Border War: America's 'Watchmen on the Wall'

While politicians argue about America's broken immigration system, U.S. Border Patrol agents are on the front lines of the battle. They explain why the issue is more complex than building a fence. Read Transcript

THIS IS THE FRONT LINES OF

THE IMMIGRATION BATTLE.

AGENTS FROM ARIZONA SEARCHING

FOR PEOPLE CROSSING THE

BORDER

WHETHER ON THE DESERT, FROM

THE RIVER.

THEY KNOW WE ARE HERE

RIGHT

NOW.

OR ALONG THE HIGHWAY.

THE BORDER PATROL ACTUALLY

PATROLS 106 MILES FROM THE

BORDER.

THEY PATROL HERE FROM THE

IMPERIAL SAND DUNES IN

CALIFORNIA.

IT'S A WILD SCENE INCLUDING A

FLOATING FENCE FOR EIGHT 8

MILES.

THE MACHINE MAKES SURE IT

WON'T LOSE HEIGHT.

TOOLS LIKE THIS WILL HELP

THEM

CATCH THOSE MAKING AN ILLEGAL

RUN ACROSS THE BORDER.

IT GIVES ME A SENSE OF

ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT PEOPLE

TRYING TO CROSS ARE HUMBLE

FAMILIES, BUT OTHERS ARE

PEOPLE THAT HAVE INTENTIONS

ON

DOING THINGS TO OUR COUNTRY

THAT WE DON'T WANT HERE.

THOSE WITH BAD INTENTIONS

CONSISTENTLY COME UP WITH

CREATIVE WAYS FOR BEATING THE

SYSTEM.

THEY ARE LIMITED BY THEIR

OWN IMAGINATION, THEY HAVE

LIMITED FUNDINGS AND CAN

BEHIND THINGS IN ANY PART OF

A

VEHICLE.

THIS INCLUDED COCAINE IN

AN

OIL PAN AND SMUGGLING PEOPLE,

SOME HAVE FOUND UNDERWOOD IN

A

TRUCK OR EVEN HIDING IN A

SUIT

CASE.

THAT'S WHY THESE K9 HEROES

ARE

CRUCIAL.

THEY ARE GOING TO TRY

SOMETHING TODAY, WE ARE GOING

TO TRY TO BEAT THAT.

WHILE WE HAVE HEARD OF THE

MASSIVE PROBLEMS ALONG THE

TEXAS BORDER IS CONSIDERED

ONE

OF THE MOST SECURE IN THE

NATION.

LOOK AT THE NUMBERS, IN 2005,

THEY HAD ALMOST 140,000

APPREHENSIONS.

TODAY, OVER 6,000.

BORDER PATROL SPENDING

SKYROCKETED FROM $4 BILLION

IN

2001 TO $12 BILLION.

THAT TRANSLATED TO TRIPLE THE

NUMBER OF AGENTS AND BETTER

TECHNOLOGY AND A FENCE ALONG

EVERY MILE OF THIS HUMAN

SECTOR.

BACK IN THE DAY THERE WAS

JUST A BASH WIRE FENCE AND

DOWN HERE IS MEXICAN HIGHWAY

2.

THEY WOULD TAKE THEIR

VEHICLES

OFF ROAD AND COME THROUGH THE

DESERT AND GET UP SOME OF

THOSE ROADS WE HAVE AND GO UP

NORTH.

ON THE COLORADO RIVER FROM

MEXICO TO ARIZONA, BETTER

TECHNOLOGY HAS HELPED

IMMENSELY.

WE ALSO HAVE SENSORS THAT

ALLOW US TO DETECT AN ENTRY

AND WE GO TO SEE WHAT'S GOING

ON.

BORDER TOWNS LIKE SAN LUIS

ARIZONA IS JUST A FLASHLIGHT

TO KEEP OUT ILLEGALS.

WE HAVE THE STADIUM

LIGHTS

AND MOBILE LIGHTS BECAUSE

THERE IS AREAS WHERE WE HAVE

TO BE VIGILANT AT ALL TIMES.

AGENTS POINT OUT THAT A

FENCE WON'T STOP PEOPLE FROM

ENTERING AMERICA.

IT JUST MAKES THEIR JOB

EASIER.

THAT FENCE IS THERE FOR

DETERRENCE AND GIVES AGENTS

TIMES TO RESPOND.

THOSE CREATIVE DRUG

SMUGGLERS HAVE TUNNELS.

THIS IS A COMPLETED TUNNEL

AND HAD LIGHTS AND EVENTS FOR

PEOPLE AND WAS GOING TO USED

FOR NARCOTICS AND ILLEGAL

DRUGS AND IT'S OUR JOB TO

STOP

PEOPLE FROM CROSSING THE

BORED

AND ILLEGAL DRUGS AND

TERRORIST.

ISIS TERRORIST ARE LOOKING

TO CROSS THE U.S. BORDER.

WHILE THEY MUST ALSO BE MIND

FULL OF THE OTHER FORCE OF

GETTING INTO AMERICA, THE

FAMILIES CROSSING ILLEGALLY

IN

SEARCH OF A BETTER LIFE.

MANY DON'T MAKE IT, DYING IN

THE DESERT.

AGENTS TRY TO HELP WHEN THEY

CAN.

THERE ARE BECONSIRENS AND

THEY CAN PUSH IF THOSE

ILLEGALS WANT TO GIVE UP A

FIGHT.

I DON'T WANT TO SEE AGENTS

GETTING HURT. I DON'T LIKE TO

SEE MIGRANTS GETTING HURT BY

DYING.

ARIZONA.
