Studio 5: Risen & Recording

Studio 5 goes behind-the-scenes of the film Risen. Its star Joseph Fiennes talks about his role in the film, his family and what’s next in his career. Singer Jonathan McReynolds also sits down to talk about his new project. Read Transcript

Efrem: THIS IS THE

BASILICA OF ST. ST. MARY.

THIS MUSIC YOU HEAR SET

THE STAGE FOR DAY'S STUDIO

5.

HELLO, EVERYONE.

I'M EFREM GRAHAM.

WE'RE TAKING A LOOK AT THE

FILM "RISEN," WHICH

FOLLOWS A ROMAN MILITARY

OFFICER'S WEEK-LONG

JOURNEY TO FIND JESUS'

BODY AFTER THE

RESURRECTION.

BUT BEFORE WE GET TO THAT,

HERE IS A QUICK LOOK AT

OTHER HEADLINES FROM THE

WORLD OF UPLIFTING

ENTERTAINMENT IN THE

STUDIO 5 TOP 5.

NUMBER FIVE, RAPPER KANYE

WEST IS RECORDING A GOSPEL

ALBUM.

HIS NEW PROJECT IS TITLED

"WAVES," AND HE DESCRIBES

IT AS A DREAM THAT CAN'T

HAPPEN WITHOUT GOD.

AND HE IS TEAMING UP WITH

KIRK FRANKLIN.

> NUMBER FOUR, ROMA

DOWNEY AND LIGHT WORKERS

MEDIA HAVE ACQUIRED THE

RIGHTS TO THE BAXTER

FAMILY BOOK SERIES.

THE PLAN IS TO TURN IT

INTO A TELEVISION SHOW.

THIS BEST-SELLING AUTHOR

SAYS HER READERS HAVE BEEN

BEGGING TO SEE THE BACKS

TEBAXTERFAMILY ON TV, AND NOW

THEIR DREAMS ARE COMING

TRUE.

NUMBER THREE, TYLER PERRY

IS ANNOUNCING HIS CAST FOR

"THE PASSION LIVE."

THE ROLE OF MARY, HIS

MOTHER, WILL BE PLAYED BY

TRISHA YEARWOOD.

AND CHRIS DAUTTR DAUTRY WILL BE

IN IT.

ONE OF THE LARGEST

INSPIRATIONAL EVENTS FOR

WOMEN HAS BEEN MADE INTO

FILM, AND IT IS CALLED

"WOMEN OF FAITH."

THE PART DOCUMENTARY, PART

LIFE STAGE EVENT, FEATURES

INTERVIEWS WITH SOME OF

THE MOST BELOVED SPEAKERS

FROM "THE WOMEN OF FAITH"

EVENT.

AT NUMBER ONE, YOU KNOW

HER VOICE FROM DOWNTON

ABBEY.

AND NOW MICHELLE DOCKERY

IS USING HER PIPES TO TELL

THE TRUE, UNTOLD STORY OF

ENGLISH ARTIST, WRITER,

AND MISSIONARY, LILIUS

TROTTER IN THE FILM "MANY

BEAUTIFUL THINGS."

AND THOSE ARE YOUR TOP 5

FROM STUDIO 5, WHICH TODAY

IS THE BASILICA OF

ST. MARY OF THE IM MAC IMMACULATE

CONCEPTION.

I CAN BRAG, I ACTUALLY SAW

THE FILM "RISEN" BEFORE

THE POPE.

IS THIS THE FACE THAT

LAUNCHED A THOUSAND SHIPS?

""SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

SPARKED OSCAR BUZZ FOR

JOSEPH FINESSE.

AND HE NOW TAKES ON THE

ROLE OF A ROMAN TRIBUNE,

IN WHAT YOU COULD CALL THE

GREATEST MURDER MYSTERY

EVER.

WHERE DID YOU TAKE

USHUAIA?

Efrem: THE

RESURRECTION OF JESUS.

THE BIG ATTRACTION WAS

THE CHARACTER, AND WHAT HE

GOES THROUGH.

IN UNDER A WEEK, HE HAS

GONE THROUGH THIS MASSIVE

REFORMATION.

THAT WAS THE BIG

ATTRACTION.

I NEVER REALLY SAW IT AS A

BIBLICAL STORY.

I SAW IT AS A WONDERFUL

JOURNEY OF A MAN WHO HAS

TO QUESTION HIS

CONDITIONING.

