and more. Read Transcript

Mark: TONIGHT ON

"NEWSWATCH," PALESTINIAN

UNITY GOVERNMENT, HOW THE

WORLD IS REACTING TO ITS

FORMATION AND WHAT IT COULD

MEAN FOR ISRAEL.

Wendy: PLUS,

INVESTIGATING BOWE BERGDAHL,

WHY SOME SAY THE NEWLY FREED

SOLDIER SHOULD BE PUNISHED

AS A DESERTER.

Mark: AND CBN NEWS

BRINGS YOU THE STORY OF ONE

MAN WHO WENT FROM SCHOOL

JANITOR TO SCHOOL

PRINCIPAL.

ALL OF THIS AND MORE TONIGHT

ON "NEWSWATCH."

GOOD EVENING, I'M MARK

MARTIN.

Wendy: AND I'M WENDY

GRIFFITH.

THE UNITED STATES IS OPENLY

WELCOMING THE NEW UNITY

GOVERNMENT OF PALESTINIAN

AUTHORITY PRESIDENT MAHMOUD

ABBAS, EVEN THOUGH IT

INCLUDES THE HAMAS TERRORIST

ORGANIZATION.

Mark: THE MOVE IS

DRAWING SHARP REACTIONS FROM

THE U.S. CONGRESS AND

ISRAEL.

CHRIS MECCHRIS MITCHELL HAS

THAT STORY FROM JERUSALEM.

Reporter: MAHMOUD ABBAS

SWORE IN HIS UNITY

GOVERNMENT ON MONDAY AND

ENDED SEVEN YEARS OF

DIVISION BETWEEN HAMAS AND

FAT TWO.

INTERRIM PALESTINIAN PRIME

MINISTER ABDULLAH SAYS THE

GOVERNMENT IS COMMITTED TO

INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS

SIGNED BY THE P.L.O.

WE CALL ON THE

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO

IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZE THE

GOVERNMENT, AND CONTINUE TO

SUPPORT THE PALESTINIAN

LEADERSHIP, TO ENABLE THE

GOVERNMENT TO FACE ALL

POLITICAL CHALLENGES,

ESPECIALLY THE POLICIES.

Reporter: ISRAEL

EXPRESSED ITS DISAPPOINTMENT

AND THREATENED SANCTIONS

AGAINST THE PALESTINIAN

AUTHORITY.

OFFICIALS HERE IN JERUSALEM

WARNED THE WORLD COMMUNITY

THERE IS A GREAT DEAL AT

STAKE AT THIS TIME.

BY RECOGNIZING THIS NEW

GOVERNMENT, THEY'RE ALSO

EMBRACING A TERRORIST

GROUP.

HAMAS IS A RUTHLESS

TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,

RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MURDER

OF COUNTLESS INNOCENT

CIVILIANS.

AND AN ORGANIZATION THAT

SAYS MY COUNTRY, ISRAEL,

SHOULD BE DESTROYED.

Reporter: BUT THE STATE

DEPARTMENT SAID IT WOULD

JUDGE THE NEW GOVERNMENT BY

ITS ACTIONS.

BASED ON WHAT WE KNOW

NOW, WE INTEND TO WORK WITH

THIS GOVERNMENT, BUT WE'LL

BE WATCHING CLOSELY TO

ENSURE IT UP HOLDS THE

PRINCIPLES THAT PRESIDENT

ABBAS REITERATED TODAY.

Reporter: DORI GOLD

SAYS THE MOVE IS A MISTAKE.

THE STATE OF ISRAEL IS

DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE

STATEMENTS MADE YESTERDAY BY

THE STATE DEPARTMENT

SPOKESPERSON TO NOT

IMMEDIATELY REJECT HAMAS, TO

NOT CALL ON MAHMOUD ABBAS TO

BREAK AWAY FROM HAMAS IS A

VERY BIG MISTAKE.

