Baylor University’s football coach Art Briles talks with CBN Sports about turning to his faith to overcome personal tragedy. Read Transcript

Reporter: HIS BAYLO

BAYLOR BEARS HAVE LED

COLLEGE FOOTBALL THE LAST

THREE SEASONS.

DYNAMIC, AND WITH A HIGH

RATE OF SPEED AND HIGH

INTENSITY AND REALLY HIGH

EFFORT.

WHEN EVERYBODY IS CLICKING,

WE FEEL LIKE WE'VE DONE WHAT

WE NEED TO DO.

Reporter: BRILES IS A

TURN AROUND SPECIALIST,

REVITALIZING THE FOOTBALL

TEAMS WHERE HE HAS COACH.

HIS APPROACH HAS BRANDED HIM

AS A RESPECTED INNOVATOR.

I'VE COACHED HIGH SCHOOL

FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, AND

YOU COACH AS YOU WALK

THROUGH THE DOOR.

WU YOU'VE.

YOU'VE GOT TO MAKE IT WORK

FOR THEM.

WE'LL ADAPT OUR PERSONNEL,

AND CHANGE OUR SCHEMES, TO

MAKE IT MORE BENEFICIAL FOR

THE PLAYERS.

Reporter: AND COACH BR

ILE HAS AN UPBEAT

PERSONALITY.

WHO'S STYLE HAS BECOME AN

ART.

THEY CREATE SOMETHING

THAT HAS NEVER BEEN THERE

BEFORE.

THEY LET YOU SEE IT VISUALLY

AND SEE IT.

THE SAME THING WITH A NEW

FOOTBALL PLAY.

IT HAS NEVER EXISTED

BEFORE.

YOU HAVE CREATED SOMETHING.

Reporter: THE NATIVE

TEXAN PLAYED QUARTERBACK AT

A HIGH SCHOOL, AND RECEIVER

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF

HOUSTON, WHERE HE LATER

COACHED FOR FIRE YEARS.

BRIRE HAS TAKEN OVER A

PROGRAM THAT HAS BEEN

UNRANKED FOR 22 YEARS.

BY 2011, THE BEARS WERE

RANKED 12 NATIONALLY.

WE PLAY FROM THE INSIDE

OUT.

BECAUSE I DON'T THINK YOU

CAN DO ANYTHING WITHOUT

BRINGING YOUR PAST.

IT IS EASY TO BE PHYSICALLY

FIT ON THE OUTSIDE AND

MENTALLY READY, BUT WHEN YOU

START PLAYING WITH YOUR SOUL

AND YOUR HEART, THEN YOU

HAVE A CHANCE TO BE

DIFFERENT.

Reporter: LAST SEASON,

HIS 11 WINS WERE A SCHOOL

BEST, BRINGING A

CHAMPIONSHIP TO WACO.

BRILES IS THE UNDISPUTED

LEADER TO THE PROGRAM'S

QUICK RISE TO NATIONAL

PROMINENCE.

BAYLOR IS ONCE AGAIN LOADED

FOR THE BEARS.

AFTER YEARS OF THE

UNDERACHIEVING UNDERDOG.

I'VE BEEN ON THE FLOOR.

I'VE BEEN WITH MY FACE IN

THE DIRT.

YOU CAN RISE UP AND YOU HAVE

AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO

SOMETHING WITH YOURSELF.

WHEN AN OBSTACLE THAT IS IN

FRONT OF ME THAT MAY SEEM

DAUNTING, I'M NOT

INTIMIDATING BY MY

CIRCUMSTANCES.

Reporter: THE ONGOING

RESURGENCE THAT ART BRINGS

HAS MORE TO DO WITH HIM

BEING A SON THAN A COACH.

IT COMES FROM STRUGGLE.

WHEN THE YOUNG SOPHOMORE

WIDE RECEIVER WAS WAITING TO

BE REUNITED WITH HIS FAMILY

AT THE COTTON BALL IN

DALLAS.

INSTEAD, HE GOT AGONIZING

NEWS.