I THINK THE BALANCE OF THE

FILM, AND FOR ME THE

SUCCESS OF THE FILM, AND

THE ATTRACTION OF IT, WAS

THAT WE COULD GET

EVERYBODY IN THE ROOM.

IT WOULDN'T HAVE TO BE

JUST THE FAITH-BASED.

Efrem: THIS IS AN

ACTION ADVENTURE, AND

PREPARING TO PLAY CLAVIUS

WAS A DEMANDING PHYSICAL

JOURNEY FOR FINNES.

I WENT TO GLADIATOR

SCHOOL IN ROME.

AND I STAYED LONG ENOUGH

TO NEVER WANT TO GO BACK.

I SPENT A GOOD PART OF A

WEEK WORKING WITH A

BRILLIANT SET OF GUYS.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM A

MILITARY STANDPOINT,

REALLY, TO ME, WAS THE WAY

INTO THE WAY THE MAN WAS

CONDITIONED, AND THE WAY

HE FOUGHT.

AND THAT WAS AT THE

BEGINNING.

Efrem: SO YOU PUT

YOUR BODY THROUGH THE

WRINGER?

I DID.

Efrem: WHAT IS

HURTING?

MUSCLES PULLED AND

THINGS LIKE THAT.

Efrem: THE DIRECTOR,

KEVIN REYNOLDS, SHOT THE

FILM IN SPAIN AND MALTA,

WHERE FINNES HAD NO

CONTACT WITH THE ACTORS

UNTIL THE SCENE CALLED FOR

THEM TO BE TOGETHER.

Efrem: IT SEEMS TO ME

CLAVIUS IS ON A SEARCH

BECAUSE PILOT SENDS HIM ON

A SEARCH.

BUT AT SOME POINT I FEEL

LIKE IT IS LESS ABOUT AN

ASSIGNMENT AND MORE ABOUT

HIM NEEDING ANSWERS FOR

HIMSELF?

THAT'S AN IMPORTANT

QUESTION.

THE IT IS A FATHER-SON

RELATIONSHIP.

AND THE SON, AT A CERTAIN

POINT, DECIDING TO DIVORCE

HIMSELF FROM THAT

RELATIONSHIP.

AND THEN HE EMBRACES

ANOTHER FATHER, IF YOU

LIKE.

SO THERE IS A WONDERFUL

POINT IN THE FILM WHERE I

THINK WE GET -- GIVEN THE

CIRCUMSTANCES AND WHAT HE

IS WITNESSING -- THE MIND

OF CLAVIUS IS THAT I'M

GOING TO WORK IT OUT, AND

WE'RE GOING TO GET TO IT.

AND HE IS VERY DEDICATED

IN SOLVING THIS MYSTERY.

AND AS THE EVENTS UNFOLD,

HE BEGINS TO HAVE TO

QUESTION HIS CONDITIONING.

AND THAT CONDITIONING --

AND PILOT IS A BIG PART OF

THAT CONDITIONING.

HE IS THE FATHER OF THAT

CONDITIONING TO HIM.

AND SO YOU GET THIS

WONDERFUL MOMENT WHERE HE

IS HAVING TO DIVORCE

HIMSELF FROM THAT

RELATIONSHIP.

AND THAT WAS A BRILLIANT

SAYS SPECT OF THE MOVIE.

EfremASPECT OF THIS MOVIE.

Efrem: DID THIS ROLE

HAVE AN IMPACT OF YOUR

RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS

CHRIST?

CERTAINLY WHEN I PICK

UP THE SCRIPT, AND IN

FILMING AND SEEING THE

FILM, WHAT IT DOES IS JUST

REINFORCES FOR ME WHAT A

POTENT, POWERFUL,

PERTINENT, AND IMPORTANT

STORY THIS IS FOR ME

PERSONALLY.

AND AS A CHILD, BEING

INTRODUCED THROUGH SUNDAY

SCHOOL THE STORY OF

CHRIST.

AND IT HAD AN IRREVOCABLE

IMPACT ON ME.

AND NOW I'M LAPSED AND

EVERY SINCE.

NEVERTHELESS, DEEP DOWN I

CARRY A SENSE OF WHAT THAT

MEANS TO ME.

AND CERTAINLY THE FILM,

GOING ON THE JOURNEY WITH

CLAVIUS, KIND OF REMINDS

ME OF GETTING BACK IN

CONTACT WITH THAT CONTENT

AND HOW SPECIAL AND

IMPORTANT IT IS.