Reporter: IT ALSO PUTS

THE U.S. ADMINISTRATION AT

ODDS WITH THE U.S.

CONGRESS.

REPUBLICAN SENATORS MARCO

RUBIO AND MARK KIRK CALLED

ON THE U.S. TO HALT AND

REVIEW U.S. AID TO THE

PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY,

SAYING U.S. LAW IS CLEAR.

UNLESS HAMAS PUBLICLY

ACCEPTS ISRAEL'S RIGHT TO

EXIST AND CEASES IT'S

SUPPORT FOR TERRORISM, U.S.

AID SHOULD BE SUSPENDED TO

ANY PALESTINIAN GOVERNMENT

OVER WHICH HAMAS EXERCISES

INFLUENCE.

THE ADMINISTRATION'S INITIAL

REACTION TO CONTINUE AID IS

OUTRAGEOUS, AND RUNS COUNTER

TO EXISTING LAW.

WE CALL ON THE OBAMA

ADMINISTRATION TO ENFORCE

THE LAW.

U.S. CREDIBILITY, AS WELL AS

ISRAEL'S SECURITY, ARE AT

STAKE.

THEIR CALL NOW DRAWS THE

BATTLE LINE BETWEEN THE U.S.

CONGRESS AND THE

ADMINISTRATION.

CHRIS MITCHELL, CBN NEWS,

JERUSALEM.

Wendy: AND FOR MORE ON

THIS, WE TURN NOW TO

JONATHAN CHANZER, THE MIDDLE

EAST EXPERT AT THE

FOUNDATION FOR DEFENSE OF

DEMOCRACIES.

JONATHAN, HAMAS IS A

TERRORIST GROUP.

HOW CAN THE U.S. SUPPORT

THIS PALESTINIAN MOVE?

WELL, QUITE FRANKLY, THE

PRESIDENT OF THE PALESTINIAN

AUTHORITY, MAHMOUD ABBAS,

HAS FIGURED OUT A WAY TO

THREAD THE NEEDLE.

HE HAS BROUGHT IN PEOPLE WHO

ARE PROXIES OF HAMAS, AND

THEY WILL REPRESENT HAMAS'

ACTIONS, BUT DON'T MEET THE

CRITERIA FOR CUTOFF AND

ASSISTANCE.

I THINK THIS IS A

TECHNICALITY, AND I SUSPECT

MEMBERS OF CONGRESS WILL BE

LOOKING FOR WAYS TO

CHALLENGE THAT.

Wendy: DO YOU THINK

U.S. LAWMAKERS WILL SEE

THROUGH THIS?

ARE THEY GOING TO CHALLENGE

THE ADMINISTRATION OVER

FUNDING FOR THE

PALESTINIANS?

WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN A

NUMBER OF MEMBERS OF

CONGRESS COME OUT AND VERY

BLUNTLY CHALLENGE THE

ADMINISTRATION.

SENATORS RUBIO AND KIRK HAVE

ALREADY DONE SO.

THERE ARE MEMBERS ON THE

HOUSE SIDE, BOTH DEMOCRATS

AND REPUBLICANS, WHO HAVE

ALSO ISSUED SOME STATEMENTS

OF DISAPPOINTMENT ABOUT

THIS.

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO A PIECE

OF LEGISLATION FROM 2006

CALLED THE PALESTINIAN

ANTITERRORISM ACT.

IT INCLUDES IN THERE WAIVERS

THAT THE PRESIDENT CAN

ENACT.

I THINK RIGHT NOW MEMBERS OF

CONGRESS ARE GOING TO BE

LOOKING AT WAYS TO PERHAPS

NULLIFY THOSE WAIVERS OR TO

COME UP WITH NEW LEGISLATION

THAT WOULD SUPERSEDE THAT

LAST PIECE OF LEGISLATION

THAT HAS ALLOWED FOR THIS

LOOPHOLE.

Wendy: JONATHAN, WHAT

KIND OF DANGER DOES THIS

UNITY GOVERNMENT NOW MEAN

FOR ISRAEL?