HIS AUNT AND PARENTS NEVER

MADE IT.

AFTER THE GAME, HE LEARNED

WHY.

IN 1976, I TALKED TO THEM

FROM THE HOTEL ROOM AND

SAID, SEE YOU TOMORROW AT

THE GAME.

THERE IS ALWAYS A PARENTS'

SECTION.

AND I LOOKED UP THERE, AND

DIDN'T SEE THEM, AND

THOUGHT, MAYBE THEY'RE

RUNNING LATE.

AND AFTER THE GAME, THEY

SAID THE COACH WANTED TO SEE

YOU.

WHEN HE DELIVERED THE NEWS

TO ME, THEY HAD DECEASED ON

THE WAY TO THE GAME, IT WAS

COMPLETE DEVASTATION.

A DEVASTATION IN MY LIFE.

Reporter: ALL THREE

WERE KILLED IN A CAR CRASH,

WHILE EN ROUTE TO DALLAS.

HOW LONG DID THAT PAIN RUN?

IT NEVER STOPS.

Reporter: IT WAS ART'S

LAST SEASON AS A PLAYER.

HE TRANSFERRED TO FINISH HIS

UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE

DEGREES BEFORE COACHING HIGH

SCHOOL FOR 21 YEARS.

IT TOOK HIM 30 BEFORE HE

COULD OPEN UP TO TALK ABOUT

HIS FAMILY'S TRAGEDY.

BUT INTERNALLY, HE FOUND A

SHELTER.

I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE AN

OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A

DISPONDENT STATE AND MAKE IT

A HOPEFUL STATE.

MY FAITH IN GOD THAT GOOD

THINGS CAN COME OUT OF BAD

SITUATIONS -- YOU KNOW,

THERE WAS A SACRIFICE THAT

ALLOWED ME TO MOVE ON WITH A

DIFFERENT MINDSET THAN I

WOULD HAVE HAD.

THERE IS A PURPOSE IN LIFE.

AND THAT PURPOSE IS TO LIVE

FOR THE HERE AFTER.

Reporter: BRILE MENTORS

AND SERVES AS A SURROGATE

FATHER TO ATHLETES WHO FACE

STRUGGLES FROM BEING

PARENTLESS.

HIS NEW BOOK WRESTLES WITH

ADVERSITY.

I CAN RELATE.

I'VE BEEN THERE.

IT MAKES ME MORE

APPRECIATIVE OF YOUNG ADULTS

OR PEOPLE WHO MAYBE SUFFER

AND ARE TRYING TO MAKE IT.

TO WHERE, YOU KNOW, HEY, I

CAN HELP YOU.

AND, YOU KNOW, I'M WITH YOU,

AND TO BE A GOOD, HOLY

INFLUENCE.

I'VE BEEN BLESSED TO BE IN

THE PROFESSION I'M IN WHERE

YOU CAN UTILIZE IT.

Reporter: THE SHINING

CHARGE TO HIS BAYLOR PLAYERS

IS NOT JUST SET THE

STANDARD, BUT BE THE

STANDARD.

GET READY TO BE THE BEST

YOU CAN BE THAT DAY.

TO GET ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD

AND TO HAVE A TEAM AND HAVE

A PURPOSE.

AND EVERYBODY WORK FOR THAT

PURPOSE AND GIVE UP THEIR

OWN BENEFITS FOR THE BENEFIT

OF THE TEAM.

THAT'S INSPIRING.

Reporter: ART BRILE,

HEAD COACH, INNOVATOR, AND

LEADER, WHO TURNED IT INTO A

DRAWING WIN, BY TURNING OUT

CHAMPION ATTITUDES.

FIND A REASON TO MAKE IT

POSITIVE.

BECAUSE AS BAD AS THINGS ARE

NOW, LOOK FOR THE

OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE AND

MAKE IT BETTER.

WE CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH

CHRIST, WHO STRENGTHENS ME.

WHEN YOU NEED STRENGTH,

CHRIST IS WHERE YOU LOOK.