SOMETIMES WE HAVE

SIMPLY FLY OVER IT.

Efrem: FROM FLYING TO

THE OLYMPICS, SEE HOW

JONATHAN REYNOLDS IS IN MY

EAR WHEN STUDIO 5 RETURNS.

Efrem: WELCOME BACK

TO STUDIO 5.

AS YOU CAN SEE, I LOVE

MUSIC, AND THE SONG THAT

IS PLAYING IN MY EAR,

WORKING ON THIS SHOW, IS

FROM SINGER JONATHAN

McREYNOLDS.

AND IT IS CALLED "LIMP."

AND WHEN I HEAR IT, I

THINK OF CHRIST BEING

BEATEN, CARRYING THE

CROSS, EVEN LIMPING SOME

OF THE TIMES.

THE SONG IS FROM

JONATHAN'S LATEST C.D.

THE NEW PROJECT IS CALLED

"LIFE MUSIC," STAGE TWO.

Z

*

* I'M TIRED, BROKEN

INNOCENT, STOLEN *

Efrem: HOW DOES THE

PROCESS FOR CREATING THIS

DIFFER FROM THE FIRST TIME

AROUND?

WELL, FIRST OF ALL, THE

FIRST GO-ROUND, I KNOW WE

SPOKE ABOUT IT, I DIDN'T

EXPECT IT TO ACTUALLY

BECOME AN ALBUM.

I WAS JUST DOING MUSIC.

WE KIND OF PUT IT ALL

TOGETHER.

THIS IS FOUR YEARS OF

WRITING, AND THIS IS THE

ENTIRE COLLEGE DEGREE

PROGRAM OF WRITING.

THIS ONE, WE DEFINITELY

KNEW WE WERE WORKING

TOWARDS AN ALBUM.

WE WERE WORKING TOWARDS

MAKING SOMETHING OUT OF

THE INVESTMENT.

THE LABEL WAS DONE.

I TRY MY BEST TO TRY TO

KEEP IT AS INNOCENT AND

KEEP THE PROCESS AS PURE

AND, YOU KNOW, UNAFFECTED

AS POSSIBLE.

SO I STILL TRIED TO WRITE

SONGS ON MY WAY TO SLEEP,

OR IN THE SHOWER, ON THE

TOILET.

[LAUGHTER]

YOU KNOW, I TRIED TO

KEEP IT IN THAT PLACE,

KNOWING THAT, YOU KNOW --

KNOWING MORE THIS TIME THE

END, WHAT THIS WILL ALL

COME TO.

SO IT WAS A LITTLE

DIFFERENT, BUT I TRIED TO

KEEP IT THE SAME.

Efrem: 13 TRACKS ON

THIS.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE?

THEY'RE ALL MY

FAVORITE.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE

KID?

Efrem: NO, I DON'T

HAVE A FAVORITE KID.

IT IS KIND OF LIKE

KIDS, YOU HAVE THE OLDER

ONE, AND YOU HAVE THE

NEWEST ONE.

AND THEY HAVE THEIR

DIFFERENT, UNIQUE REASONS

WHY YOU LIKE THEM.

"LIMP" IS ONE OF MY

FAVORITES.

IT IS AN EXTENDED METAPHOR

ABOUT THE HUMAN FRAILTY

AND CONDITION.

AND HOW WE SHOULD KEEPER KEEP

PURSUING HIM.

* SO PLEASE COME, AND

PLEASE HEAL HOW I THINK

AND HOW I FEEL *

"MAINTAIN" IS A GOOD

SONG, WHERE I AM IN MY

LIFE RIGHT NOW.

I DON'T WANT TO BE A FLASH

IN THE PAN, KIND OF A

QUICK LIGHT.

THERE HE GOES AND HE'S

GONE.

I RATHER BE SOMEBODY WHO

STICKS AROUND.

SO, LORD, HELP ME MAINTAIN

THE JOY, PEACE, IDENTITY,

FAVOR, CREATIVE, SUCCESS.

PRESSURE -- AS I SAID,

THIS ENTIRE ALBUM HAS A

DIFFERENT LEVEL OF

PRESSURE.

GROWING UP HAS A DIFFERENT

PRESSURE.

I LOVE THEM ALL.