IT BASICALLY MEANS THAT

THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY

HAS NOW ADOPTED WHAT I WOULD

CALL THE HEZBOLLAH MODEL.

IN LEBANON, YOU HAVE A VERY

WEAK STATE WITH A VERY

DANGEROUS TERRORIST

ORGANIZATION THAT IS ABLE TO

EXIST WITH IMPUNITY WITHIN.

I BELIEVE RIGHT NOW HAMAS IS

GOING TO BASICALLY ADOPT

THAT MODEL.

HAMAS IS GOING TO HAVE THAT

KIND OF IMPUNITY, AND THEY

WILL BE ABLE TO DRAG THE

PALESTINIANS INTO WAR WITH

ISRAEL WITHOUT CONSULTATION,

AND THEY'LL BE BASICALLY

ANSWERING TO IRAN AND NOT

THE PALESTINIAN GOVERNMENT.

Wendy: DO YOU SEE ANY

HOPE FOR A PEACE PROCESS IN

THE MIDDLE EAST?

I DON'T SEE ANY HOPE

RIGHT NOW, AS LONG AS HAMAS

IS INVOLVED, BECAUSE HAMAS

IS, OF COURSE, DEDICATED TO

THE DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL

AND WILL NOT COME TO THE

TABLE.

IF THERE IS A WAY TO DE-FANG

HAMAS IN THE PROCESS,

PERHAPS THERE IS A CHANCE.

BUT I WOULD SAY WE'RE MANY

MONTHS OFF, PERHAPS YEARS.

Wendy: JONATHAN, DO YOU

FORECAST WAR ANY TIME?

THIS SUMMER?

THIS YEAR?

DO YOU SEE WAR HAPPENING

AGAIN WITH ISRAEL?

LOOK, IN THE MIDDLE EAST

WAR IS ALWAYS A

POSSIBILITY.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS THE

NEIGHBORHOOD THAT ISRAEL IS

IN.

I THINK THAT NOW WITH HAMAS

BEING PART OF THIS

GOVERNMENT, I THINK IT IS

PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT MORE

LIKELY.

THAT SAID, WE DO HAVE A

LEADER OF THE PALESTINIAN

AUTHORITY, MAHMOUD ABBAS,

WHO HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO A

NON-VIOLENT APPROACH.

Wendy: ALL RIGHT,

JONATHAN CHANZER, THANKS SO

MUCH FOR YOUR INSIGHTS.

Mary:

Mark: IS VOTERS IN

CERTAIN PARTS OF SYRIA ARE

TAKING TO THE POLLS.

THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT ASSAD

WILL WIN.

THE ELECTION IS TAKING PLACE

DESPITE THE THREE-YEAR CIVIL

WAR STILL WAGING IN THAT

COUNTRY.

THAT WAR HAS KILLED MORE

THAN 150,000 PEOPLE AND

DISPLACED AROUND 6.5 MILLION

SYRIANS.

Wendy: PRESIDENT OBAMA

IS ASSURING EUROPEAN

COUNTRIES THAT AMERICA WILL

STAND BESIDE THEM.

President Obama: TODAY

I'M ANNOUNCING A NEW

INITIATIVE TO BOLSTER THE

SECURITY OF OUR NATO ALLIES

HERE IN EUROPE.

UNDER THIS EFFORT AND WITH

THE SUPPORT OF CONGRESS, THE

UNITED STATES WILL

PREPOSITION MORE EQUIPMENT

IN EUROPE.

WE WILL BE TRAINING WITH

ALLIES TO INCREASE THE

READINESS OF OUR FORCES.

Wendy: THIS NEW

INITIATIVE REVERSES A NEW

DECADE TREND OF A SMALLER

MILITARY PRESENCE IN EUROPE,

AND COULD COST THE U.S. UP

TO $1 BILLION.

