A Kansas City pastor renovates an abandoned hospital into temporary housing for the homeless. Read Transcript

Gordon: A HOME FOR

THE HOMELESS.

WE WERE ABLE TO MOVE IN

HERE AND HAVE A ROOF OVER

OUR HEADS.

Gordon: AND A DREAM

MANY YEARS IN THE MAKING.

THERE WERE MANY A NIGHT

WHERE HALF WAY THROUGH

THIS PROJECT, I WOULD WAKE

UP THINKING, WHAT HAVE I

DONE?

Gordon: TOUR THE

RIVER OF REFUGE ON TODAY'S

"700 CLUB INTERACTIVE."

*

Gordon: WELL, WELCOME

TO "700 CLUB INTERACTIVE."

IN KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI,

A FORMER HOSPITAL IS NOW A

HOME TO FAMILIES WHO USED

TO LIVE IN PAY-BY-THE-WEEK

MOTELS.

IT IS AS A RESULT OF A

VISION FROM A PASTOR WHO

WANTED TO SHOW LOVE TO HIS

COMMUNITY IN A VERY

TANGIBLE WAY.

CHARLENE AARON BRINGS US

THIS STORY ON THE RIVER OF

REFUGEE.

Charlene: MARIO GLENN

IS ENJOYING RAISING HIS

SEVEN CHILDREN FROM THE

COMFORT OF HIS NEW

FOUR-BEDROOM APARTMENT.

A BIG CHANGE FROM WHERE

THIS SINGLE DAD AND HIS

KIDS ONCE LIVED AFTER

LOSING THEIR HOME.

WE ENDED UP MOVING IN

WITH A FRIEND IN A

ONE-BEDROOM APARTMENT.

Charlene: MARIO'S

FAMILY IS ONE OF SEVERAL

THAT LIVE HERE AT THE

RIVER OF REFUGEE.

I'M ACTUALLY STANDING IN

ONE OF THE ANTES HERE.

APARTMENTS

HERE.

IT IS ALL PART OF A VISION

TO HELP THE CITY HAVE A

SAFE AND COMFORTABLE PLACE

TO LIVE.

PASTOR JOHN WYLIE IS THE

MOTIVATING FORCE BEHIND

THIS.

HIS DREAM WAS TO TURN THIS

VACANT HOSPITAL INTO

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR

THE HOMELESS.

IT IS A PLACE OF

REFUGEE, WHERE THEY CAN

GET HEALED, WITH DIGNITY,

AND MOVE OUT WITH THEIR

OWN MONEY.

[APPLAUSE]

Charlene: THAT DREAM

RECENTLY BECAME A REALITY,

WHEN THE FIRST FAMILIES

MOVED IN.

WELL, IT FEELS GREAT.

IT IS SURREAL.

SEVEN YEARS OF BELIEVING

THAT THIS WAS POSSIBLE.

WE HAVE HELPED HUNDREDS

AND HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES

OVER SEVEN YEARS, BUT WE

COULDN'T BRING THEM HERE

AND GIVE THEM A

TRANSITIONAL PLACE, BUT

NOW WE CAN.

HERE WE ARE IN A FORMER

150,000 SQUARE FOOT

HOSPITAL, DEDICATED TO

FAMILIES WHO ARE LIVING IN

HOMELESSNESS.

Charlene: WYLIE SAYS

THE JOURNEY HAS BEEN LONG

AND HARD, BUT WORTH IT.

THERE WERE MANY NIGHTS

WHERE HALF WAY THROUGH

THIS PROJECT I'D WAKE IN

THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT,

THINKING, WHAT HAVE I

DONE.

THERE WERE SO MANY

OBSTACLES THAT SEEMED TO

BE IN THE WAY.

BUT OVER SEVEN YEARS, I'VE

WATCHED OBSTACLE AFTER

OBSTACLE BECOME RELIEVED.

SO WHAT IT HAS DONE FOR ME

PERSONALLY, IT HAS CHANGED

MY FAITH.

AND LOVE COMPELLED ME TO

NOT WALK AWAY, TO NOT GIVE

UP.

Charlene: FAMILIES

HERE LIVE RENT-FREE AND

UTILITY-FREE DURING THEIR

ENTIRE STAY, AS A TEAM OF

CASE WORKERS PROVIDE THEM

FINANCIAL COUNSELING.