* I REALIZE SOMETIMES I'M

NOT THAT SMART *

* BUT I DESPERATELY JUST

WANT TO BE WHERE YOU ARE *

* AND COMPARED TO A WHILE

AGO *

* I'VE GOTTEN FAR

* SO HELP ME MAINTAIN

* HELP ME MAINTAIN

Efrem: JONATHAN IS

ALREADY MORE THAN JUST A

FLASH IN THE PAN.

HIS LIFE AND MUSIC ARE

TOUCHING AND INSPIRING

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ALL

AROUND THE WORLD.

WHAT JONATHAN DOES WITH

HIS GUITAR IS WHAT JESS JESSE

OWENS DID ON THE TRACK AT

ABOUT THE SAME AGE.

THE OLYMPIAN ONCE SAID,

FIND THE GOOD.

IT'S ALL AROUND YOU.

SHOWCASE IT, AND YOU'LL

START BELIEVING IT.

HE IS NOW PART OF THAT

GOOD IN THE FABRIC OF

AMERICAN HISTORY, AND HE

LIFE IS BEING SHOWCASED ON

FILM.

> IT IS A TRIP BACK TO

THE 1930s, WHEN JESSE

OWENS STUNNED THE WORLD

WITH HIS RECORD SPEED IN

HITLER'S GERMANY.

WINNING FOUR GOLD

MEDALS AT THE 1936

OLYMPICS, BUT BEFORE THAT,

THERE WAS A WONDERFUL DAY

AND ANN ARBOR, IN 1935,

WHEN HE TIED THREE WORLD

RECORDS AND BROKE A

FOURTH.

IT WAS A PHENOMENAL DAY IN

TRACK AND FIELD HISTORY.

Efrem: OWENS' THREE

DAUGHTERS WORK TO SHARE

THEIR DAD'S LIFE WITH

YOUNGER GENERATIONS.

THEY HAVE NOW HELPED TO

BRING HIS STORY TO THE BIG

SCREEN.

CANADIAN-BORN ACTOR STEFAN

JAMES PLAYS JESSE OWENS,

THE MAN STILL KNOWN AS THE

BUCKEYE BULLET FROM HIS

EARLIER DAYS AS A TRACK

STAR AT THE OHIO STATE

UNIVERSITY.

WHERE ADMINISTRATORS

UNVEILED A STATUE JUST

OUTSIDE JESSE OWENS'

MEMORIAL STADIUM IN 2011.

HE IS A GUY THAT IS

LARGER THAN LIFE.

HE IS A GUY THAT SO MANY

PEOPLE LOOK UP TO AND SO

MANY PEOPLE HOLD IN SUCH A

HIGH REGARD.

THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF

PRESSURE WHEN YOU'RE

TRYING TO MAKE SURE YOU DO

HIM JUSTICE AND YOU DO HIS

FAMILY JUSTICE.

AND THEN ALL OF THE PEOPLE

WHO CARE SO MUCH ABOUT HIM

AND HIS LEGACY, TO MAKE

SURE THAT I'M DOING THAT

JUSTICE, TOO.

THERE IS A LOT THAT GOES

INTO IT.

IF HIS FACE LOOKS

FAMILIAR, HE PLAYED CIVIL

RIGHTS LEADER JOHN LEWIS

IN THE FILM "SELMA."

?"

TRACK IS A DIFFERENT

BEEFLT.

I GREW UBEAST.

I GREW UP ON BASKETBALL

AND FOOTBALL.

SO WASN'T UNFAMILIAR WITH

RUNNING.

BEING A TRACK ATHLETE IN

1936, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE

BENEFIT OF THE TYPE OF

SHOES WE HAVE AND THE TYPE

OF TRAINING WE HAVE TODAY.

AND THEY WERE RUNNING ON

DIRT BACK THEN, AND NOW

THEY'RE RUNNING ON TURF.

THERE WERE A LOT OF

TIME-PERIOD DIFFERENCES I

HAD TO WORK WITH IT.

AND I HAD TO MAKE SURE I

WAS BEING ACCURATE TO JESS

JESSE AS WELL.

IT IS THE TRUE SPIRIT

OF SPORTSMANSHIP WE'RE

SEEING BETWEEN THESE TWO

ATHLETES TODAY.

THE WHITE FLAG IS UP!

EIGHT POINTS, AND IT SETS

A NEW OLYMPIC RECORD.

Efrem: A HERO IN

HISTORY WITH LIFE LESSONS

FOR TODAY.

I THINK THAT PEOPLE CAN

FEEL INSPIRED BY JESSE'S

WINNINGS IN 1936, AND THE

WAY HE LIVED HIS LIFE IN

GENERAL.