IT COMES AS THE PRESIDENT

BEGINS A THREE-COUNTRY TOUR

OF EUROPE.

Mark: MEANWHILE, THE

UKRAINIAN MILITARY IS

STEPPING UP ITS OFFENSIVE

AGAINST PRO-RUSSIAN

SEPARATISTS IN THE EAST.

OFFICIALS ARE WARNING

RESIDENTS IN THE CITY AND

THE SURROUNDING AREAS TO

STAY AT HOME WHILE THEY

FIGHT THE INSURGENTS.

THAT WARNING COMES AS A

CHRISTIAN ORPHANAGE IN THE

AREA WAS ATTACKED BY

PRO-RUSSIAN INSURGENTS.

THE CENTER IS PARTIALLY

SUPPORTED BY CBN'S "ORPHANS' PROMISE."

NO CHILDREN WERE HURT IN

THE ATTACK, BUT O "ORPHANS'

PROMISE" HAS MOVED ALL OF

THE KIDS TO A SAFE PLACE IN

WESTERN UKRAINE.

Wendy: THE U.S.

MILITARY MAY EXPLORE

DESERTION CHARGES AGAINST

SOLDIER BOWE BERGDAHL.

HE WAS THE PRISONER FREED IN

AN EXCHANGE WITH

AFGHANISTAN.

SOME SOLDIERS SAY BERG

BERGDAHL WALKED AWAY FIVE

YEARS AGO.

Reporter: WHILE

BERGDAHL RECOVERS IN EUROPE,

FAMILY AND FRIENDS PRAYED

FOR THEIR RELEASE.

BOWE IS COMING HOME.

YOU WALK AROUND AND HEAR IT

EVERYWHERE.

Reporter: BUT FOR HIS

FELLOW SOLDIERS IN

AFGHANISTAN, A STORY OF

BETRAYAL.

HE WALKED AWAY, RIGHT OFF

THE BASE.

THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS HE

DISNEDESERTED US IN THE

MIDDLE OF AFGHANISTAN TO GO

AND FIND THE TALIBAN.

Reporter: THIS CHAIRMAN

OF THE CHIEFS OF STAFF

POSTED A MESSAGE ON

Facebook, SAYING OUR ARMY

OFFICIALS WILL NOT LOOK

AWAY.

SOME SAY BERGDAHL MAY HAVE

COLLABORATED WITH THE

ENEMY.

HE SPENT FIVE YEARS IN

PAKISTAN, AND IS SCHEDULED

TO COME BACK TO THE U.S.

THIS WEEK.

WE NEEDED TO GET HIM OUT

OF THERE.

ESSENTIALLY TO SAVE HIS

LIFE.

Reporter: BUT AT WHAT

PRICE?

MANY REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS

SAY THE SHELVING OF THE U.S.

POLICY NOT TO DEAL WITH

TERRORISTS SETS A DEADLY

PRECEDENT.

THE IDEA THAT WE'RE NOW

MAKING TRADES, WHAT DOES

THAT DO FOR EVERY SINGLE

SOLDIER STATIONED ABROAD.

IT SAYS THE REASON THE U.S.

HAD THE POLICY FOR DECADES

OF NOT NEGOTIATING WITH

TERRORISTS, BECAUSE ONCE YOU

START DOING THAT, EVERY

OTHER TERROROTHER TERRORIST

HAS AN INCENTIVE TO CAPTURE

A SOLDIER.

President Obama: WE

HAVE CONSULTED WITH CONGRESS

FOR QUITE SOME TIME ABOUT

THE POSSIBILITY THAT WE

MIGHT NEED TO EXECUTE A

PRISONER EXCHANGE IN ORDER

TO RECOVER SERGEANT

BERGDAHL.

Reporter: BERGDAHL'S

HOMECOMING IS ALMOST CERTAIN

TO BE A MIXED BLESSING.