WHILE LEARNING TO BREAK

THE CYCLE OF HOMELESSNESS,

THEY CAN ALSO SAVE MONEY

AND PAY OFF DEBT.

AN ON-SITE PANTRY ALLOWS

THE FAMILIES TO RESTOCK

THEIR KITCHENS WITH

NON-PERISHABLE FOOD.

RISING UTILITY COSTS HAVE

FORCED MANY OUT OF THEIR

HOMES, CREATING A DEMAND

FOR PROGRAMS LIKE THIS.

IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS,

I HAD 50 PEOPLE CALLING,

ON AVERAGE.

Charlene: MICHELLE

ROBINSON MOVED HERE FROM

FLORIDA WITH HER HUSBAND

AND TWO SMALL CHILDREN.

SOON AFTER ARRIVING, HER

HUSBAND'S JOB FELL

THROUGH.

AND RIVER OF REFUGEE GAVE

THEM A LIFELINE.

WE WERE LIVING IN A

HOTEL BEFORE HERE, AND THE

LENGTH OF TIMES JUST

DRAINED OUR SAVINGS, AND

IT WAS A MATTER OF A WEEK

THAT WE WERE GOING TO BE

IN OUR VAN.

SO IT WAS BY THE GRACE OF

GOD THAT I FOUND THIS

PLACE.

AND WE WERE ABLE TO MOVE

IN HERE AND HAVE A ROOF

OVER OUR HEAD.

Charlene: MARIO

ADMITS HE INITIALLY FELT

SKEPTICAL ABOUT THE

ORGANIZATION.

I DIDN'T EVEN BELIEVE

IT WAS REAL.

WHEN I GOT IN HERE, I WAS

JUST SITTING AROUND

WAITING ON, LIKE, OKAY,

WHAT'S THE CATCH.

THERE IS ALWAYS A CATCH.

BUT THERE WASN'T A CATCH

HERE.

THEY JUST GENERALLY WANT

TO SEE PEOPLE DO BETTER.

Charlene: FOR THAT,

HIS CHILDREN ARE BEYOND

GRATEFUL.

MOST OF ALL, IT IS NO

MORE WEIGHT ON MAY DADDY.

BECAUSE BEFORE HE HAD TO

PAY THE RENT, AND HERE YOU

DON'T HAVE TO PAY RENT,

BUT YOU HAVE TO SAVE UP

MONEY FOR YOUR NEXT HOUSE.

I WANT TO THANK THEM

FOR WHAT THEY'VE HELPED US

WITH.

Charlene: WYLIE MAKES

IT CLEAR, HE DIDN'T DO

THIS ALONE.

SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED,

WHERE I HAD THE IDEA OF

DOING THIS, BUT REALLY

IT'S NOT ABOUT ME.

IT IS ABOUT-UP O ABOUT ALL OF THE

PEOPLE WHO DONATED AND

BELIEVED IN IT.

WE HAD ONE COMPANY DONATE

$1.2 MILLION FOR A NEW

ROOF, ALL OF THE MATERIALS

AND ALL OF THE LABOR.

ANOTHER COMPANY CAME AND

GAVE $300,000.

AND U OF KC GAVE US OVER

200 OAK BUNK BEDS THE

FIRST WEEK WE OPENED THE

HOSPITAL.

Charlene: CBN ALSO

PLAYED A PART.

WHEN GORDON ROBERTSON

HEARD ABOUT THE STORY, HE

INVITED WYLIE ON THE

PROGRAM.

AND HE LEFT WITH THE

LARGEST DONATION RIVER OF

REFUGEE HAD SEEN AT THAT

TIME.

IT GREW AND GREW AND

GREW, AND IT HAS GROWN TO

BE WORTH MILLIONS.

WHEN I THINK ABOUT THE

FAMILIES THAT ARE LIVING

HERE NOW, THE HUNDREDS OF

CHILDREN, AND THE FAMILIES

THAT WILL COME HERE FOR

DECADES TO COME, WILL ALL

BE TOUCHED BECAUSE OF THE

GENEROSITY OF CBN AND

OTHER DONORS.

Charlene: RIVER OF

REFUGEE NEEDS MORE

FINANCIAL HELP BEFORE IT

CAN BRING IN MORE

FAMILIES.