YOU LOOK AT THIS STORY AND

YOU LOOK AT WHAT JESSE WAS

ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH AT A

TIME WHERE IT WAS SORT OF

INCONCEIVABLE FOR HIM TO

DO WHAT HE DID.

AND, YOU KNOW, I DON'T

THINK HE HAD ANY REAL

INTENTION OR PURPOSE FOR

WHY HE WENT OVER TO

BERLIN.

BUT TO GO OVER THERE AND

TO DO WHAT HE DID, AND TO

HAVE THE EFFEC AFFECT ON THE

SPORT AND THE WORLD IS

SOMETHING THAT IS

INCREDIBLE.

IT IS OBVIOUSLY WHY WE'RE

SITTING HERE TODAY.

I HOPE PEOPLE CAN FEEL

INSPIRED BY IT.

IT IS PATIENCE,

DETERMINATION, AND

HUMANITY.

Efrem: STILL AHEAD IN

STUDIO 5, SITTING DOWN

WITH THE STAR OF "RISEN."

I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT

IS.

WE WERE STIMULATED AT A

YOUNG AGE.

WE DIDN'T REALLY HAVE

TELEVISION.

Efrem: FOR A LOOK AT

THE MORE PERSONAL SIDE OF

JOSEPH FINNES.

Efrem: AND WELCOME

BACK.

THE PERFECT PLACE TO SHARE

A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK

AT THE FILM "RISEN."

IT IS A NEW TAKE ON THE

RESURRECTION STORY.

HERE IS PART TWO OF THIS

STUDIO 5 INTERVIEW.

A MORE PERSONAL

CONVERSATION WITH THE

STAR, JOSEPH FINNES.

BEFORE I LET YOU GO, I

HAVE TO KNOW, YOU AND YOUR

FAMILY ALL SEEM VERY

WELL-CONNECTED TO

ENTERTAINMENT.

JOSEPH IS THE SON OF

PHOTOGRAPHER MARK FINNES

AND NOVELEST JENNIFER

LASH.

THIS OLDER BROTHER IS

ACTOR RALPH FINNES.

AND HIS SISTERS ARE BOTH

FILM-MAKERS.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS

ABOUT THE FINNES FAMILY?

I HAVE NO IDEA AS TO

WHY IT CAME TO PASS LIKE

THIS.

WE HAVE ARCHEOLOGISTS.

AND WE HAVE A GAMEKEEPER,

WHICH WOULD EQUATE TO A

RANGER, SO THERE ARE A FEW

OF US OUTSIDE OF THE

CREATIVE FOLD.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS.

WE WERE STIMULATED AT AN

EARLY AGE.

WE DIDN'T REALLY HAVE A

TELEVISION.

WE HAD A BIG LIBRARY AND

LITERATURE AND ART WAS

SOMETHING VERY INTEGRAL TO

THE FAMILY UPBRINGING.

Efrem: DO YOU GUYS

CONSULT EACH OTHER AND

CRITIQUE EACH OTHER?

I WON'T DARE.

I THINK WE'RE ALL -- IT IS

THE NEXT GENERATION.

EVERYONE HAS GOT KIDS AND

THE FOCUS IS REALLY ON THE

WHOLE FAMILY.

Efrem: SO WHAT IS

NEXT?

WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD

TO?

I HAD A WONDERFUL

EXPERIENCE IN CHINA

RECENTLY, WORKING ON A

FILM ABOUT AN INCREDIBLE

SPIRITUAL BEING CALLED

ERIC LITTLE, WHO WAS

FAMOUS FOR REFUSING TO RUN

ON A SUNDAY IN THE

OLYMPICS BECAUSE OF HIS

BELIEFS.

AND IT COST HIM POSSIBLY

THE GOLD IN THE 100

METRES, BUT ON THE

FOLLOWING MONDAY HE RAN

THE 400 AND HE WON THE

GOLD.

SO HE GOT HIS GOLD AND

STUCK TO HIS BELIEFS.

AND THE SECOND PART OF HIS

LIFE, HE WAS A MISSIONARY.

HIS FATHER AND MOTHER WERE

MISSIONARIES IN CHINA.

HE WAS BORN IN CHINA.

AND HE WENT BACK STRAIGHT

AFTER THE OLYMPICS, AND AT

THE HEIGHT OF HIS FAME, HE

WENT TO DEDICATE HIMSELF

TO BEING A MISSIONARY IN

CHINA.