RELIEF THAT A U.S. SOLDIER

IS HOME, COMBINED WITH ANGER

AMONG SOME THAT HIS ACTIONS

MAY HAVE LED TO DANGER AND

EVEN DEATH FOR HIS FELLOW

SOLDIERS.

PEOPLE CALLING HIM A

HERO, AND PEOPLE CALLING HIM

THIS GREAT SOLDIER, IT'S A

SPIT IN THE FACE TO THE

SOLDIERS WHO DIED AS A

DIRECT RESULT OF HIM

LEAVING.

Reporter: JOHN WAGGI,

CBN NEWS.

Mark: THE JUSTICE

DEPARTMENT IS REFOCUSING ITS

FIGHT AGAINST HOME-GROWN

TERRORISM.

ATTORNEY-GENERAL ERIC HOLDER

SAYS THE DEPARTMENT WILL

REVIVE A SPECIAL TASKFORCE,

AIMED AT CURVING WHAT HE

CALLS AN ESCALATING DANGER.

THE PROGRAMME WAS ORIGINALLY

ESTABLISHED AFTER THE

OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING IN

1995.

WITH MORE THAN TWO DOZEN

DOMESTIC INCIDENTS SINCE THE

9/11 ATTACKS, HE SAYS IT IS

TIME TO READDRESS THE

HOMEGROWN THREAT.

IT IS AN ISSUE THE NEW YORK

CITY OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN

DEALING WITH FOR YEARS.

HOME-GROWN IS THE BIGGEST

PROBLEM WE FACE RIGHT NOW.

WHY DOES SOMEBODY WHO GROWS

UP IN QUEENS DECIDE HE WANTS

TO GROW UP AND KILL QUEENS'

RESIDENTS?

Mark: THIS NEW

TASKFORCE WILL BE MADE UP OF

LEADERS FROM THE F.B.I., THE

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT'S

NATIONAL SECURITY DIVISION,

AND U.S. ATTORNEYS.

Wendy: COMING UP,

SEATTLE IS SET TO RAISE ITS

MINIMUM WAGE.

SEE JUST HOW MUCH WORKERS

WILL BE MAKING, NEXT.

Wendy: SEATTLE IS

RAISING ITS MINIMUM WAGE TO

$15.

THAT'S THE HIGHEST IN THE

U.S.

ACTIVISTS IN THE CITY

CELEBRATED WHAT THEY

CONSIDER THE BEGINNING OF A

NATIONAL MOVEMENT TO CLOSE

THE GAP BETWEEN RICH AND

POOR.

THE WAGE INCREASE BEGINS

NEXT APRIL AND WILL BE

PHASED IN OVER SEVERAL

YEARS.

SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS SAY

THEY'LL BE PASSING THE

INCREASED COSTS ON TO THEIR

COSTUMERS BY RAISING PRICES

ON THEIR GOODS.

A GROUP OF RESTAURANT OWNERS

OPPOSED THE IN CREASE,

SAYING IT WOULD DECREASE

THEIR HIRING OPPORTUNITIES

AND CUT HOURS FOR WORKERS.

Mark: DR. BRIAN BOGUS

IS A BUSINESS PROFESSOR AT

REGENT UNIVERSITY, AND HE

JOINS US WITH MORE ON THE

TOPIC.

WELCOME, DOCTOR.

THANK YOU, MARK.

Mark: $15 AN HOUR, HAVE

WE EVER SEEN A WAGE HIKE

LIKE THIS BEFORE?

WHEN ALL IS SAID AND

DONE, IT WILL BE A 40%

INCREASE OVER WASHINGTON

STATE MINIMUM WAGES.

AND WE HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING

LIKE THAT AT THE FEDERAL

LEVEL UNTIL THE 1950s.

Mark: FRANCHISE OWNERS

ARE UPSET ABOUT THE

DECISION.

TALK ABOUT HOW THE INCREASE

WILL HURT THEM?

THEY CAN LET PEOPLE GO,

THEY CAN REDUCE HOURS, OR

THEY CAN REPLACE LABOR WITH

CAPITAL EQUIPMENT.