MEANWHILE, WYLIE SHARES

THIS ENCOURAGEMENT FOR

PASTORS ACROSS THE

COUNTRY.

YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF

MONEY OR A BIG BUILDING.

WHAT YOU HAVE IS THE MOST

INCREDIBLE GIFT: LOVE

ATTRACTS A CROWD.

LOVE IS THE MOST POWERFUL

FORCE.

THERE ARE MOTEL FAMILIES

IN EVERY CITY AND EVERY

MUNICIPALITY, AND I

CHALLENGE MY FRIENDS, GO

FIND A MOTEL FAMILY, AND

DON'T TRY TO FIX ALL OF

THEIR PROBLEMS.

JUST BECOME THEIR FRIENDS.

OPEN YOUR LIVING ROOMS.

OPEN YOUR CHECKBOOKS.

Charlene: CHARLENE

AARON, CBN NEWS, KANSAS

CITY, MISSOURI.

Gordon: WELL, SINCE

CHARLENE FILED THAT

REPORT, MICHELLE ROBINSON

AND HER FAMILY HAVE

COMPLETED THE PROGRAM, AND

NOW THEY'RE LIVING IN

THEIR OWN APARTMENT.

JOINING US NOW VIA SKYPE

IS THE MAN YOU JUST SAW IN

THAT STORY, PASTOR JOHN

WYLIE.

JOHN, WELCOME BACK TO "700

CLUB INTERACTIVE."

THANK YOU, GORDON.

THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

THANKS FOR THE INVITATION

TO COME, AND FOR SHARING

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE WITH

ALL OF YOUR VIEWERS.

Gordon: IT IS GOOD TO

SEE YOU AGAIN.

THIS ALL STARTED WITH A

DREAM.

YOU WERE DRIVING BY A

PLACE, AND YOU JUST GOT AN

IDEA.

TELL US ABOUT IT.

WELL, IT ACTUALLY

STARTED THREE YEARS BEFORE

I SAW THE HOSPITAL.

IT STARTED BACK THREE

YEARS PRIOR TO SEEING A

SCHOOL BUS STOP RIGHT IN

THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE I

LIVE.

AND I SAW ELEMENTARY-AGED

KIDS GETTING ON AND OFF

THE SCHOOL BUS AT A MOTEL.

THAT WAS THE DEFINING

MOMENT.

BECAUSE I COULD TELL

FAMILIES WERE LIVING IN

THIS MOTEL, AND I NEEDED

TO KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON.

IT LED TO THE ACQUISITION

OF THE HOSPITAL MANY YEARS

LATER.

Gordon: WELL, WHAT

WAS THE FIRST STEP THEN?

BECAUSE I THINK A LOT OF

PEOPLE ARE WATCHING

SAYING, I COULD NEVER GET

A HOSPITAL.

I COULD NEVER HAVE A HUGE

BUILDING LIKE THAT.

SO GET US BACK TO THE

BEGINNING.

I ALWAYS LIKE HOW GOD

STARTS.

HE STARTS WITH VERY SMALL

SEEDS.

SO WHAT WAS THE FIRST

THING YOU DID?

IF YOU WANT TO GO BACK

TO THE VERY BEGINNING, WAS

MY OWN PERSONAL WALK WITH

THE LORD.

THE MOMENT IN TIME WHERE I

WAS CONFRONTED PERSONALLY

WITH THIS REALIZATION,

THAT HE, JESUS, IS HOLDING

ME PERSONALLY ACCOUNTABLE

FOR THE PEOPLE I SEE.

IN OTHER WORDS, WHEN I

ANSWER FOR THE LOVE AND

THE LIFE THAT HE HAS GIVEN

ME, I'LL ANSWER FOR WHAT I

DID OR DID NOT DO WITH THE

PEOPLE I PERSONALLY SEE.

SO THAT AWARENESS -- WHEN

I SAW THAT SCHOOL BUS, IT

WASN'T, LIKE, GEE -- IT

WASN'T A THING WHERE I WAS

DISCONNECTED FROM MY

HEART.

WHAT LED TO THIS WAS ME

LOVING THE PEOPLE THAT I

SEE.

AND AS I BEGAN TO LOVE

THEM, I LEARNED THEIR

STORY.

AND WE JUST SHOWED UP WITH

SOME FRIENDS AND STARTED

PROVIDING

RESTAURANT-QUALITY MEALS

FOR THEM.