AND HE, SADLY, GOT CAUGHT

UP IN THE JAPANESE

INVASION AND DIED IN A

CONCENTRATION CAMP.

BUT HE HELD TO HIS

BELIEFS.

AND IT WAS AN AMAZING

STORY OF HOW HE HELPED

OTHERS.

THAT WAS A GREAT, GREAT

JOURNEY.

AND A REMARKABLE,

REMARKABLE, DARE I SAY A

SAINT OF A MAN.

AND MORE RECENTLY, I GOT

INVITED TO PLAY MICHAEL

JACKSON.

Efrem: I WAS GOING TO

ASK, IS THAT TRUE?

IT IS TRUE.

IT IS A STORY ABOUT

BRANDO, TAYLOR, AND

JACKSON, AND A ROAD TRIP.

IT IS A NICE, LIGHT

COMEDY.

AND I'M ABOUT TO DO A PLAY

BACK IN BRITAIN ABOUT

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA.

Efrem: STILL TO COME

IN STUDIO 5, FINDING

PURPOSE AFTER A CAREER IS

CUT SHORT.

Efrem: WE ARE HARD AT

WORK GETTING READY FOR THE

NEXT EDITION OF STUDIO 5

WITH TRINITY DAWSON.

HE HAD DREAMS OF BEING IN

THE NFL.

AND EVERYONE THOUGHT HE

WOULD MAKE IT, BUT THE

DRAFT NEVER HAPPENED.

AND WAS WONDERING, WHY

AM I HERE, AND WHY ARE YOU

REQUIRING THIS OF ME?

BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL I

STOPPED ASKING WHY AND

STARTED JUST FOCUSING ON

WHO HE WAS.

Efrem: THE JOYFUL

MUSIC STORY BEHIND THESE

TEARS IS ONE YOU WON'T

WANT TO MISS WHEN STUDIO 5

SETS UP IN TEXAS WITH THE

DAWSON FAMILY.

WE ALL HAVE GOD-GIVEN

GIFTS.

FOR SOME IT IS FOOTBALL,

AND FOR OTHERS IT IS

PRACTICING MEDICINE OR

MAKING MOVIES.

HOW DO WE TAKE THOSE

GIFTS, HONE THEM, AND

BECOME THE BEST.

I'M GIVING TODAY'S FINAL

WORD TO DR. TEDDY BEARE, A

MAN WHO KNOWS A THING OR

TWO ABOUT SUCCESS.

THE POINT IS, IF YOU

WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL,

ONE, YOU HAVE TO LET GO

AND LET GOD.

TWO, YOU HAVE TO GET OUT

OF THE BOAT.

BUT, THREE, YOU HAVE TO

KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS

AND RUN THE RACE.

LEARN TO SEEK WISDOM,

KNOWLEDGE, AND

UNDERSTANDING.

YOU LEARN.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE A

GREAT MUSICIAN, YOU

PRACTICE.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE A

GREAT -- ARTHUR MILLER WAS

A WRITER IN NEW YORK

DURING THE '60s, AND HE

WAS TRYING TO WRITE THE

GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL.

AND HE WAS SITTING IN HIS

EAST VILLAGE APARTMENT,

AND THERE WAS A GUY

PLAYING ALL OF THE SKATES SCALES

IN HIS APARTMENT.

AND HE GOES UP TO HIS DOOR

AND KNOCKS ON HIS DOOR AND

SAYS, WHY DO YOU KEEP

PLAYING THE SCALES?

HE SAID, I'M GOING TO PLAY

TONIGHT.

AND HE WAS GOING TO PLAY

AT CARNEGIE HALL.

AND BEFORE HE WAS GOING TO

PLAY AT CARNEGIE HALL, HE

WAS PRACTICING.

SO LEARN YOUR CRAFT.

LEARN, WHETHER YOU'RE A

DOCTOR OR IN A MEDICAL

PRACTICE -- YOU'VE GOT TO

LEARN AND LET GO AND LET

GOD.

Efrem: AND THAT IS

THE FINAL WORD FOR THIS

EDITION OF STUDIO 5.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR

COMPANY.

UNTIL NEXT TIME, REACH OUT

AND TOUCH ME ON

Facebook, INSTAGRAM, AND

TWITTER.

I WOULD LOVE TO KEEP THE

CONVERSATION GOING.