USING iPADS INSTEAD OF OF

A WAITER, AND GETTING A

SELF-CHECKOUT INSTEAD OF A

CASHIER.

Mark: WOW.

WILL THIS WAGE HIKE REALLY

HELP THE POOR AND CLOSE THE

WEALTH GAP?

NO, IT WON'T HELP BECAUSE

THE COSTS GET PASSED ON.

IT GETS FILTERED OUT INTO

THE REST OF THE ECONOMY.

THE MONEY HAS TO COME FROM

SOMEWHERE.

THE SUPPORTERS LIKE TO THINK

THAT THE MONEY STARTS AT THE

BUSINESS AND GETS PASSED ON

TO THE CONSUMER AND THE

EMPLOYEE.

BUT THEY HAVE TO MAKE CUTS

SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW.

Mark: SO WHY DO

ACTIVISTS PUSH SO HARD FOR

THIS?

ARE THEY JUST DECEIVED?

THE IMPULSE TO HELP THE

POOR IS A NATURAL.

WE, AS BELIEVERS, WANT TO

HELP THE POOR ANY WAY WE

CAN.

BUT WE HAVE TO LOOK AT

RESULTS, NOT INTENTIONS.

THESE INTENTIONS ARE GOOD,

BUT THE RESULTS USUALLY END

UP BEING VERY BAD.

IT SOUNDS GOOD, BUT WE DON'T

FOLLOW THROUGH WITH

RESEARCH.

WE DON'T FOLLOW THROUGH WITH

EVALUATING THE RESULTS.

AND WHEN IT IS ALL SAID AND

DONE, WE HAVE HURT A LOT OF

PEOPLE.

Mark: REALISTICALLY, DO

YOU THINK THIS IS THE

BEGINNING OF A NATIONWIDE

TREND?

THERE IS A LOT OF

POLITICAL MOVEMENT OUT

THERE.

WE SEE FAST FOOD WORKERS

ADVOCATING FOR IT.

IT IS AN ELECTION YEAR, SO

IT IS HARD TO SAY FOR SURE

WHAT HAPPENS.

BUT I THINK WHEN IT IS ALL

SAID AND DONE, THERE IS THE

POLITICAL WILL TO INCREASE

MINIMUM WAGE IS PRETTY

STRONG NOW.

Mark: THIS HAPPENED IN

SEATTLE, AND IS THIS KIND OF

A TOP-DOWN EFFECT, AND IT

TRICKLES DOWN TO THESE

LOCALITIES?

THERE IS SOME OF THAT.

BUT YOU'VE GOT TO LOOK AT

WHO BENEFITS FROM A MINIMUM

WAGE INCREASE?

AND THE LARGEST PEOPLE WHO

BENEFIT ARE UNIONS, BECAUSE

IT CUTS OUT LOW-COST

SUBSTITUTES FOR HIGH-COST

LABOR.

IF YOU'RE MAKING $20 AN

HOUR, YOU LIKE TO SEE THEM

GET OUT OF THE MARKET

BECAUSE THEN YOU HAVE A

JOB.

Mark: THANK YOU FOR

YOUR PERSPECTIVE,

DR. BOGUS.

THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME

BE HERE.

Wendy: UP NEXT, HOW ONE

PRINCIPAL WEP WENT FROM

CLEANING THE HALLS OF THE

HIGH SCHOOL TO CONTROLLING

THEM.

Mark: MANY LOUISIANA

SCHOOLS HAVE BEGUN SUMMER

BREAK.

Wendy: AND WHILE MOST

STUDENTS ARE CELEBRATING

GETTING THROUGH ANOTHER

GRADE, AT ONE SCHOOL THE

FORMER JANITOR, MARK,

COMPLETED THE BIGGEST

MILESTONE, HIS FIRST YEAR AT

PRINCIPAL.