CARING FOR THEM.

HEARING THEIR STORIES FOR

YEARS BEFORE WE BOUGHT THE

HOSPITAL.

SO WE'RE ALL EQUIPPED --

ALL OF US ARE EQUIPPED TO

LOVE OUR NEIGHBOR.

THE LORD WOULD NOT COMMAND

US TO LOVE OUR NEIGHBOR IF

WE COULDN'T DO IT.

Gordon: WHAT DO YOU

SAY TO PEOPLE WHO SORT OF

HAVE THE PROBLEM OF, OKAY,

I SEE THE NEED AND I'M

MOVED WITH COMPASSION, AND

THE THOUGHT, SOMEBODY

OUGHT TO DO SOMETHING

ABOUT THAT?

HOW DO YOU TAKE THAT

THOUGHT INTO, WELL, NOW I

NEED TO ACT?

WELL, FIRST OF ALL,

THAT WHOLE "SOMEBODY OUGHT

TO" -- WHEN I CAN SAY

SOMEBODY OUGHT TO, THAT

USUALLY MEANS I SEE A

NEED, AND I CAN CONNECT A

DOT BETWEEN A RESORGS AND

RESOURCE ANDA NEED, AND "SOMEBODY

OUGHT TO" IS WHEN YOU PUSH

IT AWAY FROM YOU.

SO I STOP AND I SAY, WAIT

A MINUTE; I AM THAT

SOMEBODY.

WHAT I DO PRACTICALLY IS

WHEN I SEE A NEED -- I

CAN'T RUN AFTER EVERY NEED

THAT I SEE.

BUT HERE IS WHAT I DO.

I HAVE THIS HABIT OF

ASKING THE LORD.

LORD, I SEE THIS NEED.

I HOLD IT BEFORE HIM IN

PRAYER.

WHEN I GET THAT STILL,

SMALL VOICE THAT SAYS TO

ME, THIS ONE, YOU OWN IT,

THEN I RUN TOWARDS IT WITH

ALL OF THE RESOURCES THAT

MAY HA HAPPEN TO BE IN MY

POCKET.

IT IS $5.

IF I HAVE $50,000, I GIVE

$50,000.

I CHECK IN WITH JESUS ON

EVERYTHING I SEE.

NOT EVERYTHING THAT I SEE

DO I TOUCH, BUT JUST THE

ONES HE TELLS HE TO MOVE

FORWARD TO.

Gordon: HOMELESSNESS

CAN BE A HIDDEN PROBLEM.

I DON'T THINK OF KANSAS

CITY WITH RAMPANT

HOMELESSNESS.

BUT HOW BIG IS THIS

PROBLEM NATIONWIDE?

WELL, IT IS VERY BIG.

BECAUSE IN EVERY

MUNICIPALITY OF ALL

VARIOUS SIZES ARE THESE

MOTELS BUILT IN THE

'30s, '40s, '50s,

'60s, AND THEY'RE FIT

WITH FAMILIES THAT FIT

THIS DESCRIPTION: THEY GO

TO WORK EVERY DAY, THEIR

CHILDREN ARE ENROLLED IN

YOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS, AND

THEY'RE TRAPPED, AND THEY

CAN'T GET OUT.

THEY WANT OUT, BUT WHEN

THEY TRY TO SAVE THE MONEY

TO GET OUT, A CHILD GETS

SICK OR A CAR BREAKS DOWN.

THERE ARE FAMILIES THAT

FIT THIS DESCRIPTION IN

EVERY CITY.

SO FOLKS CAN SHOW UP AND

LOVE ON THOSE FAMILIES.

THE BEST WAY TO LOVE ON

THEM IS TO GET TO KNOW

THEM AND LISTEN TO THEIR

STORY.

THERE IS A LOT OF

BROKENNESS THAT LED TO

THEM GETTING THERE.

IT IS EASY TO SIT IN

JUDGMENT, GEE, WHY WOULD

THEY LIVE THERE?

THEY OUGHT TO GET OUT.

BUT SHOWING UP AND

LISTENING TO THEIR STORY

AND HAVING COMPASSION

WOULD CAUSE US TO BE MORE

GENEROUS.

Gordon: HOW CAN

PEOPLE HELP YOU?

I WOULD BE MOST

ENCOURAGED TO LOVE THE

PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE,

RIGHT THERE WHERE THEY

LIVE.

