NARRATOR: Millions know Emily Maynard Johnson

from "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette".

After two nationally televised attempts at romance,

Emily turned to someone who would never break her heart.

I said yes to proposals on national television.

But I think that the most important yes

I've ever said in my life is a yes

to a relationship with Jesus.

NARRATOR: In her book, "I Said Yes",

Emily shares the story of her life

before and after reality TV, and what she

found that the end of her search for true love.

Please welcome to the show, Emily Maynard Johnson.

It's nice to have you with us.

Thank you for having me.

You were the first single mom on "The Bachelor".

What made you want to do that?

My girlfriend nominated me, and I thought, I'm young, why not?

So you went through the show.

You wound up being Brad's choice.

He proposed to you, you said yes.

Did you feel like this fairy tale was just

going to go on forever?

And when did you realize, whoa, this probably isn't going

to be what I thought it was?

Well I think I did a lot of women do in relationships,

you overlook a lot of red flags.

And I just I wanted it so badly that I just

chose to ignore a lot of stuff.

The fact that we hadn't really known each other for very long

was a big one.

And it definitely showed up after the camera went away.

You didn't know each other in a very realistic way.

I mean it's always very programmed, and planned.

And then, at some point, they contacted you and said,

would you be willing to be the bachelorette on one

of our shows.

What was your thought process on that?

Well the first time they asked I said no way,

and they went with somebody else.

In then the next season came, and they asked me again.

And for some crazy reason I said yes, again.

Did you have apprehension about it as you went into it?

I did.

But I just thought-- I had prayed about it,

and I had peace about it, and for some crazy reason

I thought that that was where I was being led.

I just have to ask you this, because I

have had kids in my house who's enjoyed watching the show.

And the struggle I have with it is, I worked in television.

So I can tell where cameras are.

How real is reality?

Whenever you've been on a show for as long as it films,

having a camera in the room really

just becomes like having a computer, or a microwave,

in the room.

But at the same time, they don't show whenever you're

swimming in the ocean, or the pool,

there's a sound guy holding a microphone in his bathing suit

right next to you.

That kind of ruins the romance a little bit.

So after the season of "The Bachelorette" that you were on,

you wound up choosing Jeff.

What made you choose him, and what made you change your mind?

Well on the show, you know, It's not real life.

You get to go, and do all these crazy things.

And I was a mom, so I never really got

to explore that side of me.

And he was a very free spirit, and fun,

and he kind of brought that out of me.

But as soon as we got back to real life I realized,

I have responsibilities.

I can't be that person.

And that's just not who God made me to be.

And I realized, pretty quickly, that we just

wanted different things.

So once the second time fell through for you,

were you depressed?

Were you frustrated?

What did you feel at that point?

Because obviously you were looking for a relationship,

and wanting to find someone who really

was going to fit with you, with your life,

with your commitments.

What did you feel then?

I remember feeling really embarrassed, and ashamed,

and just feeling beat up.

You kind of were beat up by the response of people,

weren't you, when things didn't work out?

A little bit.

And that's really what led me to open up my Bible.

I would go online and read all these nasty things

people would say.

I would go straight to the comments, which is

the worst thing you could do.

And one day I remember just hearing the Holy Spirit so

loud they say to me, don't go on a computer, open your Bible.

And I had never really done that before.

I considered myself a Christian, but I had never actually

just sat and read my Bible.

So what did God speak to your heart when you did that?

Well I started out just looking up

different passages that talked about things that I

was feeling.

Like judgement, and guilt, and things like that.

And then I started reading books I'm Esther, and Ruth,

and I just truly fell in love.

And it changed my life.

I don't know how much time passed between then

and when you met Tyler, your true man of your dreams

that you're married to now.

But God obviously did some work in your heart along the way.

How did you know though, after two relationships that you

thought were going to work, that didn't.

How did you know that Tyler was the guy?

Well I think that God can see good out of really bad things.

And even though those relationships didn't work,

I still learned a lot.

It taught me what I was looking for, and what I really needed.

And when Tyler came along, he gave me this peace

that I knew could only come from God, and I just knew.

You had mentioned you were a single mom,

you had a daughter through this whole process.

Did she and Tyler hit it off, by the way?

Well I kind of waited to introduce them

until I really knew.

And it happened just so naturally.

She knew him from church.

And so he would bring his dog over for us

to babysit during the day.

And anybody who knows my daughter, or really

any child for that matter, a dog is like an easy in.

Way to go Tyler.

Yeah, it was easy.

So tell us about your life now.

Because you have found through your faith, and your searching,

giving God direction and opportunity

at that place in your life, a man that you're deeply in

love with.

How is your life today?

Everything is just so wonderful.

I look back and I just see God's faithfulness,

and I see all these little gifts he's left me.

And continues to do so.

And I just wake up, and I'm so grateful.

You've written a book that I mentioned earlier,

"I Said Yes".

But did you mean by that title?

Well people have seen me say yes

to quite a few proposals on national television, which

is quite embarrassing.

But the true meaning, for me, is saying yes

to relationship with the Lord.

When people read this book, what

do you want to take away to be with them, Emily?

I think, for me, it's just knowing

that God has a better plan for all of us,

and we just have to trust in him timing.

And for me, that's been really hard.

That was something I really struggled with.

But if you just trust in him, he will never leave you.

I guess that's maybe the big struggle for everybody,

isn't it?

Just believing when we have a dream

in our heart for something we want, that God

has our best interests in mind.

And most of us don't wait very well.

If you could go back and do it over again,

what would you do differently?

A lot.

I never like to say I don't have any regrets, because obviously

I do.

There are a lot of things that I wish I could change.

But at the end, I don't know if I

would change a whole lot because I wouldn't

want it to alter my life now.

Because I'm just so happy.

You did learn from it.

I did, a lot.

Yes, ma'am.

Ricky is 10, now?

Yes, ma'am.

Would you want or allow her to participate in "The Bachelor"

or "The Bachelorette"?

No, absolutely not.

I would beg her, in the same way that my own mom did,

not to do it.

You have Ricky, and then you have a son.

Yes ma'am.

How old is he?

He's seven months.

Seven months.

And now you're expecting again?

Wow, when are you due?

That's exciting.

How wonderful.

You don't know yet if it's a boy or a girl, right?

No, not yet.

It's too early to tell.

Well , congratulations to you on your book, which is,

by the way, just out.

We should mention that.

And on the life that you have found

that you're sharing with your wonderful Tyler,

and your children.

If you want to hear more of Emily's story,

we've just skimmed the surface, pick up a copy of her book,