Mark: EPHRAIM GRAHAM

BRINGS US HIS STORY IS

TONIGHT'S FOCUS REPORT.

Reporter: HERE AS

LOUISIANA'S PORT BERRY

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, JOSEPH

SONIA IS THE NEW PRINCIPAL.

BUT HE HAS BEEN WALKING

THESE HALLS FOR A LONG

TIME.

FOR 27 YEARS THIS WAS

MR. SONIA'S OFFICE, IF YOU

COULD CALL IT THAT.

THIS IS THE JANITOR'S

CLOSET.

I WAS USED TO IT.

MY DADDY DID IT ALL HIS

LIFE.

Reporter: THE PROMOTION

FROM CUSTODIAN TO PRINCIPAL

IS THE DREAM JOB MR. SONIA

NEVER FELT HE COULD REALLY

DREAM ABOUT.

THAT'S BECAUSE AFTER HIGH

SCHOOL, A COLLEGE DEGREE

SEEMED OUT OF REACH.

THAT'S WHERE IT ALL

STARTED, RIGHT HERE.

MY MOTHER AND FATHER HAD

SEPARATED, AND SO WE WERE

FIVE SIBLINGS, AND MY MOTHER

WAS A HOUSEKEEPER.

AND SHE COULDN'T AFFORD TO

HAVE ME IN COLLEGE AND HAVE

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN

GRADE SCHOOL.

SO I HAD TO DROP OUT OF

COLLEGE TO GO INTO THE

WORKFORCE.

Reporter: IT JUST SO

HAPPENED THAT THE MAN WHO

TAUGHT JOSEPH IN FOURTH

GRADE WAS PRINCIPAL AT PORT

BERRY.

WESLEY JONES HIRED HIM AS

JANITOR.

I WAS THE ONLY JANITOR

FOR EIGHT YEARS AT THIS

CAMPUS.

Reporter: AND THEN

ENCOURAGED HIM TO DO MORE.

HE SAID, I'D RATHER SEE

YOU GRADING PAPERS THAN

PICKING THEM UP.

AND THAT SEED WAS PLANTED

BECAUSE IT STAYED HERE AND

HERE.

Reporter: THE SEED

STAYED HIDDEN FOR ABOUT 15

YEARS, UNTIL SONIA ENROLLED

IN COLLEGE WITH HIS YOUNGEST

SON.

FOR EIGHT YEARS HE CLEANED

CLASSROOMS FULL-TIME, TOOK

CLASSES PART-TIME, AND

STUDIED WHENEVER HE COULD TO

EARN HIS AGREE.

AT TIMES, I WAS OPERATING

ON THREE, MAYBE FOUR, HOURS

OF SLEEP A NIGHT.

Reporter: YET HE NEVER

ONCE THOUGHT OF QUITTING.

WHEN YOU'RE DETERMINED

AND YOU STEP OUT ON FAITH,

YOU'RE GOING TO GET IT

DONE.

Reporter: MR. SONIA DID

MORE THAN JUST GET THE JOB

DONE.

THIS IS THE VERY FIRST

CLASS I CLEANED.

Reporter: HE TAUGHT

THIRD GRADE FOR THREE YEARS

AND FOURTH GRADE FOR TWO

YEARS WHILE WORKING ON HIS

MASTER'S DEGREE.

THESE WERE HIS STUDENTS

BEFORE HIS RISE TO PRINCIPAL

IN NOVEMBER.

MONTHS LATER, HE IS STILL

PINCHING HIMSELF.

I SAT BACK IN MY DESK IN

DECEMBER, WHEN WE WERE ON

CHRISTMAS BREAK.

AND I HAD THE BLINDS OPEN,

AND I LOOKED THROUGH THE

BLINDS, AND ALL I COULD SAY

WAS THANK YOU, GOD, THANK

YOU, GOD.

I KEPT SAYING IT OVER AND

OVER UNTIL TEARS STARTED

COMING DOWN MY EYES BECAUSE

I WAS GRATEFUL.