BUT IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO

HELP US, WHAT WE'VE TAKEN

ON IS HUGE.

I HAVE FIVE MORE UNITS

THAT ARE FULLY FURNISHED

AND READY TO OPEN, BUT I

NEED A LITTLE MORE

FUNDING.

WE NEED ENOUGH MONEY SO I

CAN HIRE A COUPLE MORE

CASE WORKERS.

THEY CAN GO TO OUR WEBSITE

AT "RIVER OF REFUGEE.COM

."

SO THANK YO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR

YOU HAVE DONE TO HELP US.

Gordon: THANK YOU FOR

BEING JESUS.

WHEN YOU SAW THOSE

ELEMENTARY-SCHOOL KIDS

LINING UP TO GET ON A BUS,

YOU SAID, I'M GOING TO DO

SOMETHING TO HELP THEM,

SOMETHING VERY TANGIBLE TO

HELP THEM.

IT IS WONDERFUL.

YOUR STORY IS ABSOLUTELY

ENCOURAGING TO ME.

I JUST LOVE IT.

THANK YOU, GORDON.

Gordon: UP NEXT, AN

EIGHTH GRADER WHO HAD TO

WALK EIGHT MILES EACH DAY

JUST TO GET WATER.

THIS STORY IS NEXT, SO

DON'T GO AWAY.

Gordon: WATERING A

VEGETABLE GARDEN OUTSIDE

THIS SCHOOL WAS NO EASY

TASK FOR CHULU.

HE HAD TO WALK EIGHT MILES

ROUNDTRIP TO GET WATER.

BUT NOT ANYMORE, THANKS TO

PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

Reporter: EVERY FORTH

BEFORE SCHOOL, CHULU

FAITHFULLY WATERS THE

VEGETABLE GARDEN HIS

EIGHTH GRADE CLASS HAS

PLANTED.

THERE IS ONLY ONE PROBLEM,

HE HAS TO WALK TWO MILES

ROUNDTRIP.

HE MAKES THAT TRIP FOUR

TIMES A DAY, FOR A TOTAL

OF EIGHT MILES.

HE HAS TO COLLECT WATER

BECAUSE THE TANK THAT HELD

WATER FOR THE SCHOOL WAS

DESTROYED DURING A

TYPHOON.

SO CBN CAME AND DUG A DEEP

WELL FOR THE SCHOOL.

NOW CHULU AND THE OTHER

CHILDREN HAVE ALL OF THE

CLEAN WATER THEY NEED TO

DRINK AND TO USE FOR THE

VEGETABLE GARDEN.

AND MORE WATER IS

HELPING THE PLANTS GROW

FASTER.

Reporter: CHULU IS

EXCITED BECAUSE HE KNOWS

WHEN THE VEGETABLES ARE

GROWN, HE AND HIS

CLASSMATES WILL BE ABLE TO

SELL THEM TO BUY BOOKS AND

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR

EVERYONE.

I'M GRATEFUL TO CBN,

WHO GAVE US THIS WELL AT

SCHOOL.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Gordon: AND THANK

YOU.

IF YOU'RE A MEMBER OF "THE

700 CLUB," YOU'RE PART OF

THAT.

RIGHT HERE IN THE UNITED

STATES.

AND YOU'RE A PART OF ALL

OF THAT WHEN YOU JOIN "THE

700 CLUB."

HOW MUCH IS THAT?

JUST $20 A MONTH.

AND THAT BREAKS OUT TO 65

CENTS A DAY.

THAT'S JUST LESS THAN WHAT

IT WOULD COST TO BUY A CUP

OF COFFEE OR A SODA.

JUST IMAGINE WHAT HAPPENS

WHEN THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE

JOIN TOGETHER TO SAY YES,

I WANT TO BE A PART OF A

SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS

OF THE WORLD; I WANT TO

HELP PEOPLE.

IF THAT'S YOU, CALL US

NOW: 1-888-777-1999.

IT'S MY FATHER'S LATEST

TEACHING ABOUT HOW GOD HAS

SEEN HIM THROUGH LOTS OF

DIFFERENT STORMS, AND IT

IS NOT JUST SURVIVING

THEM.

IT'S ACHIEVING VICTORY IN

THEM.

IT IS FROM FAITH TO FAITH,

FROM GLORY TO GLORY.

HIS WALK -- HE IS NOW 86

YEARS OLD, AND IT IS HIS

WISDOM OVER THE YEARS, AND

HOW GOD HAS SEEN HIM

THROUGH ALL OF THE VARIOUS

STRUGGLES AND TRIALS, AND

BROUGHT HIM THROUGH

VICTORIOUS.

I WANT YOU TO HAVE IT.

IT IS YOURS WHEN YOU JOIN.

1-888-777-1999.

> WELL, COMING UP, A

MARINE WALKS STRAIGHT INTO

TROUBLE WHILE SERVING IN

VIETNAM.

I STEPPED ON THAT MINE.

IT WAS A 60-POUND BOX

MINE.

BOTH OF MY LEGS WERE BLOWN

OFF IMMEDIATELY.

Gordon: HEAR WHAT

SAVED THIS LIFE, UP NEXT.

Gordon: WELL, IN THE

MILITARY, WALKING POINT

MEANS TO ASSUME THE MOST

EXPOSED POSITION IN A

COMBAT FORMATION.

YOU ARE LEADING SOLDIERS

TO HOSTILE OR UNSECURED

TERRITORY.

UNSURPRISINGLY, IT IS ONE

OF THE MOST DMPLETION JOBS DANGEROUS JOBS

IN THE MILITARY.

ON MARCH 8, 1971, TIM LEE

WAS WALKING POINT IN

VIETNAM.

AND THOSE STEPS WOULD BE

THE LAST HE WOULD EVER

TAKE.

MARCH 8th, 1971, AND

I TOLD MY MEN THAT DAY

THAT I WOULD WALK POINT.

MY DAD WAS A SOUTHERN

BAPTIST PASTOR FOR ALMOST

60 YEARS.

AS A 10-YEAR-OLD BOY, I

HEARD MY DAD PREACH SUNDAY

MORNING.

THAT MORNING, I WAS SO

MUCH UNDER THE CONVICTION

THAT WHEN THE INVITATION

STARTED, I LEFT MY SEAT.

AND MY MOTHER CAME AND

KNELT BESIDE ME.

THAT MORNING I SAID YES TO

JESUS CHRIST.

AND CHRIST CAME INTO MY

LIFE.

I BECAME VERY INVOLVED IN

ATHLETES.

I PLAYED EVERY SPORT THERE

WAS TO PLAY AT OUR SCHOOL,

BASEBALL, BASKETBALL,

FOOTBALL, I RAN TRACK AND

FIELD.

I BECAME SO ENGROSSED IN

THOSE THINGS IN MY LIFE,

AND GOD GOT PUSHED TO THE

BACK BURNER.

I GRADUATED FROM HIGH

SCHOOL, AND DIDN'T KNOW

WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO.

I ENDED UP GOING TO JUNIOR

COLLEGE IN MT. VERNON,

ILLINOIS.

I WAS WORKING AT NIGHT,

AND GOING TO SCHOOL IN THE

DAYTIME.

BUT IT WAS JUST A TOTAL

PARTY TIME.

IT WASN'T EVEN ON

WEEKENDS.

IT WAS EVERY NIGHT.

DRINKING AND A LOT OF

THINGS IN MY LIFE THAT

ALIENATED EVERYTHING OF

WHAT I HAD BEEN TAUGHT.

I ENDED UP GETTING FIRED

FROM MY JOB, AND I ENDED

UP GETTING KICKED OUT OF

SCHOOL.

ONE DAY I WAS GOING BY THE

POST OFFICE IN MY HOME

TOWN, JUST WALKING, AND I

SEE THE SIGN.

I CAN SEE THAT SIGN RIGHT

NOW.

THERE WAS A YOUNG MAN IN A

SHARP-LOOKING UNIFORM, AND

IT SAYS, "THE MARINES ARE

LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD

MEN."

I ENDED UP GRADUATING FROM

BOOTCAMP WITH A

MERITORIOUS PROMOTION,

FROM PRIVATE TO PRIVATE,

FIRST CLASS.

THERE WAS NOTHING STOPPING

ME NOW.

I WAS ON MY WAY.

I WAS GOING TO MAKE A

CAREER OUT OF THE UNITED

STATES MARINE CORPS.

AND THEN THEY SENT ME TO

VIETNAM.