I WAS HAPPY.

I DO GET A LITTLE EMOTIONAL

BECAUSE IT MEANS A LOT TO ME

THAT GOD HAD THESE PLANS FOR

ME THAT 33 YEARS AGO I

DIDN'T THINK I WOULD BE

DOING THIS.

Reporter: LOOKING BACK,

SONIA SAYS THE SCHOOL'S

PREVIOUS PRINCIPALS PREPARED

HIM, SHARING UNFORGETTABLE

LESSONS.

IT IS NOT WHERE YOU

START.

IT'S WHERE YOU FINISH.

BUT YOU HAVE TO STEP OUT ON

FAITH.

PEOPLE HAVE DREAMS, BUT THEY

GIVE UP ON THEIR DREAMS

BECAUSE THEY HAVE SO MANY

OBSTACLES.

YOU'RE GOING TO FACE THOSE

OBSTACLES.

BUT NOTHING IN LIFE COMES

EASY -- OR NOTHING GOOD

COMES EASILY, I SHOULD SAY.

I DID A REDEDICATION OF

MY CHURCH.

I OFFICIATED HIGH SCHOOL

BASKETBALL IN COLLEGE, AND

22 YEARS I'VE BEEN DOING

THAT.

Reporter: STILL, IN ALL

OF THAT BUSYNESS, SOME OLD

HABITS ARE HARD TO BREAK.

THIS SCHOOL PRINCIPAL STILL

CLEANS HIS OWN OFFICE.

I SAY, DON'T WORRY ABOUT

THIS.

I CAN TAKE CARE OF THIS

MYSELF.

I'M NOT ABOVE THAT.

Reporter: JOSEPH SONIA

IS A HUMBLE HOMETOWN HERO,

WITH A HEART AS BIG AS HIS

SMILE.

YET HE TAKES NO CREDIT FOR

HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

PEOPLE MAKE UP IN THEIR

MINDS WHAT THEY WANT TO DO.

BUT IT IS GOD WHO DECIDES

WHAT THEY WILL DO.

Reporter: E EPHRAIM

GRAHAM, CBN NEWS, PORT

BERRY, LOUISIANA.

Mark: WHAT A GREAT

STORY.

UP NEXT, LEADING BY

EXAMPLE.

HOW ONE MOM IS TEACHING HER

SON THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING

BACK.

Wendy: WELL, IT'S

GRADUATION SEASON, AND FOR

ONE CALIFORNIA FAMILY, IT

HAS BEEN EXTRA SPECIAL.

Mark: A MOTHER AND SON

BOTH GRADUATED FROM THE

LOS ANGELES SHERIFF'S

ACADEMY ON THE SAME DAY.

JEREMY SUBOLBIDA.

Mark: THE DEPUTY AND

HIS MOM, GINA, BOTH WORKED

AT A JAIL.

AND THEN THEY DECIDED TO

APPLY TO THE ACADEMY.

BOTH WERE ACCEPTED, EVEN PUT

IN THE SAME CLASS.

BUT DEPUTY JEREMY GOT A

LITTLE TEASING.

IT WAS A JOKE THAT SHE IS

THE CLASS MOM.

IT WAS GREAT PRIDE WATCHING

HER BADGE PINNED ON HER.

WHEN THEY CALLED HIS

NAME, I IMMEDIATELY WANTED

TO JUMP UP AND I DID START

CLAPPING, AND I SAID, OH,

WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE

DOING THAT BECAUSE I'M MOM.

Mark: THIS IS THE FIRST

TIME IN THE DEPARTMENT'S

164-YEAR HISTORY THAT A

MOTHER AND SON HAVE

GRADUATED FROM THE ACADEMY

TOGETHER.

WHAT A GREAT STORY.

Wendy: GUESS WHAT, MY

MOM WAS A DEPUTY SHERIFF?

MY PAPA WAS A SHERIFF AND MY

MOM WAS THE DEPUTY.