BEFORE I WENT, I HAD THREE

WEEKS LEAVE.

I WENT HOME TO SOUTHERN

ILLINOIS THO BE WIT TO BE WITH MY MOM

AND DAD.

THAT MORNING IN CHURCH, I

THOUGHT THAT I MADE THINGS

RIGHT WITH GOD.

I REALLY THOUGHT THAT

EVERYTHING WAS SETTLED.

BUT THEN WHEN I GOT AND

THE AIRPLANE, THOSE WHEELS

WEREN'T EVEN OFF THE

GROUND AND I TOLD THE LORD

I COULDN'T DO IT.

THERE WAS A MARINE WHO HAD

A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON ME AT

THAT TIME, BY THE NAME OF

LEE GORE, AND WE WERE THE

BEST OF FRIENDS.

HERE IS THE DIFFERENCE: HE

WAS LIVING FOR GOD EVERY

DAY.

I WOULD SEE HIM DOWN THERE

AND READ THE BIBLE.

I WOULD SEE HIM OPENLY

WITNESS, TALK TO OTHER

MARINES ABOUT THE LORD.

I KNEW THAT'S WHAT GOD

WANTED IN MY LIFE, BUT I

WOULDN'T DO IT.

MARCH 8th, 1971, AND I

WAS LEADING MY MEN ON A

MINE SWEEP.

I HAD ONLY 30 DAYS LEFT IN

VIETNAM.

OUR JOB WAS TO LOCATE

LANDMINES AND ROUNDS THAT

HAVE NOT YET BEEN

DETONATED, AND CLEAR THE

AREA OF THOSE DEVICES.

MY FRIEND, LEE GORE, CAME

UP AND ASKED ME IF I

WANTED HIM TO TAKE OVER

WALK POINT.

AND FOR SOME REASON, I

SAID NO, I WOULD TAKE

TODAY, AND TOMORROW HE

COULD DO IT.

WE PICKED UP WHERE WE LEFT

OFF, AND 45 MINUTES LATER,

THAT'S WHEN I STEPPED ON

THAT MINE.

IT WAS A 60-POUND BOX

MINE.

IT WAS BIG ENOUGH TO

DESTROY A JEEP.

BOTH OF MY LEGS ARE BLOWN

OFF IMMEDIATELY.

THERE WAS A LOT OF

CONFUSION, A LOT OF

COMMOTION GOING ON.

I'M IN EXTREME PAIN.

I'M HURTING.

I COME TO -- I WAS ONLY

OUT FOR JUST A FEW

MOMENTS.

WHEN I CAME TO, MY HEAD

WAS IN THE LAP OF COLONEL

IGOR, AND TEARS WERE

FLOWING DOWN HIS FACE.

I WANTED TO LIVE.

I DIDN'T WANT TO DIE.

I PROMISED GOD THESE

WORDS, GOD, IF YOU'LL LET

ME LIVE, I'LL DO WHAT YOU

WANT ME TO DO.

THEY CAME WITH THE

HOSPITAL SHIP, AND THE

SECOND DAY I'M ON THAT

SHIP, AND DOCTORS GIVE UP

HOPE.

THEY SEND ME BACK TO

AMERICA, TO THE

PHILADELPHIA HOSPITAL.

NAVAL

HOSPITAL.

I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL

EIGHT LONG MONTHS.

SURGERY AFTER SURGERY

AFTER SURGERY.

AND FINALLY THEY'RE GOING

TO DO WHAT THEY CALL A HIP

DISSERTATION.

I THOUGHT, I'M AN ATHLETE.

I CAN GET AROUND IN A

WHEELCHAIR.

BUT IF I HAVE TO LAY ON MY

BACK FOR THE REST OF MY

LIFE, WHAT KIND OF LIFE IS

THAT GOING TO BE?

I CALLED MY MOM AND DAD,

AND I'M A 21-YEAR-OLD

MARINE JUST CRYING.

I REMEMBER TELLING MY DAD

THAT I BELIEVE I WOULD

RATHER DIE THAN LAY ON MY

STOMACH AND MY BACK FOR

THE REST OF MY LIFE.

AND I REMEMBER MY DAD

TELLING ME -- HE WASN'T

TRYING TO BE OVER

SPIRITUAL ABOUT IT, BUT HE

TOLD ME, TIM, WE'RE GOING

TO HAVE TO TRUST GOD.

I REALLY DIDN'T HAVE

FAITH, BUT MY PARENTS HAD

THE FAITH, AND I HAD

CHURCHES EVERYWHERE

PRAYING FOR ME.

I WAS LIVING ON THEIR

FAITH.

AND MY DAD CALLED AND

CANCELLED THAT SURGERY.

I GO MONDAY TO MEET WITH

ALL OF THESE DOCTORS, AND

THERE IS A NEW DOCTOR

SITTING BETWEEN THE TWO

YOUNG DOCTORS.

AND HE LOOKS AT ME, AND HE

SAYS, DO YOU KNOW WHO I

AM?

MY NAME IS DR. ROBERT

BAILEY.

HE WAS THE FIRST DOCTOR TO

PERFORM SURGERY ON ME WHEN

THEY BROUGHT ME OFF THE

BATTLE FIELD, AND TOOK ME

TO THE U.S.S. SANCTUARY.

AND THEN HE PUT ME ON A

BRAND NEW ANTIBIOTIC, AND

WITHIN TWO WEEKS I WAS

BEING DISCHARGED.

I WENT HOME FROM THE

HOSPITAL, AND I WENT TO MY

DAD'S CHURCH, AND I WENT

FORWARD IN THE SERVICES

AND I PUBLICLY ASKED THE

CHURCH FOR FORGIVENESS.

AND I WAS SO FAR AWAY FROM

GOD, AND MY LIFE WAS

MESSED UP.

GOD LOVED ME SO MUCH THAT

HE STOPPED ME.

YOU GOT TO HAVE REASON;

YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE

PURPOSE.

I'VE BEEN BLESSED BEYOND

MEASURE.

I'VE LED A FULLER LIFE IN

A WHEELCHAIR THAN MOST

PEOPLE EVER LIVE WITH TWO

GOOD LEGS.

I LOVE LIFE.

GOD HAS GIVEN ME A

WONDERFUL WIFE, THREE

FANTASTIC CHILDREN, AND

SIX WONDERFUL

GRANDCHILDREN.

GOD CALLED ME TO AND AN

EVANGELIST.

I NEVER WOULD HAVE DREAMED

I COULD SPEAK TO SOME OF

THE LARGEST CHURCHES IN

AMERICA.

I GO 50 WEEKS A YEAR DOING

THIS, AND I LOVE IT.

THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO.

GOD IS A GOD OF A SECOND

CHANCE, AND SOMETIMES A

THIRD, AND SOMETIMES EVEN

MORE THAN THAT.

AND HE'S FULL OF GRACE AND

MERCY.

I'M A LIVING TESTIMONY

THAT GOD GIVES YOU ANOTHER

OPPORTUNITY.

GOD GIVES YOU A CHANCE.

AND HE LET ME LIVE.

AND I SHOULD HAVE DIED.

BUT GOD LET ME LIVE.

Gordon: MAYBE THAT IS

YOUR STORY, AND YOU'RE

LOOKING FOR THAT SECOND

CHANCE.

MAYBE YOU'RE LOOKING FOR

THE THIRD OR THE FOURTH OR

THE FIFTH CHANCE.

REALIZE GOD HAS A LOT OF

CHANCES FOR YOU.

HE'S GOT SEVEN TIMES 70.

AND HE WANTS TO RESTORE

YOU.

HE WANTS TO SAVE YOU.

THAT'S WHY JESUS CAME FOR

YOU.

IF YOU WANT THIS, BOW YOUR

HEAD WITH ME.

LET'S PRAY TOGETHER AND

LET GOD BACK INTO YOUR

LIFE.

LET PRAY.

LORD, I COME TO YOU, AND I

ASK THAT YOU FORGIVE ME.

I ASK THAT YOU RESTORE TO

ME THE JOY OF MY

SALVATION.

HEAR MY PRAYER.

BRING ME BACK HOME TO YOU.

FOR I ASK IT IN JESUS'

NAME.

AMEN.

IF YOU PRAYED WITH ME,

I'VE GOT SOMETHING FOR

YOU.

IT'S CALLED "A NEW DAY."

AND, YES, YOU JUST GOT A

NEW DAY.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PICK

UP THE PHONE AND CALL US,

AND YOU'LL GET IT.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY FREE.

NO FINANCIAL OBLIGATION AT

ALL.
